TYLER — A portion of Smith County Road 1113, also known as Lake Placid Road, will be closed starting next week so a culvert can be replaced. The project covers just under two miles of roadway between Greenbriar Road and CR 1141. The work will require the closing of Lake Placid Road to through traffic between Greenbriar Road and CR 1101. It all begins this Monday and will last about six weeks. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes. Message boards alerting the public of the closure have been installed on Lake Placid Road by the contractor.
Man sentenced to 7 years prison for pawning stolen items from client in his care
TYLER — A Tyler man was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for pawning stolen items that he admitted to taking from a dementia patient under his care. According to our news partner KETK, Delbert Simpson Jr., 35, had been caring for a man suffering from Parkinson’s and dementia since February 2018. His family became suspicious in September 2019 when they contacted authorities to document several items in their home were missing. A week later, the daughter called back reporting even more items were missing and they wanted to file an additional report and press charges.
NET RMA announces work between HWY 31 and I-20
TYLER — Drivers should be prepared for delays on Toll 49 between HWY 31 and I-20 on Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Northeast Texas Regional Mobility Authority announced seal coat work and other maintenance assignments that are scheduled for the main lanes, shoulders, overpasses and underpasses. Motorists are urged to watch for guidance on message boards while work is being completed.
Smith County Elections Administrator resigns after months on the job
TYLER — Two days after presiding over her first elections race in Smith County, Elections Administrator Denise Hernandez is stepping down. According to our news partner KETK, Hernandez submitted a letter of resignation Monday to Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran. Hernandez was hired in January. Her last day is Friday. The county elections commission will find her replacement. Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran, Tax Assessor-Collector Gary Barber, County Clerk Karen Phillips, Democratic Party Chair Michael Tolbert and Republican Party Chair David Stein all make up the commission. The group will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday. The county did not publicly respond regarding Hernandez, only saying “Smith County does not comment on personnel matters.â€
Details released in weekend wreck that killed Tyler High student
TYLER — The Texas Department of Public Safety announced preliminary investigation results from a fatal weekend wreck that killed a Tyler High student. DPS said Tuesday that Troopers responded to a fatal crash on HWY 31 that killed a passenger, Patrianna Damrye Pettigrew, 18, of Tyler. Investigators believe that weather played a factor in the wreck eight miles east of Tyler. Authorities say the driver Talia Janae Smith lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line hitting Logan Qualls, 18, Winona. Qualls was transported to UT Health East Texas Tyler in stable condition. Smith, 20, of Tyler was transported to UT Health East Texas Tyler in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation.
Fire marshal addresses county court
TYLER — The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office is ahead of pace with fires this year. On Tuesday, Marshall Jay Brooks updated the Smith Count Commissioner’s Court, reporting that the joint Emergency Operations Center with the City of Tyler and the county have met for more than a year dealing with issues regarding the pandemic. To date there have been 73 in-person EOC meetings and 327 virtual meetings. Brooks went on to say that costs incurred by the county from February’s Winter Storm are still being calculated and will be turned in to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Read more here.
Man arrested in fatal shooting in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE — A Jacksonville man is dead after being fatally shot on Monday. According to our news partner KETK, Jacksonville police and fire departments responded to a call just after noon on Myrtle Drive. Mathew W. Nock, 33, was taken to UT Health in Jacksonville, then, flown to UT Health Tyler where he later died. Police arrested Christopher M. Blackwell, 35, of Jacksonville in connection with the shooting death. Witnesses told investigators a verbal dispute took place before the incident. Blackwell was arrested at the scene and taken to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators and the Texas Rangers continue investigating the shooting.
Man arrested on DWI charge for second time since fatal DWI 2017 crash
LONGVIEW — A Longview man awaiting a trial in a fatal drunk driving wreck from 2017 was rearrested over the weekend for DUI. According to our new partner KETK, Corie Murray was arrested early Sunday morning. Online judicial records show this to be his second arrest for alleged drunk driving since the fatal crash. Murray is charged with driving while intoxicated and for two drug possession charges. Murray is accused of intoxicated manslaughter in an October 2017 wreck that killed Billie Griffin Andrews, 64, of Woodville. Murray has been released on bond. His trial is scheduled to begin May 24.
Perfect attendance awards and COVID-19
TYLER — Texas is one of a handful of states that still bases public school funding on student attendance. Many districts incentivize students to attend when they are not up to it, whether physically or mentally. The Northeast Texas Public Health District’s George Roberts told KTBB News, “I continue to encourage people, number one, to stay home when you are sick. So, if a kid is sick, whether it’s a pandemic or not, they shouldn’t be going to school…” Roberts was asked if he thought that awards for perfect attendance would be going away post COVID-19, “That’s a reasonable question. My guess is that they still have some type of perfect because you want to reward people who stay healthy.” Texas HB 1246 would fund Texas schools based on enrollment and not attendance.

TYLER — UT Health East Texas Physicians opened a COVID-19 Recovery Clinic Monday at UT Health North Campus Tyler. According to our news partner KETK, the clinic is designed to treat patients who continue to experience lingering symptoms. KC Steel to perform Tuesday night on Kilgore campus
KILGORE — The Kilgore College Department of Music and Dance announced a presentation of the college’s new steel drum ensemble, KC Steel, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The performance will take place in the main room of the Baptist Student Ministries (BSM) building on the Kilgore campus. KC’s director of bands, Brent Farmer, said in a prepared statement, “Steel drums originate from Trinidad and Tobago, and have a very colorful history. The music department was able to purchase these instruments thanks to an Innovation Grant we applied for here at KC.†Traditional selections for steel drum band have been readied, as well as more contemporary pieces. The concert is free and open to the public.
East Texas airports receiving COVID-19 funding
TYLER — Several East Texas airports are receiving relief grant funding. A media brief from U.S. Senator John Cornyn, indicated seven airports will see a total of $184,500 in an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19. The funds were provided through the Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020. In a prepared statement, Senator Cornyn said, “More and more Texans are getting vaccinated every day and we’ve seen an uptick in air travel as a result. Crowd sends alleged shooter to hospital
RUSK COUNTY — Two people were arrested over the weekend for their involvement in a brawl holding down an alleged shooter. According to our news partner KETK, a man shot a gun into a crowd following a horse race Saturday night. Before two-off duty Rusk County Investigators could arrest the man, a crowd began assaulting him. As authorities were trying to clear out the brawl, one man is said to have taken a swing at one of the officers and a second man in the crowd tried to escape. David Gonzalez, 32, was arrested for assault on a security officer. Juan Carmelo Cerda-Martinez was arrested for evading arrest. The shooting suspects name will be released, once he is no longer being treated for injuries in the hospital and he is formally charged with the crime.
Registration open for Summer Playground Program & Glass Camp
TYLER — The Tyler Parks and Recreation Department opened registration Monday for the Summer Playground Program and the Glass Summer Camp this summer. The Glass Summer Camp will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a cost of $100 per child, with available early drop-off and late pick-up at an additional fee. Space at Glass is limited to 40 kids. The Summer Playground Program runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is free of cost. Structured activities are for kids 6 to 12 years old. Playground and camp leaders will be on-site at each location leading sports games, arts and crafts, water activities and special visits from local organizations. Ore City man arrested on murder charge in Upshur County
UPSHUR COUNTY — A man has been arrested in Upshur County accused in the murder of an Ore City man. According to our news partner KETK, Robert Lee Travis, 41, was accused of killing Braiden Robinson, Saturday night. Robinson was 32. Authorities say, the shooting took place around 10 p.m. on Salvia Rd, near HWY 259, just North of Ore City. Police have not given a possible motive for the shooting, or if the two even knew each other. Travis awaits his first court appearance in the Upshur County Jail. Bond is $100,000.
Skunk tests positive for rabies in Smith County
TYLER — A rabid skunk was found in Smith county late last week. In a prepared statement, Animal Control and Shelter Supervisor Amber Greene said, “We do ask that you make sure that all of your animals are up-to-date on at least their rabies vaccinations. If you see any wildlife acting in complete opposite than their normal self, please contact us. If your pets attack a sick wildlife or come in some kind of contact with wildlife, please contact us.†Animal control officers are in the area handing out information.
Diva Dua coming back to Mineola
TYLER — iTRI365 ® and Grand Oaks Winery in Mineola have announced the Diva Du Women- Endurance Event is May 22. The Diva Du, a female-only endurance event featuring two races, is in its sixth year. The Duathlon Sprint individual and team relay consists of a 1.5-mile run, ten-mile bike, and concludes with an additional 1.5-mile run. There will also be an opportunity for women of all levels to come out and test your strengths with the annual 5K. The Diva Du also includes wine afterwards at the venue along with a post race meal. Identity released of man killed in three car accident over the weekend
TYLER — Tyler Police released the identity a person, Monday, who died in a three-vehicle crash over the weekend. Officers acted in response to the intersection of Loop 323 and Troup Highway. A 61-year-old man from Bullard was killed in the head-on collision. Police say Charles Thomas Reese, was riding in a Jeep traveling westbound on Loop 323. A truck traveling eastbound crossed into the westbound lanes, which first hit a car, then collided head-on with the Jeep. Reese died at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
BBB announces 2021 Awards for Excellence winners
TYLER — The Better Business Bureau Serving Central East Texas presented the 2021 BBB Awards for Excellence in a televised production Sunday. According to a news release, the honors went to “five companies and one nonprofit organization who exemplify ethical behavior and display integrity in all aspects of their operations; toward their employees, vendors, customers, and within their community.” A total of 25 organizations were nominated for the awards. Sheriff Smith favors “constitutional carry”
AUSTIN — “Constitutional carry,” authored by Tyler state Representative Matt Schaefer continues making its way through the state Senate. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith was among those testifying last week in favor of the measure. He explained that deputies have a 15-minute response time in rural areas of the county and victims are on their own until deputies arrive. The bill was approved by the House, then, stalled in the senate before moving forward. If passed, the measure would make it legal to carry a handgun in public without a license.
TxDOT’s weekly roadwork update
TYLER — TxDOT is planning to conduct another week’s worth of construction and maintenance work in the Tyler District during the week of May 3. Work schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure, or other unforeseen issues. Among other things, Tyler motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays as crews implement mill and inlay operations on SH 31 at Loop 323, and on Loop 323 from SH 31 to Sam’s Club. Two-year-old dies after swimming accident
KILGORE — The East Texas 2-year-old who was fighting for his life after a swimming accident at a Kilgore hotel has died. According to our news partner KETK, Luke Wayne Killough died April 30 due to brain trauma. Luke was about to go swimming with his sister when he slipped and fell in a hot tub. He was able to donate to other kids in similar situations. His blood type was a universal donor and he was able to possibly save six or more children. Local elections held Saturday
EAST TEXAS — The results are in for local elections around East Texas. None of the Tyler contests were close. In city council races, Stuart Hene earned his first term, while incumbents Shirley McKellar and Bob Westbrook retained their seats. Incumbent Tyler ISD board members Yvonne Atkins and Aaron Martinez will also be returning to office. Learn more here. Smith County cleanup set for May 3-29
TYLER — Smith County leaders are reminding residents of the Smith Countywide Cleanup. The dates are May 3-29 and allow residents one free trip to the landfill. The program enables residents a complimentary truckload of bulky items, up to three cubic yards of solid waste, to be dropped off at the Greenwood Farms Landfill. The county says one voucher is available per resident at the Courthouse Annex on East Ferguson in Tyler or at any of the Justice of the Peace Constable Offices throughout the county. Detective Gregg Roberts retires
TYLER — Detective Gregg Roberts has retired after 33 years of service with the Tyler Police Department. According to a news release, Roberts began his career at the department on January 14, 1988. He worked as a patrol officer, Crime Stoppers officer, property crimes detective, and crimes against persons detective. He ended his career as a detective assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Service Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force. Roberts received several awards during his long career, including two Meritorious Conduct awards, a Police Commendation, two Life Saving awards, three Certificates of Merit, a Certificate of Civic Achievement, and Plainclothes Officer of the Year. Roberts was also a member of the Tyler Police Department SWAT Team.
Whitehouse man arrested after high-speed chase
TYLER — 34-year-old Raymond Morgan of Whitehouse faces multiple charges after he reportedly led Smith County deputies on a high-speed chase Friday evening. According to our news partner KETK, law officials said the pursuit began after they tried to complete a traffic stop near Dogwood City, with the chase at times going more than 100 mph. Officials said the pursuit lasted 20 minutes, ending on Old Omen near Charleston Park across from UT Tyler. Authorities were able to stop the car by spiking it and arrested Morgan right before 9 p.m. after he reportedly fled on foot. HCSO arrests 4 in Athens
ATHENS — Henderson county deputies arrested four individuals in Athens Friday. Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said Sabian Young, 21, was a wanted fugitive, and was arrested on Jonathan Street. That encounter, led to a second warrant from the 392 District Court to a residence where three people were arrested. A gun, cash, drugs, and two automobiles were seized at the residence. Justin Young, 20, Ja’Quaylon Bowman, 19, and Laporcha Brown, 22, were all placed in the Henderson County Jail on numerous charges.
Palestine police needing help identifying shooter of 4
PALESTINE — Palestine police continue investigating what happened at a Palestine night club Sunday morning after a man entered the building and shot four people. According to reports, a black man entered the Daquiri King, on W. Palestine Ave., about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and started shooting into a group of people before running away. Police Chief Mark Harcrow said in a prepared statement, “We know there was some sort of conflict prior to the shooting. Detectives are working to identify the suspect and motive behind the shooting.†The four shot were transported to the hospital with what was described as non-life threatening injuries. Anyone with any information, is asked to call the Palestine Police Department at 903-731-2254 or Anderson County Crime Stoppers at 903-729-8477.
TISD honors leading educators at annual banquet
TYLER — Tyler ISD announced its 2021 Teachers of the Year at the annual Tyler ISD Educator of the Year Banquet Thursday night. The evening also celebrated the Rookie of the Year, and Principal of the Year. The 2021 Rookie of the Year is Jade Perry, a second-grade teacher at Jones Elementary School. Ashley Phelps from Andy Woods Elementary School is the District Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Ashley LaCroix from Moore MST Magnet School is the District Secondary Teacher of the Year. Phelps and LaCroix will now compete for Regional Teacher of the Year through the Region 7 Service Center. Historically, the Principal of the Year award honors a principal. This year, after fighting COVID-19 all year, Superintendent Marty Crawford named them all Principal of the Year. Read more here.
