LONGVIEW — Longview Police were dispatched to an armed subject call just before 11:00 Sunday night on Morrison Street. Arriving officers encountered the suspect, who reportedly reached for and produced a handgun. The officer then shot, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Following the Longview Police Department’s procedures, the Texas Rangers were requested to conduct the investigation. Additional information was not available.
TYLER — Keep Tyler Beautiful and the Tyler Solid Waste Department are hosting a Paint Recycling/Collection Event on Saturday, May 20 for Tyler residents who have old and partially used buckets of paint that they would like to dispose. Residents may bring up to 25 gallons of latex or non-latex paint to the Solid Waste employee parking lot in the 300 block of N. Bois D’Arc Ave. on May 20 between 8 a.m. and noon. The Solid Waste employee parking lot is located just north of the intersection of W. Locust Street and N. Elections are on the ballot for the Independent School Districts of Bullard, Chapel Hill, Lindale, and Tyler District 4; as well as for the City of Winona and Emergency Services District No. 1. TYLER — Tyler Police responded to multiple reports of a male walking around waving a firearm in the air and yelling outside of Super 1 Foods and Academy on South Broadway Avenue around 7:20 p.m. Thursday. According to our news partner KETK and Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh, when officers arrived and approached the man, he turned the gun on himself. Tyler Fire and UT EMS were then dispatched to the scene. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.
TYLER — Select Tyler Transit downtown stops closed on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6, 2023. Normal operations will resume on Monday, May 8. Due to the Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival this Saturday, May 6, Tyler Transit will deviate Route 10 and Route 14 starting Friday, May 5. TYLER — Early voting ends with low turnouts in parts of East Texas. Tuesday marked the last day to vote early in East Texas as local races are once again expected to be close come election night. “It affects your life,†said Smith County Elections Administrator Michelle Allcon. According to our news partner KETK, an important race in Smith County with a lot of money at stake is the Chapel Hill ISD bond that is worth $125 million dollars. It’s the third time the proposal will be up for election and exactly a year ago, it failed by less than 50 votes. TYLER — A Tyler roadway is partially blocked off Wednesday morning due to a sinkhole in the area of Commerce Street at Oakwood Drive, our news partner KETK reports. Officials at the scene said the sinkhole was caused by a water main break and estimate about four hours for repair.
LONGVIEW — A former Longview ISD employee was sentenced to nine years deferred adjudication on Monday after pleading guilty to sexual assault of a child. According to our news partner KETK, Richard Williams, 30, of Longview, was arrested and accused of having an improper relationship with a student in 2018. According to an affidavit, Williams, who was employed as an aid by Longview ISD, began a sexual relationship with a then 16-year-old that lasted nearly nine months before the girl told her parents. The two also knew each other from church and Williams was reported to be the child’s pastor at the time of his arrest. He was indicted for sexual assault of a child in August 2019, and pleaded guilty on Monday. Officials with Longview ISD at the time said this was an isolated incident.
LONGVIEW — The City of Longview recently celebrated the opening of their new Fire Station No. 5. A ribbon cutting made the new location official, which is at 102 W. Niblick Street, our news partner KETK reports. The renovation/addition to the existing station built in 1985 was projected to cost roughly $5.34 million, but the final cost came out to $4.85 million. It will serve as an administrative wing for meetings and physical training. “We couldn’t be more excited,†said Longview Fire Chief J.P. TYLER — East Texas cities are once again asking for lifeguard help ahead of summer. According to our news partner KETK, over the last couple of years, public pools across the area have experienced major lifeguard shortages. There were several reasons for the shortages: the pandemic, people moving onto different jobs and not enough potential candidates getting qualified. This year could be the same if pools around the area don’t attract enough lifeguards. The recreation manager for Tyler Parks and Recreation Kandice Johnson said last summer was tough for everyone. “Last summer I was on the phone every day with another city asking, ‘what are y’all doing to get lifeguards?’,†said Johnson. “There’s like a shortage. TYLER — A bill to help funding for public school educators is making its way through the Texas Legislature, but school officials said the bill in it’s current state just isn’t enough. According to our news partner KETK, Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford was joined by representatives from Alba-Golden, Bullard, Carthage, Cushing, Brownsboro, Lindale, Longview, Mineola, Palestine, Pine Tree, Troup, Tyler, Union Grove and Whitehouse on Monday to call on the legislature to increase public school funding. Sounding what they called a “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!†alarm on May 1, the districts urged supporters to contact state lawmakers to support increased school funding. TYLER — To help restock the Community Pet Food Bank, Tyler Animal Services will waive adoption fees for dogs and cats with the donation of at least three bags of dog or cat food of any size during the month of May. The Pet Food Bank was established in 2015 so families in need or those who could not afford to feed their pets would have a safety net to keep them in their homes. Many times, people who want to surrender a pet to Tyler Animal Control and Shelter only need time to get over a short-term financial hurdle. The Pet Food Bank provides assistance through donated food and cat litter, and so far, 30,000 pounds of food and litter have been distributed over the years. Read the rest of this entry »
TYLER — The Bed Bath and Beyond stores in Tyler and Longview are both closing and offering store-wide sales, according to employees. Local store employees confirmed to our news partner KETK that they are closing and that everything in the store is between 10% and 30% off. Bed Bath and Beyond’s website said similar sales are happening across the country. The stores in East Texas are closing along with every Bed Bath & Beyond store nationwide after the chain filled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier in April, according to the Associated Press. It is unknown when the stores will officially close but the last day to use any gift cards or store credit is May 8, 2023, according to the company’s website.
CHEROKEE COUNTY — Beginning Monday, May 8, the Texas Department of Transportation will begin widening operations on FM 768 in Jacksonville. The work will widen the roadway from 18 feet to 23 feet, from Loop 456 in Jacksonville to FM 22. Motorists should expect lane closures while work is in progress with flaggers and a pilot car controlling traffic. Delays are expected.
TYLER – Memorial services have been set for an Arp High School senior who passed Wednesday after a car crash in Smith County. Services for Thomas Fuller will be held at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler with a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and the funeral service will be on Monday at 10 a.m. “Thank you very much for your support during this difficult time for our school district,†Arp ISD said. “Grief counselors are available for Arp ISD students and staff as needed on all three of our campuses.†The school district said Fuller was a member of the football team, powerlifting team and ran track during his junior year.
TYLER — On Wednesday, April 26, the Tyler City Council approved a resolution of support accepting the results of the Downtown Tyler Traffic Study and supporting the use of Option 2: Hybrid Tapered Approach when making decisions for improvements in Downtown Tyler. The Downtown Traffic Study was developed by Kimley-Horn and approved by the City Council on August 24, 2022. The study used recommendations from Toole Design, which has been working with the City since the beginning of 2022, to create a concept to support revitalization efforts in the Downtown area. BULLARD — A police officer and an alleged intoxicated driver were injured after a high-speed pursuit. According to a Bullard PD Facebook post, on Tuesday, around 1:20 a.m., a police sergeant attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 69 in Bullard. Officials said the driver of the vehicle drove away and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle was clocked going at “very high rates of speed†from Highway 69 to several county roads in Cherokee and Smith County. After more than 30 minutes of a vehicle pursuit, police said the driver got out of the vehicle and ran into a heavily wooded area near FM 756. Read the rest of this entry »
MARSHALL — The Marshall Police Department disposed of 253 pounds of unneeded medications collected from the April 22nd Drug Take Back event and the ongoing collection of the past six months. The drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration on April 24 for incineration. The Marshall Police Department encourages residents to properly dispose of unwanted or unused medications. SMITH COUNTY — K9 Joker officially retired on Tuesday after serving with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. He will retire with his handler Juan Cervantes. According to our news partner KETK, Joker is a seven and a half year old Belgian Malinois who has served Smith County for more than six years. Joker has aided officials with hundreds of operations from apprehension of criminals to finding missing persons.
ANGELINA COUNTY — Two individuals have been arrested after forcefully tattooing their children and trying to remove the tattoos once CPS became involved, according to Lt. James Denby with the Zavalla Police Department. Denby said that on April 17, police were notified by CPS about parents tattooing their children and asked for Angelina County officials to be present when they went to the residence where the crime was taking place. TYLER — Tyler police are asking for the public’s help in searching for a Tyler woman last seen on April 7 around 4 p.m. According to our news partner KETK, Paula Belonga, 51, was last seen leaving her apartment complex on Paluxy Drive in her white Chevrolet Impala with license plate number SBV0432. “Paula was last seen wearing a red shirt and dark colored pants,†officials said. “She may have been heading toward the Chapel Hill area.†Anyone who has seen Paula is asked to contact the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000. SMITH COUNTY — At least three Dallas-area people have been arrested for stealing many thousands of gallons of diesel fuel. Ramon Perez Torrez, of Mesquite, Duniesky Ondarza Gonzalez (pictured) and Camila Cruz Concepcion, of Dallas, are charged with organized criminal activity. They are being held in the Smith County Jail on $750, 000 bond each. Four other suspects are being sought. In a long series of thefts last summer, the suspects allegedly used a system in which the pump’s pulsar device charges for about 1/20th of the fuel that’s actually been pumped. For example, in a theft in the community of Heartland, east of Dallas, 2,100 gallons of diesel were stolen, valued at nearly $11,000.

TYLER — The City of Tyler Solid Waste Department and Keep Tyler Beautiful are sponsoring a FREE bulky item collection for City of Tyler residential customers (excluding multi-family home communities and businesses) from Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 5. Those participating in this campaign should place bulky items on the curb by 6 a.m. on Monday, May 1, and no sooner than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 28. LONGVIEW — Longview Police Department said they responded to an apparent murder-suicide that was reported on the 4300 block of Gregg Tex Road around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday. Officials said that when Longview PD officers arrived on scene they found two people dead from apparent gunshot wounds. According to Longview Police Department, investigators determined that Michael Shane Headrick, 41, shot Ashley Lynn Headrick, 33, before shooting himself. Longview Police Department said that their next of kin has been notified and that this an active investigation. If anyone has any information they would like to report about the shooting, officials asked them to call 903-237-1170.
MARSHALL — The Marshall Police Department said they’re investigating the death of a pedestrian after two pedestrians where hit by an 18-wheeler on Saturday around 2:15 a.m. Officials said they responded to the scene at the 5100 block of South East End Boulevard at 2:15 a.m. and found the two pedestrians. One pedestrian was declared dead at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital, according to officials and our news partner KETK. Authorities said that the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured and is not being charged at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville Police Department announced on Saturday that they’re investigating the deaths of two people found near the 1000 block of Clemons Drive. Officials said they received a report of a dead body around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. When Jacksonville PD, Jacksonville Fire Department and EMS arrived at the scene officers found two victims dead from gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Toyn B. McCuin, 37, Bullard, and Coray R. McCuin, 35, Jacksonville. Autopsies have been ordered. Dexter Lynn Davis, 29, Jacksonville, was arrested Saturday night on an unrelated charge, and later charged with capital murder, according to Jacksonville Police. He was booked into the Cherokee County Jail. The Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.
TYLER — The Tyler High School Administration has sent out a letter stating that a student was arrested on campus Friday after a gun was allegedly found in their backpack. According to our news partner KETK, the gun was found after a student reported that another student brought a gun on campus on Friday afternoon, according to the letter which the school sent out to parents and guardians. Officials said that appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken. “The District will file the appropriate complaint, and I have full confidence the legal system will see the penalty to its fullest completion,†Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford shares. “The individual will never be allowed again to enroll in or set foot on Tyler ISD schools and property.†Read the rest of this entry »
TYLER — The southbound far right lane of South Broadway Avenue around Chimney Rock Drive is closed following a Friday morning wreck. Crews are working to replace a traffic signal cabinet that was hit by a car. Police are asking drivers to use caution in the area and requests that drivers use an alternate route if possible.
