HENDERSON COUNTY – The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking leads for three fugitives wanted for various charges. According to our news partner KETK, officials are looking for 42-year-old Patricia Garza of Chandler. She’s wanted for child endangerment. Johnny Lee Carey, 64, of Athens is sought for unauthorized use of a vehicle and 36-year-old Jose Dion Sanders of Dallas is wanted for sex abuse of a child. Authorities ask if you have information on the whereabouts of these three, to please contact them.
TYLER — Contractors have a five day project set up. Crews expect to be busy on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from North Broadway Avenue to West Gentry Parkway Monday, Aug. 29, through Friday, Sept. 2, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Motorists are asked to use caution in the area, follow directions of the crews, and obey all traffic signs. Drivers can expect road closures and lane closures.
SABINE COUNTY – 26-year-old Matthew Hoy Edgar has found himself as a new addition to the Texas Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list. Edgar was convicted in the Halloween 2020 murder of 19-year-old Livye Lewis. He attended trial for that murder in early 2022, but evaded authorities. According to our news partner KETK, the DPS is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of Edgar. Law officers say he has a history of violence and he should be considered armed and dangerous
TEXAS – The Lone Star State Incident Management Team says wherever there are wildfires in Texas, that area becomes a drone no fly zone. According to our news partner KETK, flying hobby drones in areas with wildfires, could get in the way of firefighters doing their job. Making the wildfire larger, more destructive, possibly leading to property loss or death. They also point out, that aircraft used for wildfires, lead planes, airtankers and helicopters, can fly as low as 150 feet. Which is about the same altitude that most hobby drones are flown. The Lone Star State Incident Management Team steps in and helps local authorities when a disaster exceeds its resources and are attached to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
TYLER – On Friday, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith and hundreds of first responders and citizens from our region gathered to mourn the death of deputy Lorenzo Bustos. According to our news partner KETK, the funeral procession advanced carefully from Green Acres Baptist Church to Deputy Bustos’ final resting place, Tyler Memorial Cemetery. Every vehicle that proceeded down the procession route, did so with lights on, serving as a reminder to the dangers to those who protect us. Bustos died early Friday July 29th during a traffic stop when he was struck by an alleged drunk driver. He was 29 and is survived by his wife Gloria and three young children.
TYLER – Tyler Junior College has the Promise Program; which offers free tuition to East Texas students. According to our news partner KETK, TJC is partnering with UT Tyler to reach out to more students and communities in East Texas. Both schools will work together to help families by offering free tuition and make education affordable for their student in getting a degree. Promise Program student Marie Salazar said “I wanted to be part of the program because it was my saving grace, and its lifted so much weight off my shouldersâ€. School officials feel having more access to higher learning will create a better community.
TYLER — After the death of Smith County Sheriff’s deputy Lorenzo Bustos early Friday morning, East Texans and government officials have reached out to express their condolences. According to our news partner KETK, Smith County Judge Nathan Moran asked that all flags across Texas be lowered to half-staff immediately. Governor Greg Abbott responded and said, “Flags may remain at half-staff through the memorial service or upon final interment, at your discretion. Flags should return to full-staff the following day,†a letter from Abbott’s office stated. Deputy Bustos died after being struck by drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop with his training officer.
ANDERSON COUNTY — Anderson County officials set a new court date for Kimberlyn Snider, the former Neches ISD principal accused of tampering with evidence and official oppression. According to our news partner KETK, That new trial date is August 8th. Snider’s first trial, which authorities say she interfered in a child sexual assault investigation at Neches Elementary School, ended in a mistrial in March. Snider has plead not guilty to all charges.
RUSK COUNTY — Leverett’s Chapel ISD was set to have its school board meeting Monday night after their last special meeting was canceled leaving several parents and students upset. Community members say four meetings have been canceled due to board members failing to show up. Some are now questioning the future of this school district. Only two board members were present and three of them are needed for a quorum. This makes it the fourth cancellation in a row. “We have a one-person show here instead of the board of directors involved in the right ways and stuff like that. One person is trying to take over is what it sounded like to me,†said Sandy Williams, alumni of class of 1963. Some alumni and parents say the school board is to blame for failing to show up. PALESTINE — Palestine police arrested a suspect early Saturday morning after he allegedly shot and killed a man in Palestine. According to our news partner KETK, investigators answered a call on North Jackson Street where they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds outside of a residence. He was taken to a local hospital where he died later. Detectives identified the suspect as 40-year-old Julio Castillo-Machado of Palestine. They say the victim, who has not been named, and the suspect knew each other and have had an ongoing feud. Castillo is in the Anderson County jail on a murder charge, with a bond set at $800,000.
MARSHALL (AP) — Officials at Wiley College in East Texas say students graduating from the historically Black college were told at their commencement ceremony that an anonymous donor had paid their balances. Wiley College said in a news release that over 100 students were gathered for graduation Saturday when the school’s president made the announcement. The college said in the news release that the estimated total for the balances owed to the college by the graduating class of 2022 was about $300,000.
TYLER – Tyler voters went to the polls May 7th and voted for a 89 million dollar bond proposal for Tyler ISD. According to our news partner KETK, two projects will be handled: a rebuild of Hubbard Middle School and a creation of an college prep high school. The bond passed with 64 percent of the vote. However in Longview, it was a “no” vote on the Longview ISD school bond proposal. Money asked for was nearly 230 million dollars. That would have been used for LHS campus renovation, a new Early childhood campus, an Events Center and assorted updates and repairs. The bond was defeated by 67 percent of the vote. CHEROKEE COUNTY — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office announced late Saturday evening that a day-long standoff with a man and a hostage came to an end. According to our new partner KETK, authorities confirmed that the victim is safe and the captor is dead. Cherokee Country Sheriff’s officers and the Texas Rangers are continuing their investigation in the case.
TYLER — The search is over for a suspect in the shooting of two 13-year-old girls around 8 o’clock Saturday night in North Tyler. Tyler police reported Monday that 17-year-old Jaqualin Xavier Humphrey of Tyler turned himself in to members of the U.S. Marshal’s Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force. He was arrested and booked into Smith County Jail on five warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to our news partner KETK, investigators on the scene, after multiple interviews with witnesses, identified Humphrey as the suspected gunman. Police reports say the two girls were passengers in a car with several other juveniles when they were shot. Detectives said the girls were in stable condition.
FLINT — A man was shot by Smith County Sheriff’s deputies early Sunday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers. According to our news partner KETK, the incident happened early Sunday morning in Flint on Highway 69 in a parking lot. At that time a deputy responded to a call of a firearm discharge. They encountered 25-year-old Jackson Lee Davis of Flint. Reports say Davis had a book in one hand and an unidentified object in the other. TYLER – The Tyler Police Department released photos of two men they say robbed two separate Family Dollar stores February 7th. According to our news partner KETK, the two men in the photos, one wearing a black hoodie, the other an orange hoodie, left in a white SUV. Authorities say the men are armed and dangerous. If encountered, call Tyler Police.
LONGVIEW — Longview police are now investigating two weekend shooting deaths. According to our news partner KETK, officers responded to a shooting call on Fourteenth Street on Sunday around 5:45 p.m. 38-year-old Jeremy Willis of Longview was found outside with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. Police say that the motive and circumstances are still under investigation. In the other case, first responders found one victim unconscious on South Twelfth Street early Saturday morning. 27-year-old Deraymond Horton of Longview was taken to a hospital, where he later died. LONGVIEW – The Longview Police Department is on the lookout for a suspect in an aggravated robbery. According to our news partner KETK, It occurred late Saturday morning at The Money Center inside Walmart on Gilmer Road. LPD officers interviewed a cashier who said they were approached by a black man who said wanted money and indicated he had a gun. Officers also obtained photos of the man and the vehicle he drove away in. He’s described as medium height and build, wearing a grey hood, white beanie, white mask, blue jumpsuit and boots. ANDERSON COUNTY – The Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting of an Anderson County man. According to our news partner KETK, Anderson County Sheriff deputies answered a disturbance call late Friday night in rural Anderson county. There officers found 34-year-old Dave Ismaili Gonzales Jr. armed with a gun. He was agitated and confronted deputies. This went on for several minutes, with Gonzales refusing to drop the weapon. When he aimed his gun at deputies, they responded with force fearing for their lives. Gonzales was shot several times. He was then taken to Palestine for immediate medical care, then transferred to a Tyler hospital. Gonzales remains in stable condition.
HENDERSON – The Henderson Police Department was notified of an inappropriate video that had been reported by a student at the Henderson Middle School. According to our news partner KETK, an HPD school detective and resource officer discovered that 18-year-old Dallas Alexander was identified as the suspect. Alexander was arrested on November 16th on warrants for possession with intent to promote child pornography and sexual assault. Alexander posted bond and was released from the Rusk County Jail. The investigation continues and the Henderson Police Department requests that anyone with information to please contact them.
HENDERSON COUNTY – One man was killed and three are in the hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Henderson County. According to our news partner KETK, Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers were called to the crash site near Log Cabin in Henderson County. Officials say Leonardo Losoya of Grand Prairie was driving west in a truck tractor towing a trailer. DPS determined that Losoya veered of the road, went into the ditch then came back onto he westbound lane. When he hit by Joseph Jones of Bullard. He was also towing a trailer with his pickup. The 29-year-old Jones died at the crash site, while his two passengers and Losoya were taken to the hospital in Athens with non-life threatening injuries.
VAN ZANDT COUNTY – A inmate was found unresponsive in his cell and later died after law enforcement attempted life saving measures. That in a statement released by the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office. According to our news partner KETK, Officers found the inmate on Thursday morning Oct. 14th around 9:45 a.m. Emergency personnel arrived and exhausted all efforts to revive him. The inmate was identified as James King and was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities say it appeared King took his own life. Sheriff Steve Hendrix, says his office immediately contacted the Texas Rangers who will conduct an investigation which is routine for deaths while in custody. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards was also notified.
TYLER – Governor Greg Abbott has re-appointed two Tyler residents to the Texas Health Services Authority Board of Directors. According to our new partner KETK they are, Paula Anthony-McMann Ph.D. of Tyler. She is the Chief Strategy officer for UT Health East Texas. Jerome Lisk M.D., of Tyler is a Board Certified Movement Disorder Neurologist at MD Neurology–Denton. The Texas Health Services Authority Board was formed for the purpose of promoting, implementing and facilitating the secure electronic exchange of health information in the State of Texas.
TYLER – On Sunday, Governor Greg Abbott announced that TDEM, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, will partner with local authorities and open a new COVID-19 therapeutic infusion center in Tyler. According to our news partner KETK, the infusion center will begin accepting patients on Tuesday. It will provide Regeneron’s monoclonal antibodies to treat outpatient cases of COVID-19 who have a doctor’s referral. The treatment will be available at no cost.
TYLER – The investigation continues in an early Sunday morning shooting in northern Smith County. According to our news partner KETK, Smith County Sheriff Deputies arrived at the 100 block of Dobbs Terrace, and found 20-year-old Edgar Rios Villanueva with several gunshot wounds to his chest. He went to the hospital and is now listed in stable condition. Deputies are still searching for the suspected shooter, Nonaciano Carreno Hernandez, 43, of Tyler. LONGVIEW – Officials arrest a man in connection with an early Saturday morning fire that damaged two businesses and injured three Longview firefighters. According to our news partner KETK, Longview Fire Marshall Kevin May, said the fire is being investigated as an “intentionally set fire”. May also added that injuries to the firefighters are minor.
LUFKIN – Four murder warrants were issued Friday in Lufkin in connection to the April shooting death of Christopher “Lil Chris†Rogers on April 27th. According to our news partner KETK, Lufkin Police said they have an outstanding warrant. 19 year old Ta’Zyion “Dada†Douglas of Nacogdoches is at large and considered a flight risk. He is a black man is 5’6†and weighs 180 pounds. Authorities ask that if you know the whereabouts of Douglas to please contact them.
TYLER — The countdown to the 2021 Texas Rose Festival is underway following Friday night’s kickoff party. After a year off due to the pandemic, Rose Queen Anna Grace Hallmark is ready to get things going again. She tells KTBB, “I’m so excited to be able to start off again and meet all the new people from out of town and just start off the new year.” As for what makes the Rose Festival so special, Anna says, “I think it brings the community together and gives everyone a chance to come and see what the Rose Festival’s all about.” Read the rest of this entry »
SMITH COUNTY — During a June inspection of the Smith County Jail, a backup emergency system did not work and some required procedures, including providing inmates clean clothes at all times were not followed. According to our news partner KETK, Sheriff Larry Smith said the problems are being addressed. Sheriff Smith said that just before the inspection, the county had replaced a backup generator. But, at the time of the inspection, a minor wiring problem rendered it inoperable. It has since been fixed. He also added, the county has spent the money to buy more jumpsuits, so each inmate has two jumpsuits, so they will have clean clothes at all times. Sheriff Smith said the county is implementing and documenting these corrective measures and will ask the state to re-inspect the jail.
TYLER — There are reports of scammers posing as contractors, stealing thousands of dollars from East Texans looking to get their driveways paved. According to our news partner KETK. They often offer cheap and quick service on the condition that homeowners pay cash and up front. But once they receive money they never do the work. Mechele Mills, CEO and president of BBB in Central East Texas, says people should be careful with whom they hire. She says get a contract and as much information about the company. And for payment, use a credit card, instead of cash. In case of fraud, you’ll have a better chance of getting your money back.
