WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tyler Congressman Louie Gohmert joins other conservative lawmkers at a Washington news conference on their continuing bid to de-fund Obamacare. Gohmert says the de-funding effort is not about politics, and that the Affordable Care Act will actually hurt the people it’s supposedly designed to help. Gohmert remarked, “We’re standing for the people, and I hope the President understands that and eventually, if we stand strongly enough, comes around and starts standing for the people instead of his party.”

LINDALE — A Smith County deputy was involved in an accident Thursday afternoon on Highway 69 North, just south of Faulkner Park in Lindale. KETK reports that according to officials, the deputy was trying to cross the southbound lanes of the highway when he t-boned a white truck carrying multiple passengers. The truck flipped over into a ditch, but only minor injuries were reported. Traffic was shut down in the southbound lanes of Highway 69 for a time before the accident was cleared.

NACOGDOCHES — A Nacogdoches man has been arrested after police were called to an aggravated robbery. KETK reports William Fincher, 29, was arrested Thursday morning after a complaint by his 69-year-old dad, who lives in the 300 block of Cooper Street. According to the complaint, the dad was approached at gunpoint, and his hands and legs were tied together. LONGVIEW — A $58.9 million Gregg County budget proposal for the coming fiscal year includes a $2.5 million commitment to building a new animal shelter in partnership with the city of Longview. KETK and the Longview News-Journal report County Judge Bill Stoudt filed his spending proposal with County Clerk Connie Wade on Thursday. The document seeks the same, 26¼-cent tax rate property owners shouldered this year. It also adds no county debt while still laying out about $14 million for large projects such as the proposed animal center. The day-to-day operations budget is proposed at $47.4 million, and is separate from the capital projects budget that is fed by reserves. LONGVIEW – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott recognized Tracy Fleck, an assistant attorney general in the Child Support Division’s Longview office, for her commitment to Texas children. Fleck (at left in picture) was named “Assistant Attorney General of the Year” for the Child Support Division’s Tyler region, which covers 43 counties. TYLER — The Tyler Police Department gets a new assistant police chief. In a ceremony Thursday afternoon, Chief Gary Swindle promoted Lieutenant Jimmy Toler to Assistant Chief. EAST TEXAS — Consumers Report has done a study on hospitals’ morbidity rates. The study was for Medicare patients 65 and older who had a longer hospital stay than was anticipated. The probe for Medicare claims from 2009 to 2011 was for patients who had surgery in 27 categories of commonly scheduled surgeries. According to KETK, Scoring better were Trinity Mother Frances and Texas Spine and Joint, of Tyler, and Good Shepherd Medical Center and Longview Regional in Longview. East Texas Medical Center in Tyler and Memorial Medical Center in Lufkin did worse than previous reports.

KILGORE — Kilgore Police are investigating an aggravated assault and a possible attempted sexual assault. KETK reports it happened Saturday morning. Police were called for a victim suffering from several injuries. The victim had reported that she was walking on State Highway 42 sometime between 2:00 and 3:00am when she was offered a ride by several males in a 4-door pickup. She reported that the men displayed at least one weapon and attempted to sexually assault her. The victim said she fought with her attackers and told police that led to the additional injuries. LONGVIEW — An accused killer has been transferred to East Texas after being found out of state. KETK and the Longview News-Journal report that Paul Anthony Mengel has been placed in the Gregg County Jail under $500,000 bond on a charge of murder. Mengel was moved from a jail in Louisiana after being captured there last week. Mengel, 27, was arrested July 23 at his Bossier City home on a warrant issued by Longview police in connection with the fatal shooting of Joey Lee Espy. Espy, 19, was found shot to death July 7 at a house in the 300 block of Bonner Street in South Longview after a woman called 911 saying she and her boyfriend had been shot. TYLER — Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham has made a formal presentation of two K9s to Sheriff Larry Smith for use by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. It happened at a news conference Wednesday at the Smith County Emergency Operations Center on Spur 248. The animals were purchased earlier this year for $11,500 each and are now trained and on the streets. They’re trained to track people and sniff out drugs, and for use during patrol. TYLER — The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Public Safety have arrested a Tyler doctor and his assistant at a building that was formerly occupied by Pierce Primary Care Associates. KETK reports Dr. Gregory Terrell, 53, and his office manager, Melissa York, 48, were both arrested on Wednesday for possession of a controlled substance by fraud as well as diversion of a controlled substance by registrants. CANTON — A Van Zandt County grand jury has indicted the uncle of a Greenville teenager who was murdered in November. The single-count indictment accuses Michael Moore, 57, of capital murder in the November 2 death of his niece, Alicia. Her body was found stuffed in a wicker trunk in rural Van Zandt County. Last May from jail, Moore said he had nothing to do with her murder. He asked, “Who’s gonna believe me over the U.S. Marshals and the FBI and whatever?…If my DNA’s on her body, they put it there.” He said he was trying to help Alicia, who he claimed had sexual problems. He is being held on $10 million bond.

TYLER — The 20 year-old woman who was shot in P.T. Cole Park in Tyler around 9:40 Tuesday night is identified as Briana Raquel Young, 20, of Tyler. Young was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Quincy Beavers, and her body was sent to Southwest Forensics in Dallas for an autopsy. Tyler Investigators have determined that Young had brought her 3 year-old son to the park. While in the park, Young was caught in cross-fire when gunfire erupted. Investigators were told that gunfire erupted from within the park and also from a vehicle on Mockingbird Street next to the park. Around 30 people were in the park when the shooting occurred. NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches County authorities are looking for a man they believe is connected to multiple burglaries in the area. According to KETK, the suspected burglar is Jeffrey Holliman, 50, who officials say may be armed and dangerous. Holliman is described as a “survivalist” who has allegedly been squatting in abandoned houses and in make-shift shelters. He has stolen weapons, clothes, money, survival equipment, and large quantities of food from local houses and vehicles, according to authorities. TYLER — The Fair Plaza Garage construction schedule in downtown Tyler calls for fencing to be erected around the project site in early to mid-August. To address the need for temporary parking, a lot across from City Hall has been designated and a free shuttle service will be provided. Beginning Thursday the shuttle service will run between the parking lot across from City Hall on North Bonner Avenue and West Ferguson Street through the downtown area. City officials say the round trip route should take less than 10 minutes, depending on traffic and ridership. This service will initially run 12 hours a day, Monday through Friday (except holidays), from 6:00am to 6:00pm. This will be a pilot program, with hours of operation subject to change depending on the level of ridership.

NACOGDOCHES — A Nacogdoches club owner has been arrested for dug violations. James Grigsby, 45, is the owner and operator of club, Metro, on Farm Road 225. He was taken into custody after Nacogdoches County officers found a large amount of cocaine, crack cocaine and codeine at his residence and nightclub. Sheriff Jason Bridges tells KETK they had an ongoing investigation into drug distribution by the suspect. The sheriff said that the investigation revealed that Grigsby had just transported a large load of cocaine into Nacogdoches County and was storing it at stash house in Nacogdoches.

ATHENS — In just over 4 month, some Henderson County residents will be voting on a local option liquor issue. Henderson County Commissioners yesterday approved the petition submitted by Texas Petition Strategies for a local option election in J.P. Precinct 3. The precinct is in the northeast section of Henderson County. Voters will be asked to approve sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption only. The issue will go before voters on November 5th.

LONGVIEW — Gregg County authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who walked out of a local business without paying for several items. KETK reports that on May 9, an unknown white man walked into Home Depot and picked up a few goods. After walking through the front door, store management approached the man. At that time, the alleged thief told workers not to stop him, rather call the police. The man is believed to have left the scene in a newer model gold F-150 2-door truck. LONGVIEW — An Ore City woman has been taken into custody on a forgery charge. Monday afternoon a little after 4:45, Longview Police officers were dispatched to an alleged forgery in progress in the 700 block of West Marshall Avenue. When officers arrived, they were told a woman later identified as Dacquri R. Wright 20, had attempted to pay for her fast food order with a counterfeit $100 bill. Police located Wright in the drive-thru of the restaurant. Wright was arrested for third degree felony forgery and transported to the Gregg County Jail without incident.

LONGVIEW — Longview police have taken three men into custody for vehicle burglary, and one faces a drug charge. Monday morning just before 4:15, Longview Police Officers were dispatched to the 2400 Block of South High Street for suspicious activity. Officers were told by the victim that while he was watching live surveillance video, he observed three people breaking into vehicles on his property. KAUFMAN (AP) – An appeals court has upheld the theft conviction of the suspected shooter in the slayings of three people, including two North Texas prosecutors. The 5th Texas Court of Appeals on Monday affirmed the trial judgment against Eric Williams, now imprisoned for the killings of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, his wife, Cynthia, and fellow prosecutor Mark Hasse. Authorities believe Williams carried out the killings to avenge the former justice of the peace’s conviction last year on theft charges, over computer monitors taken from a county building. McLelland and Hasse prosecuted the case against him. Williams had appealed the conviction. It was pending when Hasse was killed in January and the McLellands were fatally shot in March. Authorities have said they’ll seek the death penalty against Williams.

GREGG COUNTY — A Longview woman accused of scheming to steal a baby by killing a mother with a newborn or one who was in late-term pregnancy has been ruled mentally competent to stand trial. According to the Longview News-Journal, Tanya Lynette Bradley, 30, was arrested in June 2012 after her friends told police Bradley was lying in wait for a mother outside Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. After a two-hour examination of Bradley conducted July 14, a forensic psychiatrist ruled Bradley is competent to stand trial for the charge of criminal attempt to commit capital murder. Bradley has been held in the Gregg County Jail since her arrest June 30, 2012 under bonds totaling $500,000. A trial date has been set for August 19.

JACKSONVILLE — Cherokee County authorities have arrested a suspect in a store burglary. It happened just before 2:00 Saturday morning at The Corner Store, located at the intersection of Farm Road 747 and County Road 3119 near Lake Jacksonville. Responding to an alarm, deputies found the front door glass to the store had been shattered. Investigators discovered that the suspect ran into the door and had possibly suffered a cut to his head or face when leaving through the shattered glass door. DNA was collected at the scene. GARLAND (AP/STAFF) — North Texas police say a shoplifting suspect who was fatally shot by an off-duty officer was previously involved in a carjacking that left an 82-year-old Henderson County woman injured. Garland police say that Casey Daniel Smith, 31, of Kemp was killed when he threatened the officer with a crowbar. The officer was working security at a Wal-Mart store in Garland, northeast of Dallas. TYLER — The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting applications for drought relief and continuing emergency farm loans. Smith County farm loan manager Joseph Grier asks farmers who want to apply for emergency loans to submit their applications as soon as possible. The deadline for application is February 26, 2014, but Grier says if farmers wait too long, a backlog will develop and cause delays. Generally, farmers who have lost 30 percent of their production or any physical loss due to drought are eligible for the emergency loans. The FSA office is located at 4209 Republic Drive in Tyler.

LONGVIEW — Sheriff Maxey Cerliano and the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office request assistance in identifying a possible suspect in a vehicle burglary and credit card abuse case. On July 3rd, Deputies responded to an address on Airline Road for a burglary of a vehicle case. The victim reported that during the previous night, an unknown suspect or suspects entered his vehicle by breaking a window. MARSHALL — A 30-year-old Marshall man has been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of his 7-month-old child. That’s the report from KETK and the Longview News-Journal. Jayson Jones was arrested July 9 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, and was taken Friday to the Harrison County Jail, according to a release from the Marshall Police Department. Police said the 7-month-old was taken unresponsive to the emergency room at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Marshall on July 14, 2012. Medical personnel were unable to resuscitate the child. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Westy Meisenheimer pronounced the infant dead and ordered an autopsy. The infant’s death was ruled a homicide. TYLER — Crews have discovered the cause of a sinkhole that created some problems last week at Broadway and Front in Tyler, and they’re gearing up for repairs the second weekend in August. TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz tells KETK the cave-in began with a clay storm drainpipe that was likely installed during or right after World War II. According to Krantz, concrete was difficult to obtain during that period. SMITH COUNTY — A Smith County man crashed his vehicle into a house Saturday afternoon. KETK reports it happened around 5, just off Highway 64, just east of County Road 293. The driver, Matt King, says his tire blew out, causing him to run off the highway and crash into the house. Smith County troopers say the house was abandoned.
