TYLER — The BBB has announced a call for nominations for the 2021 BBB Awards for Excellence. According to the organization, these awards commemorate businesses and charities that demonstrate superior ethics, reliability and trustworthiness. All BBB Accredited Businesses and Accredited Charities who have a physical location within the nineteen (19) counties served by BBB Central East Texas are eligible to be nominated and to receive a prestigious BBB Award. Nominations for businesses are due January 31, 2021.
Zonta Club cancels this years prom dress give-a-ways
LONGVIEW — The annual prom dress boutique give-a-way by Zonta Club of Longview has been canceled for 2021. Organizer’s said the decision to stop their 13th annual gift of free prom dresses, is for this year only and is due to COVID-19 and the lack of being able to give the items away safely. Zonta Club will continue to collect dresses from size 0 to 28. The dresses can either be brand new or gently used and can be any style, length and color. The Zonta Club also collects accessories and shoes. The collection site is at the Longview Fire Department at 100 S. Center Street.
Funeral service scheduled for local pastor killed in Smith County church
WINONA — Funeral services for Pastor Mark McWilliams, a local pastor killed last weekend, will be held Monday. According to our news partner KETK, McWilliams will be eulogized at 2 p.m. at Starrville Methodist Church, located on FM 757 at FM 16 in Winona. McWilliams was preparing at the church for services last Sunday, when he confronted Myretz Woolen, who allegedly shot and killed the Pastor in the church bathroom. Woolen was suspected of breaking into the church after he escaped and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase. Another parishioner was shot multiple times, in Woolen’s attempt to escape and transported to an area hospital, but is expected to recover.

SUV crashes into Hollytree
TYLER — A vehicle has crashed head on into a brick wall surrounding the Hollytree West neighborhood. According to our news partner KETK, Tyler Police and Fire were called to the scene, involving a black SUV, and a white Lexus that was involved in the wreck. UT Health EMS was part of the first responders that worked the crash site at Hollywest Dr. and Old Jacksonville HWY just after 7 p.m. on Friday night.
ETOM opens exhibit by Miguel Covarrubias
KILGORE — The East Texas Oil Museum at Kilgore College opened a new exhibit Saturday featuring Miguel Covarrubias. Organizers describe Covarrubias as one of the most famous Mexican artists of the 20th century. The traveling exhibit, “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricaturist,†is on display at the museum through Feb. 20. It focuses on the sophisticated caricatures that made Covarrubias famous.The museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is limited to 75 guests at a time due to COVID-19 protocols. KILGORE — The East Texas Council of Governments announced this week, they have been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. LONGVIEW — The Longview Police Department announced the retirement of 3 long term team members. Sergeant Chad Lemaire retired Friday, after 20 years of service. Sergeant Shaun Pendleton recently stepped away after serving the citizens of Longview for the past 35 years. Tyler Parks & Rec announces updated Scavenger Hunt
TYLER — A new QR code based Scavenger Hunt Program is coming to the city of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department. According to the department the plan will launch in February of 2020, with a goal to increase exploration within the City’s parks and trails. The Scavenger Hunt has now been expanded and updated with 12 new clues hidden across Tyler area parks for people to find and complete. Four-way stop being installed at Cambridge/Jeff Davis intersection
TYLER — To increase safety during the upcoming Cambridge Road improvement project, a four-way stop sign is being installed at the intersection of Cambridge Road and Jeff Davis Drive in Tyler, according to a news release. The signs will be installed on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Drivers are urged to use caution when driving through the intersection. Warning signs will be placed in advance of all approaches to the intersection to advise drivers of the change. The four-way stop will be permanent after the completion of the project. TYLER — UT Health East Texas has filled all available appointments for COVID-19 vaccines designated for high-risk members of the public. “We had an overwhelming response to the availability of the vaccine, which allowed us to fill all slots,†said Dr. Tom Cummins, chief medical officer for UT Health East Texas in a news release. “We hope the state will see the great interest by the community and allocate us additional vaccine soon.†UT Health is the only healthcare system in East Texas to be selected by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a mass vaccine location. TxDOT prepares roads for winter weather
TYLER — TxDOT crews have been getting ahead of the winter storm forecast for East Texas by preparing roadways around the eight-county district for snow and icy conditions. The pre-treatment of bridges and other roadway areas susceptible to wind and ice was due to wrap up Friday, according to a news release. I-20 and other major roadways were being pre-treated with a brine solution consisting of salt and water designed to prevent ice and snow from sticking to surfaces. The process is a fast-moving mobile operation with minimal impacts to traffic, according to officials. Waiting list for future drive-thru vaccine clinics
TYLER — All available appointments for the drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination clinics scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Harvey Hall have been filled. Individuals with an appointment will be able to receive their first dose of the Moderna vaccine. Anyone who does not have an appointment for Friday or Saturday is told not to go to Harvey Hall this weekend and is asked instead to enroll in the waiting list to be contacted when the next drive-thru vaccine clinics become scheduled by the NET Health Immunizations Department. Tyler police search for missing man
TYLER — Tyler Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing person. Corbin Stiefer, a 21 year old white male. was last seen Wednesday morning on Briar Creek Drive in Tyler. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans. Corbin is 5’9, 108 lbs with short brown hair and a patchy beard. He’s driving a red 2014 Mazda 6 with Texas LP# GXB1645. Perryman expects recovery in the making
TYLER — Expect recovery to begin, although it could be slow. On Thursday, Ray Perryman told KTBB, “2021 is going to be a transition year. Hopefully by the middle of the year we have the virus somewhat under-control. Once we have that, if we keep the structure of the economy, we can grow fairly quickly from that.” Perryman addressed the Tyler area economy at this year’s 37th annual economic presentation virtually due to the pandemic. Perryman continued,”We’ve already seen quite a bit of comeback. The Tyler area in particular has seen quite a bit from the depths we had back in April.There is still a ways to go.”
CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Breaks Ground on New Cardiovascular Center in Longview
LONGVIEW — CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System broke ground Thursday, on Longview’s first Cardiovascular Center of Excellence. According to Administrators, once completed, the facility will offer a state-of-the-art, 21,500-square-foot, $8.5 million space on the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center – Longview campus. The space will showcase clinical offices and comprehensive cardiac health services, providing capacity for 12 existing specialists and their teams, with opportunity for future expansion. The Center will also provide expanded comprehensive cardiac care at every level, including diagnosis, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation and education.
Tyler police investigate shooting
TYLER — Tyler police are investigating after an 18-year-old man showed up to Complete Care on Capital Dr with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police said Thursday afternoon, that the shooting did not take place at Rose Rudman Park, but actually occurred behind businesses in the 1200 block of SSW Loop 323. Police went on to say, the victim and witnesses have been uncooperative in the case. The victim, identified as James Sutherland, was transported to UT Health on Beckham for further care. Officials said the last known status of the victim was that he was in surgery but would recover.

Gallery Main St to open new exhibit
TYLER — Gallery Main Street will open a new exhibit Saturday. The group says, the display will feature the works of local East Texas artists, in “Alley to Gallery.” This exhibit features gallery-style works from artists who have contributed to Downtown Tyler’s Art Alley mural project. Organizer’s are inviting attendees to visit in person at Gallery Main Street in the Plaza Tower Atrium on N. College Ave. or online at DowntownTyler.org. All art is available for purchase. The Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is free to the public. The showcase will run January 9 through March 1.
Police looking for help in identifying suspect
TYLER — Tyler police say a suspect entered a CEFCO on W. Houston St. at 4:30 a.m. Monday morning. Reports state, the man ordered the clerk behind the counter before stealing her purse and car keys. The offender then ran out of the store with the clerk following. A fight over the purse and keys ensued, but the suspect gained access to the clerk’s red 2007 Pontiac G6 with Texas LP# NJJ0425. The vehicle has been registered as stolen. Gas prices up 5 cents/gallon over last week
TYLER — The average gas price in Texas is $1.99 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel. According to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch, the price is 29 cents less compared to this time a year ago, however, the cost is five cents more since last week. The national average gas price is $2.29 which rose four cents compared to last week. The state average has been below $2 since mid-March, which has been the longest streak since 2005. A considerable fall of gas prices came about after the impact of the coronavirus on daily commutes, and travel. However, oil prices have been climbing over the last few weeks.
Gohmert: ‘they were trying to get onto the House floor’
WASHINGTON D.C. — East Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert was at the Capital in D.C. Wednesday’s and described the violence from inside the House. “People started trying to come in the building, and I just stepped off the House floor, where people were breaking the windows at the door trying to get onto the House floor. It was so staggering to me. And the people that I knew that came up here, were extremely non-violent. UT-Health ER offers online check-in
TYLER — UT Health emergency rooms in Tyler now offer patients the opportunity to start the check-in process online before arriving. The goal is to minimize time spent waiting in the ER. Patients already are able to view wait times for emergency rooms online at uthealtheasttexas.com, and can now use the same site to begin check-in prior to arrival. This service lets you set up an estimated time of arrival, so you can wait at home instead of in the emergency room. Upon entrance, the medical team will triage the patient, deciding action steps. Time in the ER will vary depending on the type of treatment needed. If you experience a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.
New scam in Smith County
TYLER — A new method of scamming citizens has been reported to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. In this scam, the caller identifies himself as a representative of a named financial institution. He then attempts to convince the individual that their home is in danger of being foreclosed. He will actually have the homeowner’s correct address to make the call seem more legitimate. Smith County Tax Office adds drop box for safety, convenience
TYLER — Smith County residents doing business with the Smith County Tax Office can now drop their property tax or auto registration information in a new drop box outside the Cotton Belt Building. County Tax Assessor-Collector Gary Barber called the move “another convenient, safe way to do business with our office.†Barber asked that when dropping information off, people write their phone numbers on the envelope so the Tax Office can call them if any issues come up or questions need to be answered. He also said they will not accept cash left in the drop box. He said there is a sign pointing to the drop box, which is on the Glenwood Boulevard side of the Cotton Belt Building. He said they will be installing lights at the drop box and an overhead awning to make it more convenient to use in the rain and at night. Traffic switch scheduled for SH 334
HENDERSON COUNTY — The Texas Department of Transportation is preparing to make a traffic switch on the SH 334 Bridge Project between Seven Points and Gun Barrel City. Traffic is scheduled to be moved on Thurs., Jan. 7. The switch, tentatively set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, will place traffic in its new lane configuration onto the new bridges adjacent to the existing bridges across Cedar Creek Lake. Officials say traffic flow will be impacted during the process, and drivers should expect delays as the changes are implemented. ETCOG announces $2.1 million dollars dispersed
KILGORE — The distribution of over $2 million dollars was announced Tuesday, by the East Texas Council of Governments. ETCOG said, area agencies that help crime victims, and those who improve public safety will receive $2.1 million dollars in grant money, from the Office of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division. ETCOG’s Public Safety Division assists jurisdictions in applying for these funds annually, and applications to be submitted for funding are ranked and scored by the ETCOG Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, which is comprised of local subject matter experts from across the region.
