Jury finds Tyler man guilty of murder in 2017 shootingTYLER — A jury has sentenced Martin Reynolds to 16 years in prison for the murder of Andrew Carpenter after more than 4 hours of deliberations. The prosecution had requested 40 years while the defense asked for 10. He’ll get 4 years time served for the time he was waiting for his trial and be eligible for parole in 2025. The latest he will be out is 2033. He was charged after shooting Carpenter in November 2017. Sheriff: 1 person reported dead, potential hostage situation in Anderson CountyANDERSON COUNTY — One person has been arrested following a murder and hostage situation Thursday morning in the Frankston area. According to our news partner KETK, Anderson County Sheriff Rudy Flores says a call came in to deputies around 1:30 a.m. from a neighbor on FM 309 reporting multiple gunshots. Deputies responded and found a dead male on the front porch of the residence who appeared to have died from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Marco Matthew Gonzales. Man turns himself in after fatal hit-and-run crashLUFKIN — A Lufkin man turned himself in on Wednesday in connection with the hit-and-run fatal crash that happened on Sunday morning. 53-year-old Gabriel Garcia, of Lufkin, was killed in the wreck. According to our news partner KETK, the driver is identified as Roberto Carlos Guerrero, 32. The Lufkin Police Department was contacted by Guerrero’s attorney earlier this week, notifying them that Guerrero would turn himself in to the Angelina County Jail once the department had a warrant for his arrest. Sheriff: Teen injured after ‘accidental shooting’ by 10-year-old family memberNACOGDOCHES COUNTY — A 13-year-old boy was injured after being shot in the face over the weekend by a 10-year-old family member. According to our news partner KETK, the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting that happened off of State Highway 21 W. Deputies said the boy was injured after the 10-year-old picked up a .380 semi-automatic handgun that had been left unattended. While playing with the gun in a back bedroom, the 10-year-old unintentionally discharged the gun, hitting the 13-year-old in the cheek, deputies said. The bullet exited the victim beneath the ear. Nacogdoches police officer arrested for DWINACOGDOCHES COUNTY — An off-duty Nacogdoches police officer was arrested by Texas DPS for driving while intoxicated on Sunday morning. According to our news partner KETK, Daniel Aburto, 30, was arrested Sunday morning around 7:45 a.m. after Nacogdoches Combined Communications Center received a call of a person asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle in Douglass, blocking the road. Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Deputies were the first to arrive, followed by Texas DPS. They learned that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was an off-duty Nacogdoches Police Officer. Aburto was booked into the Nacogdoches County Law Enforcement Center on a single charge of DWI and was placed on suspension until the completion of an internal investigation.

Man allegedly shoots neighbor in Van Zandt CountyBEN WHEELER — On Monday, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s deputies responded to call about a shooting on VZ CR 4814 in the Ben Wheeler area of Van Zandt County. According to our news partner KETK, when deputies arrived on the scene, they met with a witness who then told them that a male victim had been shot by a neighbor, said the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office. Upon further investigation, a suspect was identified as Shane David Baronet. The deputies later located and arrested Baronet while the victim was flown by helicopter to a Tyler hospital. The victim’s condition is currently described as extremely critical, said the sheriff’s office. Baronet is being held on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with a bond set at $150,000.

Pedestrian killed after being hit by car on Troup HighwayTYLER — A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday. According to our news partner KETK, Tyler police received a call about the incident around 6:30 p.m. The pedestrian reportedly left Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Troup Highway and was attempting to cross the roadway, not in a designated crossing area, and was hit by a car in the northbound outside lane. The pedestrian has been identified as Malcolm Johnson, 35, from Tyler. He was transported to UT Health on Beckham by EMS where he died from his injuries. No charges are pending for the driver of the vehicle.

Robinson will also light the city’s Christmas tree on Thursday Dec. 2 at the T.B. Butler Foundation Plaza in downtown. Two men arrested for Marshall shooting that injured six peopleMARSHALL — Two Marshall men are behind bars in connection with a shooting that left six people injured. Just after 2 a.m. on Nov. 6, police responded to reports of multiple shots fired on South Alamo Blvd. More than 200 people were believed to be on-scene when the shooting started. The two suspects have been identified as Brandon Bernard Richardson, 30 and Raphael Perignon Hendrix, 31. Four of the victims were hospitalized after the shooting, including one that was flown to Tyler in critical condition. Richardson was detained shortly after the shooting. Hendrix turned himself in on Monday. Richardson was charged with deadly conduct and interfering with public duties while Hendrix has been charged with six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

United Way of Smith County raised over $200,000 for Giving Tuesday

United Way of Smith County raised over 0,000 for Giving TuesdayTYLER — The United Way of Smith County hosted their second annual “Tyler Gives” online fundraiser on Nov. 30, which fell on International Giving Tuesday. According to our news partner KETK, the event was aimed at meeting local needs for the organizations 26 non-profit partners as a gift for the end of the year. More than 550 individuals came together last year and raised over $168,000 online in a matter of hours. This year, they raised over $200,000. United Way and Tyler Gives sponsors, Express Employment Professionals and Specialized Recruiting Group, are providing a $75,000 match this year. Last year, they matched the first $50,000 given, which they reached only 13 minutes after the donation went live. This year, they reached $75,000 within 6 minutes of the donation portal opening. Man arrested following carjacking, high-speed chase

Sheriff: Man arrested, led East Texas law enforcement on high-speed chase after stealing car at gunpointVAN ZANDT COUNTY — Authorities said a man led them on a high-speed chase from East Texas to Dallas after he allegedly stole a car at gunpoint in Van Zandt County. According to our news partner KETK, Tommy McArthur Jones III was arrested on Monday. The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call about the carjacking at the Loves Truck Stop in Van around 11:30 a.m. Law enforcement responded and set up multiple units along I-20 westbound to find the stolen vehicle, which was a 2020 white Nissan Sentra. A sheriff’s deputy and Precinct 4 Constable found the vehicle and began following it. They attempted to stop the car, but Jones drove faster to avoid apprehension, said the sheriff’s office. Longview police investigate sports bar shootingLONGVIEW — Longview police are investigating a shooting at a sports bar that left one person injured. According to our news partner KETK, on Saturday, around 11:15 p.m. Longview police responded to a shooting at the Lodge Sports Bar & Billiards located at 501 N. Spur 63. When officers arrived, they located one adult victim inside with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The gunman ran away before the police arrived. The Longview police department said that this is an active investigation with detectives still gathering information.
