GRAND SALINE — The Grand Saline Police Department is searching for a missing woman. KETK reports Susan Lynn Young went missing on Sunday, October 18. She was traveling to her parents’ home in Ozark, Alabama, but never arrived. She is approximately 5’1″, 90 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. She was last known to be driving a black 2004 Toyota Scion with Alabama license plates. KILGORE — Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying an armed man who robbed the EZ Mart on Houston Street in Kilgore around 11:00 Sunday night. According to KETK, the robber is described as a black male, possibly early 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall. WOOD COUNTY — A 13-year-old from Alba was killed Sunday night after a truck carrying him and three other Alba residents hit a cow lying in the road north of Mineola. According to KETK, DPS reports the northbound vehicle struck the animal on U.S. 69 and rolled several times around 10:30 p.m. Judd Lyles, one of the passengers, was thrown from the truck and pronounced dead at a Quitman hospital. The driver was identified as Joel Levi Lyles, 18. Other passengers were Jay Lyles, 16, and Colin Lyles 20. Judd and Jay were not wearing seatbelts during the accident. The three survivors were taken to a Tyler hospital. Both Jay and Joel were reported in stable condition. Colin was said to be in serious condition, according to DPS.

TYLER — Due to a drainage culvert washout and a water main break, the 9100 block of Cherokee Trail in Tyler is closed to through traffic. Officials say residents north of the 9100 block will have access from Cumberland Road and residents south of the 9100 block will have access from Centennial Parkway. Repair of the water main begins Tuesday morning. Officials say once water main repairs are complete, the drainage culvert work will begin. They say the street will reopen as soon as all work is complete.

TYLER — Authorities have made an arrest in a recent Tyler robbery. According to a news release, police investigators received information that led to the identification of Ryan Lee Powell, 23, of Tyler. Powell was jailed on an aggravated robbery charge in the October 12 heist at Food Fast on Troup Highway at Willard Drive. According to the clerk, the suspect entered the business around 8 p.m. holding a large kitchen-style knife while demanding money. After taking what police term an undetermined amount cash, the suspect fled westbound on foot.

SMITH COUNTY — The weekend rain flooded numerous roads. According to interim Smith County Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson, County Road 448, on the property of Sky Ranch, was washed out. The road has been barricaded off until it can be repaired. County Road 1104, west of Noonday, in Precinct 1, is closed due to a culvert wash out from the heavy rains. The replacement culvert has to be ordered so it could take two to four weeks before the road is repaired.

TATUM — Tatum Independent School District will start classes at 10:00 this morning due to a power outage. According to KETK, the district says school buses will also run on a two hour delay.

WOOD COUNTY — A high speed chase through East Texas ended in Mineola early Monday morning. According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Department, the chase started Sunday night around 11:30 in Tyler when a Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop. KETK reported, Gregory Tennyson, 40, Tyler, had an outstanding assault warrant and refused to stop. He reportedly led the deputy on a chase into Lindale where police spiked his tires. The chase continued into Mineola where troopers with the Department of Public Safety shot out one of his tires to end the chase. Tennyson rammed four law enforcement vehicles before he was arrested around 1:00 Monday morning. No injuries were reported. Tennyson was booked into the Smith County Jail on several charges, including evading arrest and aggravated assault of a police officer.

RUSK — Hundreds gathered Saturday in the Rusk High School gym for the funeral of Alto High School football player Cam’ron Matthews. KETK reports team members sat at the front proudly wearing their Alto jerseys. Speakers discussed what a blessing Matthews was to the community. At one point, everyone stood and sang the Alto school song. The ceremony called on the community to live up to the legacy Matthews left and to be faithful servants of God. Alto head football coach Paul Gould says Cam’ron’s legacy shined both on and off the field. Gould remarked, “He was a super kid…It’s hard to describe how many good qualities the kid had…great, great character, great role model. TYLER — The Better Business Bureau Serving Central East Texas is requesting nominations for the 2016 BBB Awards for Excellence. BBB says the awards honor businesses and charities that demonstrate superior ethics, reliability, and trustworthiness. Nominations for businesses are due November 20. BECKVILLE — Beckville High School football player Ben Travis is recovering at Parkland Hospital in Dallas after being injured during a game against Shelbyville Friday night. According to KETK, family members say Travis was injured during a play but was able to walk to the sidelines. There he began complaining about being in pain. He was then taken by ambulance to a Longview-area hospital. Family members say doctors discovered his brain was bleeding. Travis was taken to Parkland just after midnight Saturday. He reportedly has suffered short-term memory loss but is expected to be okay. By Sunday morning, Travis was said to be awake and alert, and he’s expected to be able to leave the hospital in the next few days.

LONGVIEW — Longview police are seeking leads after a man in a “scream” costume robbed a local bank Friday afternoon. KETK reports the robber targeted a Capital One Bank on Judson Road near the Hurst Place intersection. The FBI is investigating. The robber, described as a black male, left the location in an older model dark green or black Cadillac Eldorado. The back bumper on the vehicle was either missing or hanging. Anyone with information is asked to call police.

TYLER — Ten Robert E. Lee High School students are in the picture as the USA network sponsors a “Character Quest” campaign in which high schoolers get to share their stories about prejudice or bullying. KETK reports WWE Superstar Mark Henry introduced the students at a school assembly Friday. Robert E. Lee Dean of Curriculum Heather Carnes says the goal of the project was to learn a little more about the people we see every day. Carnes says, “All of these stories centered around a time in their life when they experienced or saw an experience of prejudice or bullying.” This was the first time the USA “Character Project” had ever come to Texas. Sponsors from the project said coming to Texas and working with Lee students was by far one of the best experiences they’ve had in this project.

EAST TEXAS — Rainy weather has forced the postponement of a number of high school football games in the area. According to KETK, the John Tyler game against Corsicana was delayed until 5:00 p.m. today. Major flooding was reported in the Corsicana area, specifically on I-45. Tyler Lee and North Garland will play at 2 p.m. today in Garland. The White Oak-Harmony game was put off until 2 p.m. today in Tatum. Union Grove at Ore City was re-scheduled until 11:00 this morning. Chapel Hill squares off against Kilgore at 5:00 this afternoon. Troup faces Winona at 6:30 this evening. TYLER — Tyler police say numerous traffic lights were knocked out in the area of Bergfeld Park Friday, west of S. Broadway. Power was restored by late afternoon, but with more rough weather on the way, drivers may want to stay on the alert. Police say when such incidents occur, you’re urged to be cautious and treat any intersection as a four-way stop if a traffic light is inoperable there, and if an officer is not present. Police were told that a transformer blew in the area.

TROUP — Legendary Texas high school football coach Dennis Alexander, now the head coach at Troup, has been suspended amid an investigation. According to KETK, Alexander confirmed he was suspended from his coaching duties on Wednesday. He said he was notified someone alleged he slapped a student on Monday. The coach says he believes he “tapped” a student on the back of the head in a meeting on Monday. He denied the allegations. “I have never slapped a kid before,” said Alexander. The coach added he was disappointed about what has happened. Defensive Coordinator John Eastman will be taking over head coaching duties until further notice. Alexander said he will not be coaching until the school district’s investigation is complete and a decision is made. Troup ISD Superintendent Stuart Bird has declined to comment. TYLER — Despite heavy rain in the area, Smith County officials remind you that the county remains under a burn ban. Interim Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson said her office responded to illegal burns across the county Friday, and she’s urging residents not to burn trash, brush, or other items just because the area has seen rain. It will be up to the Smith County Commissioners Court to consider rescinding the burn ban, and the first chance the court will have to discuss that is during its regular meeting on Tuesday. The Commissioners Court voted October 13 to implement the second burn ban of the year in Smith County. Under the burn ban restrictions, barbecue grills can be used for cooking food as long as a lid is used. Fire pits and campfires, however, are prohibited because they are not covered vessels.

TYLER — On Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m., the City of Tyler will be hosting a second Innovation Pipeline and Makerspace Mixer to gather additional community feedback about the new program. GRAND SALINE — The Grand Saline Police Department reports Van Zandt County Constable Precinct 1 Mickey Henson was injured Thursday afternoon when his car was hit by another vehicle allegedly eluding authorities. KETK reports Henson was taken to a hospital to evaluate his injuries. There was no immediate information on his condition or other details.

VAN — Van ISD has delayed class start times until 10:00 today due to power outages. According to KETK, Oncor is reporting at least 1,600 people are without power.

BULLARD — The Smith County Sheriff’s deputies arrest four suspects wanted in the burglary of the Bullard baseball complex. Cody Lee Jordan, 17, and Tyler Wayne Ward (pictured), 17, along with two juveniles, were taken into custody for the October 17th burglary and vandalism at the baseball complex on County Road 173. Officials said a storage room next to the concession stand was broken into and a John Deere Gator Utility vehicle was stolen. The Gator has been recovered but was heavily damaged. Bond for each suspect was set at $5,000.

SMITH COUNTY — A suspect has been taken into custody in a Smith County home burglary. Thursday afternoon around 12:15, deputies responded to a location on County Road 1125 off Highway 64 West. Deputy Jacob Hart was told by the homeowner he believed he knew who had broken into the home. Officials say Hart found the suspect on Sycamore Street as he was attempting to get back to his car. He has been identified as Dan Flournoy, 19, a Smith County resident. Flournoy had allegedly set aside video games and a PlayStation in preparation for taking the property. The residence had also been burglarized Tuesday, and that case is still under investigation. Flournoy was jailed on a charge of burglary of a habitation.

LONGVIEW — A child is hospitalized in Longview after being hit by a vehicle that then took off. KETK reports officers were called around shortly after 5:30 Wednesday afternoon to Pals Parkway, near Lear Park. Police say the vehicle left the scene before officers arrived. Witnesses said the vehicle was a blue passenger car. Police say the car may not have been damaged. The child was taken to a local hospital with what are termed non-life-threatening injuries. LONGVIEW — A Longview High School student was arrested Wednesday after police reportedly found a revolver in his backpack at school, but officials say the student himself informed a teacher about the gun after realizing he was carrying it. KETK reports police were alerted to the case just before 10:15 Wednesday morning. Officers say they were able to locate the student quickly and secure the backpack. TYLER — An official groundbreaking gives the public a look at Tyler’s new animal shelter on Chandler Highway, now under construction and set for completion next August. City Councilmember Don Warren says the new shelter will be great, but it’s about a lot more than a physical plant. He says it’s important to take care of animals and visit with citizens about best practices for pet ownership. Since ending its contract with the troubled Klein shelter in Jacksonville, Tyler’s been using a facility on Grande Boulevard. Warren says that facility is proving to be a great springboard for the new one. He cites 350 animals taken by nonprofits, 200 adopted, and 250 reclaimed by owners. LONGVIEW — A 61-year-old man has been shot and killed in Gregg County. Details are limited, but witnesses say the shooting stemmed from an altercation. The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched around 10:24 Wednesday night to a residence in the area of Goforth Road and FM 3053 in the Liberty City area. Deputies arrived to find Paul Ray Jackson lying on the ground outside the residence. Officials say the incident is still actively being investigated, and they’re asking anyone with information to contact Investigator Falco at (903) 236-8438 or Crime Stoppers at (903) 236-STOP.

LONGVIEW — Three people have been arrested for a Longview concession stand burglary. Longview police say officers were dispatched shortly before 12:45 Wednesday morning to a commercial burglary in progress on Spring Hill Road between Panther Street and Spring Hill Parkway. Officers were told that the reporting party was watching the burglary as it occurred from an offsite video camera system. NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches Police have made an arrest in a felony hit-and-run accident last Saturday night. According to KETK, Christian Michael Gill, 20, Nacogdoches, was arrested this morning. Just after 10:00 on October 17th, authorities received a report of a pedestrian in the roadway. Witnesses said the teenage victim was crossing the street to go to the homecoming dance at the high school when he was struck. The 16-year-old victim suffered head trauma and internal bleeding. He remains hospitalized.

TYLER — A driver is being investigated following an accident that injured 5 persons and damaged several vehicles. The accident occurred shortly before 10:30 Wednesday night at South Broadway and Loop 323. Witnesses tell Tyler police a man was driving recklessly when he came to the intersection and hit a vehicle which then hit two more vehicles. He is being investigated for driving while intoxicated. The injured were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

TYLER — Smith County has its first female fire marshal. Named to the post is Connie McCoy-Wasson. She has worked for the county for 22 years. Wasson told KETK, “I’m overwhelmed with the support that I’ve had. That has just been amazing to me.” She will fill the post being vacated by Jay Brooks who announced last week he was stepping down.
