CANTON – Van Zandt County authorities have seized 87 animals from some property near Canton where they found 50 dead horses. According to the SPCA of Texas, the animals consist of 70 horses, 9 donkeys, 6 pigs and 1 longhorn. More than half of the horses, the donkeys and the longhorn were roaming on a large, fenced pasture on the property. They had no access to food and little to no access to water. The other horses were confined to two smaller pastures on the property with no access to food and minimal water. They said the horses were so desperate for food that they were eating the bark off of the trees, leaving some trees completely bare. The pigs were confined to a small wire pen with no access to food. The animals, which were seized on Tuesday, will be examined by medical staff and cared for until a custody hearing takes place. That is scheduled to be held in Canton on April 19th.
Tyler Nurse Charged With Murder
TYLER – A former nurse at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital’s Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital in Tyler remains in jail on a murder charge. Arrested in the lobby of the Tyler Police Department Tuesday night was William George Davis, 34, of Hallsville. Davis is said to have entered a patient’s room and performed an “unskilled and/or unnecessary and/or inappropriate intervention.†His actions are said to have caused the patient to have a stroke which led to their death. Pine Tree Student Found With Gun
TYLER – A gun has been found on a Longview school campus. The handgun was discovered around 10:00 Wednesday morning in the possession of a Pine Tree middle school student. The gun was not loaded. District officials say the campuses did not go into lockdown and there was no threat to their students at any time. According to a statement released by the district, the district’s safety plan was followed and the student was removed from the campus.
Sales Tax Allocation Checks are in the Mail
AUSTIN – Tyler and Longview’s sales tax allocation continues to run ahead of last year’s numbers. The State comptroller is sending out $651 million in local sales tax allocations for April. That is 5% more than in April last year. These allocations are based on sales made in February. Tyler’s allocation tops $3 million. That is nearly 3% more than last April. For the year Tyler’s allocation exceeds $14million, which is up nearly 5%. Longview’s April allocation is $2.3 million. That’s an over 5% increase. For the year, Longview’s checks top over $10.5 million. That’s an increase of nearly 8%.
KC Business Department Redesigns Curriculum
KILGORE — Kilgore College’s Business Department has redesigned its curriculum. Officials say the move will streamline offerings, make the curriculum more student-friendly, and ensure its students are prepared to excel in today’s businesses and industries. The department previously offered 13 awards in accounting, management, and business. The new curriculum will consist of four awards — two degrees and two certificates. According to a news release, the Accounting Program has been strengthened to provide students with a more focused approach to the associate of applied science degree and certificate of completion. The Management Program has been combined with the Business Program and is now called the Business Management Program. Business Management will consist of an associate of applied science degree and a certificate of completion.
Henderson County Authorities Seek Would-Be Robber
POYNOR – Henderson County authorities are seeking a man in connection with an altercation at a store near Poynor. Sheriff Botie Hillhouse told our news partner KETK that his department received a call from the store about 4 p.m. Tuesday. The caller said a black male had come into the store, tried to rob it, and gotten into an altercation with the clerk. Hillhouse said the man didn’t get anything, that no one was injured, and that the would-be robber left. He is described as about 5’8″, with dreadlocks, and wearing a black hoodie.
Tyler Nurse Charged with Murder
SMITH COUNTY — William George Davis, 34, was booked into the Smith County Jail Tuesday on a murder charge. His bond was set at $2 million. Davis is also being investigated by the Texas Board of Nursing. According to KTBB’s news partner, KETK, in an order of temporary suspension, the board alleges that on August 4, 2017, while a registered nurse at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital’s Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital, Davis entered a patient’s room and performed an “unskilled and/or unnecessary and/or inappropriate intervention.” The suspension order states that the patient “deteriorated from their stable condition and a stroke code was issued.” The stroke “ultimately contributed to the patient’s demise” on Aug. 6. Man Accused of Attacking a Deputy Sheriff
QUITMAN – An Alba man is in the Wood County Jail, accused of attacking a deputy sheriff. Arrested was David Doyle McCarmack. On his Face Book page, Sheriff Tom Castloo said he wanted to thank state troopers, Alba police and sheriff’s deputies for the arrest. Details surrounding the attack have not been made available.
More Charges Filed in Smith County Gambling Raids
TYLER – The owners of two suspected Smith County illegal gambling businesses have been arrested on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity. Salim Abdul Hussain, 65, and Dilshad Ali, 58, both of Tyler, were free on bond when they were arrested on Monday. The two own stores on Highway 64 West that were raided in early February. They were charged with keeping a gambling place, gambling promotion, and possession of gambling devices and equipment. Deputies seized 11 gaming machines and money. Fatal Wreck in Rusk County
MT. ENTERPRISE – One person has been killed in a fatal accident in Rusk County. It happened just before 2:30 Monday afternoon on State Highway 135, six miles northeast of Mt. Enterprise. Killed was Ashlen Kyndal Branton, 19, of Nacogdoches. The Department of Public Safety reported her car drifted across the center stripe and hit an oversized load being carried on multiple trailers being pulled by a Peterbilt truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck’s driver was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
Suspect Sought in Fatal East Texas Wreck
WASKOM – Authorities are looking for a suspect in a fatal hit and run accident in Harrison County. The accident happened around 8:30 Sunday night on Farm Road 9, about 12 miles north of Waskom. Killed when his dirt bike was hit by a car was Nolan Leo Majeski, 32, of Winthrop, Minnesota. The car’s driver fled the scene. The car was later found abandoned. They are now working on identifying and finding the driver.
Wanted Felon Arrested Following High-Speed Chase
HENDERSON COUNTY — A wanted man has been arrested following a high-speed chase Monday night. According to the Henderson County Sheriff, Chance Pratt, 30, of Kemp, has been charged with evading arrest with a previous conviction, unlawful possession of a weapon and felony pardon and parole violation. The pursuit began around 8:30 after a deputy spotted a vehicle the suspect was known to drive in the Seven Points area. After reaching speeds of over 100 mph, Pratt eventually left the vehicle and began running toward homes in a neighborhood. He surrendered a short time later.
Suspects Strangled, Set Fire to Body of Longview Woman
EAST TEXAS — A Longview woman found dead in Upshur County apparently knew the couple charged in her murder. According to the Longview News-Journal and our news partner KETK, Lindsey Jo McFadden, 29, of Longview and Carlton Lamar Grant, 37, of the Dallas area were charged with capital murder in the death of Rachel Rhoads, 24. McFadden and Rhoads were said to be friends who attended drug rehab classes together. McFadden told investigators that the three of them had left Rhoads’ apartment March 29 in Rhoads’ car. Search Warrant Leads to Two Arrests
HENDERSON COUNTY — A suspected Henderson County drug dealer is arrested. 47-year-old Jarrod Barton is charged with selling meth. He was arrested after officials served a search warrant at a mechanic shop in the Lake Palestine area. Along with the meth, deputies found a Harley Davidson motorcycle reported stolen in 2015 from the Texas Panhandle. Charges for possession of the stolen motorcycle are pending. Miranda Roberts, 35, was also arrested for an outstanding warrant out of Nueces County for possession of a dangerous drug.

TYLER – You have four weeks to go in Smith County’s bi-annual cleanup program. Smith County residents can use vouchers to redeem at the landfill on the Old Kilgore Highway. The vouchers are available at the courthouse annex and all JP and constables’ offices. You can take 3 cubic yards of solid waste, which fills the bed of a regular sized pickup, and bulk items to the landfill. Then, the last week of the month, Tyler is having its free bulky item collection. This is where the city picks up large bulky items you put on the curb. Such things as furniture, appliances and large items that would normally require a special fee. Great help with your spring cleaning.
Lindale Theft Suspect
LINDALE – Lindale police are asking the public’s help in identifying a theft suspect. She is said to have stolen some items from Walmart, some of which have been recovered. She was an in a dark colored, possibly Maroon or black 4 door passenger car. If you know her, you are asked to contact detectives Curtis Philpot or Chris Dworaczyk at 903-882-3313.
Suspect Jailed in Fatal East Texas Shooting
UNCERTAIN – One person has been arrested following a weekend shooting in Harrison County that left one dead and one injured. The shooting occurred late Sunday morning at a motel in Uncertain, which is located northeast of Marshall. Dead at the scene was Michael Campbell, 47, of Houston. Airlifted to a Shreveport hospital for a gunshot wounds to the stomach was Dianna Clevenger, 48, of Cabot, Arkansas.She said her husband Michael Clevenger, 50, was responsible for the shooting. His pickup was stopped in Atlanta after a short chase with Cass County deputies.
Longview Man Faces Charges in Fatal Accident
LONGVIEW – A Longview man is charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault following a late Sunday night accident. According to our news partner KETK, Longview police say 46-year-old Christopher Roman Darden was traveling north on Eastman Road near the East Marshall Avenue intersection when he veered into oncoming traffic and struck a southbound vehicle head-on. The driver, Gloria Guillermo Arrerola, was killed, and her passenger, Joselyn Esparza, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Darden was released from a hospital and jailed around 4:10 Monday morning. No bond was immediately set. Darden has a lengthy criminal history dating to 1995.
Farmers Market Kicks Off First Season at New Location
TYLER — This past weekend was the first of the season for the Rose City Farmers Market. According to our news partner KETK, it opened in downtown Tyler across from the Off Square Downtown shopping center. The market is within walking distance of the square and the Azalea District. The past three years, it’s been operating at Juls, which has since converted from a restaurant to an events venue. Now organizers say they hope to reach more people in the new location.
Clements Donates $45,000 to Endow Three Scholarships at KC
KILGORE — Kilgore College alumnus Mike Clements, owner of Energy Weldfab, is continuing his philanthropy with a $45,000 donation. The money will endow three Culinary Arts student scholarships at KC in memory of Clements’s late wife, Amy. The Culinary Arts program began at KC in 2012. According to a news release, it prepares students for careers in the nation’s second-largest private sector business –- food service. The program offers two certificates and an associate of applied science degree. Scholarships endowed by Clements will benefit Culinary Arts students each year.
UT Tyler Announces Scholarships for History Majors
TYLER — The University of Texas at Tyler Department of History announces its 2018 scholarships that recognize outstanding academic success among UT Tyler history majors. According to a news release, this year’s Edwin Morgan and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholar is Jeanna Mankins, and the Phil Stacy Jackson History Scholar is Taylor Foster. Mankins and Foster, both of Tyler, received $750 and $500, respectively.

TYLER – Here’s a look at work planned in TxDOT’S Tyler District during the week of April 9. Tyler Maintenance plans to conduct overlay operations on FM 1252 from FM 757 eastward for about two miles. A second crew will be performing pavement repairs on SH 64E just west of Arp. Longview Maintenance plans to continue mill and inlay hot mix asphalt operations on SH 31 from BU 259/FM 349 toward I-20. Tyler Fire Department Holds Awards Banquet
TYLER — The Tyler Fire Department handed out numerous honors during its 27th Annual Awards Banquet Saturday at the Tyler Rose Garden Center. Jim Mullicane (pictured with Fire Chief David Coble) was honored as Firefighter of the Year. The Chief’s Certificate of Valor went to firefighter Clint Herron, and firefighter Robby Roberson won the Life Saving Award. The District 2 C-Shift earned the Outstanding District Award, and several retirees were recognized for their long tours of duty with the fire department. Other honors were given for customer service and teamwork. The department also recognized personnel who have been promoted over the past year.
Gambling Charges Against a Tyler Woman
TYLER – Smith County authorities have arrested a woman on gambling violations. In the Smith County Jail under a $100,000 bond is Monica Prado, 39, of Tyler. She is charged with gambling promotion and possession of gambling device/equipment/paraphernalia. Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Darrell Coslin tells KTBB, she was arrested on Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation from November 2017. It involves a location on Highway 64 East. Detectives discovered that the location was operating as an illegal gaming room. And Sgt Coslin says the investigation is continuing.

Two Charged in Longview Woman’s Death
GILMER – Two persons have been charged with capital murder in the death of a Longview woman, whose body was found last Sunday. At a news conference Friday afternoon, Upshur County sheriff Larry Webb announced Lindsey McFadden, 29, of Longview and Carlton Grant, 37, from the Metroplex, have been charged with the death of Rachel Rhoads, 24. She was reported missing March 31st. Her body was found a day later off Farm Road 726, just north of Highway 154 in Upshur County. Officials say they can’t discuss the autopsy results because of a gag order in the case. They did say, they filed capital murder charges in the case because Rhoads was killed as she was being kidnapped.
Big Sandy the Latest to Experience a School Threat
BIG SANDY – A shelter in place alert has been lifted in the Big Sandy school district. It was issued Friday morning following a threat made on social media. The school district said on its Facebook page, treating the threat very seriously, all students were kept in their first period classes as a safety precaution. When they felt confident that there was no threat at the school, the shelter in place alert was lifted early in the second period. No word on what type of threat was made.
Teen’s Body Pulled from Lake Following Rescue Attempt
HENDERSON — Henderson officials have pulled the body of 17-year-old Carlisle High School student Jonathan Cano from a lake after he reportedly tried to help a person in distress. According to KETK, police say the teen died at Lake Forest Park on Highway 64 near the Henderson Police Department. Police say they were called around 7:10 Thursday evening to the park’s gazebo after reports of a possible drowning. The body was recovered around 8:40 p.m. Authorities say two fishermen were able to save the other person. The Carlisle ISD is offering its condolences. School officials added that counselors would be available beginning Friday and in coming days to students and staff who need to deal with their grief.
Suspect Wanted for Aggravated Assault
TYLER — The Smith County Sheriff’s Office seeks a suspect in a predawn March 25 attack at a home on County Road 192 near the Hayes soccer fields. Deputies say a woman suffering from multiple injuries told them 24-year-old Michael Xavier Medlock had entered the residence while she was asleep. She said he put his hands around her neck and began choking her, pulling her back as she tried to escape through a window. She said Medlock took off after he saw a large amount of blood coming from her arm. The woman was taken to a hospital. An arrest warrant obtained Thursday charges Medlock with aggravated assault; bond is $200,000. Authorites believe Medlcok is in the Tyler area. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact Det. Hill at 903- 590-2720.
