TYLER – The City of Tyler is seeking feedback from residents regarding their Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Annual Work Plan. According to our news partner KETK, residents have until Oct. 20 to provide comments and suggestions about projects in the CIP program that will be funded by a half cent sales tax.

The city of Tyler said in a release, “Current projects on the Capital Improvement Plan include drainage improvements, street repairs, updates to Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, railroad crossing improvements, the South Tyler Mobility Study, upgrading traffic signals as part of year four of the Intelligent Transportation Master Plan and more.”

TYLER – The 2024 Tyler Film Festival, presented by Dobbs & Porter, brought together a diverse array of filmmakers during the three-day event at Liberty Hall. The festival premiered 25 short films from over eight countries with various genres, including documentaries, stop-animation, dramas, comedies and more. 

In a release from TFF, Craig O’Daniel, festival director and judge said, “The films that won awards this year impressed our judges with their meticulous attention to every aspect of filmmaking, resulting in masterful storytelling. We genuinely thank the teams for submitting their work and giving our little festival a worldwide showcase.”

BULLARD – Six Medal of Honor veterans, and two family members of recipients were honored in Bullard during a two day event. According to our news partner KETK, they were greeted on Friday morning by children with flags waving in hand.

“That was amazing, just enjoyable, gives a tingle,” Medal of Honor recipient and US Army veteran Robert Patterson said.
The war heroes told stories from the battlefield and gave advice to The Brook Hill School students on Friday. In the evening the Medal of Honor honorees were celebrated at the Texas Veterans Military Hero Dinner.

Major General Patrick Brady, who has served for over 30 years in the United States Army, is one of the most decorated U.S. veterans with 80 medals.

UPDATE: On Saturday, the Longview Police Department said that Jerry Randolph has been found.

LONGVIEW – A 30-year-old man was reported missing from Longview on Thursday. Police said that Jerry Randolph was last seen around 11 p.m. Wednesday night on Independence Drive and Patriot Circle, wearing a multicolored graphic t-shirt, jeans and brown hiking boots. Randolph is 5’5″ tall and weighs around 160 lbs with short black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Longview PD at 903-237-1199.

LONGVIEW — A Gilmer man has been arrested following a fatal Friday morning shooting in Longview. According to our news partner KETK, Longview Police said at around 10:15 a.m., officers responded to a shots fired call on McCann Road, near Barksdale Federal Credit Union . When officers arrived, they reportedly found 20-year-old Dequalin Vaughn of Longview with a gunshot wound. Vaughn was taken to a hospital where he later died.

During their investigation, LPD detectives identified the suspect in the shooting as 23-year-old Eddie Floyd Hill Jr. Hill Jr. was found in Gilmer and booked into the Upshur County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm, deadly conduct and murder. He was also wanted on felony charges from a case in Marshall.

UPDATE: The Amber Alert for missing 6-year-old Kameron Parrish has been canceled after he was found late Friday night, according to authorities.

INGRAM — An Amber Alert was issued for a 6-year-old boy who is missing after last being seen Thursday just before noon in Ingram. According to our news partner KETK, missing is 6-year-old Kameron Parrish. Kameron is described as being 4’8″, 55 lbs, and has brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a two-tone grey t-shirt with blue sleeves, blue jeans, and dark shoes. Authorities believe the child “to be in grave or immediate danger.”

Kameron was last seen with 32-year-old Talaya Graham, authorities said. Talaya was described as being 5’3″, 175 lbs, and has brown hair and green eyes. Officials are also also searching for 39-year-old Joseph Graham in connection with the abduction of the child. Joseph was described as a 5’5″, 175 lbs white man with brown hair and brown eyes. Law enforcement said he has a neck tattoo on left side, name in black and outlined in green.

Authorities said Graham is believed to be driving a Silver 2014 Nissan Versa with Texas license plate number TLS5425. She was also last seen in Ingram. Ingram is in Kerr County, 72 miles northwest of San Antonio.

LONGVIEW – Two people were found with gunshot wounds Thursday night and the Longview Police Department are investigating. According to our news partner KETK, LPD responded to reports of a shooting around 11:30 p.m. in the Misty Glen Court area. Officers said they found one female victim and one male victim had non-life threatening gunshot wounds and were sent to a hospital for treatment.

Longview Police Department said this is an open investigation and are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the police department at 903-237-1110.

DENVER — Our news partners at KETK report that on Friday morning, a big arrest was announced when it comes to fentanyl. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann and Denver Chief of Police Ron Thomas said they arrested a fentanyl distributor in California who allegedly sold fentanyl to a man from Tyler in Denver who died. Denver police and the Denver DA’s office said they arrested Jamal Gamal who lives in San Francisco. They are charging him with the distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, which holds a similar prison sentence as homicide. He is expected to be brought back to Denver on Sept. 16 to face charges. Gamal was allegedly selling drugs online and mailing them to the buyers. Unfortunately, these pills were deadly. Police and the DA said that between Nov. 9-19, 2023, Gamal sold fentanyl to Collin Walker, 28 of Tyler, and that caused his death. According to Walker’s obituary, he attended All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler and was attending the Metropolitan State University of Denver when he died. LINDALE — US 69 in Lindale has reopened following an early Thursday morning wreck involving an 18-wheeler carrying 8,000 gallons and a white pickup truck.  According to our news partner KETK, the wreck occurred at around 6:30 a.m. causing nearly 5,000 gallons to be spilled. The driver and passenger of the white pickup truck were extracted.

“It was noted that this extrication was an extremely difficult one due to the nature of how the vehicles collided. PALESTINE (AP) — Texas’s highest criminal court on Wednesday declined to stop the execution next month of Robert Roberson, who was sentenced to death in 2003 for killing his 2-year-old daughter, but who has consistently challenged his conviction on the claim that it was based on questionable science.

Without reviewing the merits of Roberson’s claims, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday dismissed both a motion to halt the execution and a new application for relief filed by his attorneys. That leaves Roberson’s execution on track for Oct. 17, unless he can win clemency from the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles. LONGVIEW – Don Paul Rickman, 39 of Longview, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl resulting in death and was sentenced to 20 years in prison by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker. Rickman reportedly admitted to selling purported prescription pills that were later found to be laced with fentanyl. A person he sold to was then found dead in their bedroom from a fentanyl overdose by their mother.

LINDALE, Texas – US 69 in Lindale has reopened following an early morning wreck involving an 18-wheeler, tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons and a white pickup truck. It was reported by our news partner KETK that three people were injured in the crash, and that authorities are searching for surveillance footage to find the cause. Lindale Police said in a statement that parents should not be concerned about picking up their children from schools.

SMITH COUNTY — Our news partner KETK reports that Nadarius Tyreque Houston, 24 of Tyler, has been charged with murder. The victim, 23-year-old Cory Darell Long, died in a Tyler hospital due to a fentanyl overdose on April 17. Houston was arrested in April for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was then booked into the Smith County Jail. On Tuesday, authorities got an arrest affidavit for murder for Houston with a bond of $500,000. Houston, who was already in jail, had the charge added to his others.

PALESTINE – Our news partners at KETK report a man was arrested after confessing to police that he had downloaded child pornography. Palestine Police Department Detective Winebrenner, an affiliate with the Texas Attorney General’s Office Southern Texas Internet Crimes Against Children’s Taskforce, got a tip about a suspect downloading child pornography. PPD executed a search warrant in the 100 block of Bent Tree Drive and several electronic devices “believed to contain child pornography” were seized. After the search warrant, Derek Hernandez was interviewed by police. “During the interview, Hernandez confessed to downloading child pornography onto his digital devices,” according to police. “An arrest warrant was obtained for Hernandez, and Hernandez was arrested for possession of child pornography.” Police said more charges are pending as the digital forensic investigation continues.

TYLER – Our news partners at KETK report a Tyler resident won $2 million in the Texas Lottery after visiting a local gas station. The winner, who elected to remain anonymous, won the top prize ticket in the scratch game Ultimate Riches. That game offers four $2 million prizes and more than $136.1 million in total prizes. The ticket was bought at Grab A Snack at 15010 Highway 155 S. in Tyler.

TYLER — The City of Tyler adopted their 2025 budget, that totals $255.9 million and lowers the tax rate, during their Wednesday meeting. According to our news partner KETK, the budget, a 6% increase from last year, addresses improved roadways and traffic flow, enhanced drainage systems, upgraded water and sewer infrastructure and redeveloping public spaces. $50 million will go to water and sewer systems upgrades, while $41.4 million will be devoted to traffic signal improvements, street reconstruction, drainage and redevelopment of the downtown square funded by half-cent sales tax revenue.

The new tax rate is lowered to $0.240085, which the city says maintains their position as having the lowest tax rate in Smith County and among Texas cities with populations above 15,000. GREGG COUNTY — A man was sentenced to 55 years after pleading guilty to a 2017 murder. According to our news partner KETK, 28-year-old Cody Fortman from DeSoto was sentenced in a Gregg County court on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty back in June 2022 to the murder charge. He is charged in connection to the death of 22-year-old Nicholas Trevion Johnson, a Longview man who was found dead from gunshot wounds in a home on Annette Drive.

TYLER — According to our news partner KETK, a man died after a pursuit through several East Texas counties resulted in an officer-involved shooting in Smith County. DPS reports that they started a pursuit of a stolen box truck in Forney, stretching through several East Texas counties including Rains, Wood and Smith. Troopers tried to disable the vehicle several times to no avail.

“Through his driving behavior, the suspect demonstrated an egregious and reckless disregard for other motorists, leading Troopers to reasonably believe his actions of harming a bystander were imminent,” according to a statement from DPS. “A THP Trooper discharged his firearm at the suspect’s vehicle on State Highway 31 near Tyler, ultimately ending the pursuit.”

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the situation as per standard procedure.

TYLER — Officials described the conditions of nearly 60 dogs that were found during the investigation of a Smith County dog fighting ring. According to our news partner KETK, on Monday the Smith County Sherriff’s Office and Animal Control Services responded to the address of 9444 CR 4136 in Tyler after receiving a call that a witness had seen a dog eating the carcass of a dead dog. When officials arrived, they reportedly found over 40 dogs in poor condition and “had reason to believe they were possibly being used to fight.” The detective on the case, Jacob Herman, said he had previously investigated reports of possible dog fighting at the address, but no dogs or evidence could be located on the property until Monday.

The detective, animal control personnel and property owner Kerry Jones walked through the property where they located several dogs in poor conditions, according to an affidavit.

“As I walked through, I observed several dogs to be locked in cages with their ribs showing and in a state of malnourishment. Many of the dogs had fresh injuries with visible blood and scars that were consistent with being fought,” Herman said. “Some appeared lethargic and unable to move. TYLER – Our news partners at KETK report a pursuit of a box truck through Smith County turned into an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday morning. According to officials, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office and DPS were in a pursuit through several East Texas counties including Rains, Wood and Smith that ended on Highway 31 W and FM 2661. An officer-involved shooting occurred, but details are limited at this time.

TYLER – Our news partners at KETK report a Tyler man was arrested Tuesday night after leading police on a pursuit and endangering a child, authorities said. Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh said at around 8 p.m. officers saw a vehicle facing oncoming traffic. Witnesses told police the driver, identified as 34-year-old Courtland Lindsay of Tyler, appeared to have a young child on his lap and talked about harming the child with what looked like a drill. Sgt. Larry Christian with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office said Tyler PD initiated the pursuit and then deputies assisted. Erbaugh said Lindsay evaded officers until the pursuit ended on Loop 323 and U.S. 271. Police freed the child, who was unharmed, and they were picked up by a relative, Erbaugh said. Lindsay was charged with abandoning or endangering a child and placing them in imminent danger, evading arrest with a vehicle and marijuana possession. He was booked into the Smith County Jail.

GREGG COUNTY — The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office said an intoxicated driver hit a sheriff’s deputy while he worked a rollover accident Tuesday afternoon. According to the sheriff’s office and our news partner KETK, responders were working a one-vehicle rollover on FM 1252 around 3:45 p.m. when a eastbound Honda hit and injured a sheriff’s deputy. DPS troopers arrested the driver, Rigoberto Meza, 71, of Longview.

“We’re relieved to report that the deputy has been treated for his injuries at a local hospital and has been released,” GCSO said. “He is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.”

DPS troopers arrested the Honda driver and officials said the driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, no driver’s license and no insurance.

TYLER — The University of Texas at Tyler celebrates another record-breaking enrollment year, seeing its highest total enrollment. UT Tyler’s fall 2024 preliminary enrollment as of the Sept. 9 census date is 10,541 students, which is a 7.75% increase over the previous year.

“We are energized by the growth on our campus,” said UT Tyler President Julie V. Philley, MD. “I want to thank our admissions team, faculty and staff for their dedication to supporting our students, as well as our recruitment and retention initiatives.”

First-time-in-college freshmen enrollment made up 1,426 of the total preliminary enrollment, which is a 7.5% increase over the previous record year of 2022. Additionally, UT Tyler continued enhancing retention rates among graduate/professional students. Graduate enrollment saw a second consecutive year of substantial growth by 14.02%, with a preliminary enrollment of 2,765. RUSK COUNTY — Rusk County authorities said minor injuries have been reported after a crash involving a Tatum ISD school bus Wednesday morning. According to the Rusk County Emergency Management Office and our news partner KETK, shortly after 7 a.m. they were notified of a crash involving a school bus that was carrying students. “A large response was initiated and we do have confirmation from first responders on the scene of some minor injuries,” Rusk County officials said.

Tatum ISD said they have contacted immediate contacts of all that were involved. DPS is investigating the crash. If anyone has questions they are urged to contact the district at 903-947-0167 or 903-947-0161.

PALESTINE — An investigation into a stolen vehicle in Palestine has led to multiple arrests and two people who are wanted. According to the Palestine Police Department and our news partner KETK, on Sept. 2 at approximately 3:36 p.m. officers responded to the Woodside Village Apartments at 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd for recovery of a stolen vehicle. The victim had told PPD that their vehicle had been stolen from the Texas A&M University campus the night before and a tracking device in the vehicle showed that it was at the apartment complex, officials said.

According to officials, when officers arrived at the apartment they located the vehicle and three men walking from the vehicle into an apartment. HAWKINS – The Hawkins ISD Board of Trustees accepted Superintendent Susan Morton’s retirement on Monday following her recent arrest for driving while intoxicated, according o our news partners at KETK. Morton was arrested after a minor accident in La Marque, Texas on Aug. 23 by the La Marque Police Department. Morton was then booked into the Galveston County Jail for charges of driving while intoxicated and collision involving damage to a vehicle less than $200. The Hawkins ISD Board of Trustee’s meeting agenda for Monday night’s meeting included plans to consider Morton’s retirement and interim superintendent candidates. Board president Blake Warren shared that during the meeting they voted to hire Marc Levesque for interim superintendent.

TYLER — According to our news partner KETK, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office have arrested two men in connection to a dog fighting bust north of Tyler on Monday where nearly 60 dogs and two cats were seized.

The sheriff’s office said at around noon on Monday the Smith County Animal Control were notified after someone found wounded dogs near a home on CR 4136. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office arrested 34-year-old Kerry Jones of Tyler and 31-year-old Michael Jones. Kerry has been charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals and participating in the earnings of or operations of a facility used for dog fighting. TYLER – On Monday, more than 50 dogs were taken in an alleged dog fighting bust, now the dogs are receiving care at a clinic in Smith County according to our news partner KETK. Six seriously injured dogs were rushed to Spence and White Veterinary Hospital in Tyler. They are some of the dozens taken from a Smith County property on Monday. These dogs suffered some of the worst abuse, and are suspected to have been used for dog fighting. They have marks visible to their faces, legs and stomachs. Some wounds were even stapled by their owners.
