Schumer announces he’ll vote to keep government open, likely avoiding shutdown

(Tim Graham/Getty Images)

(WASHINGTON) -- Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced Thursday night that he plans to vote to keep the government open, signaling that there will almost certainly be enough Democratic votes to advance a House GOP funding bill before a shutdown deadline at the end of the day Friday.

In remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer conceded a government shutdown is the worse outcome.

"While the Republican bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much much worse. For sure, the Republican bill is a terrible option," he said. "It is not a clean CR" or continuing resolution, he said. "It is deeply partisan. It doesn't address far too many of this country's needs, but I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power in a government shutdown is a far worse option."

Schumer's announcement amounted to a major break from House Democrats who voted nearly unanimously against the GOP funding bill earlier this week. Following Schumer's remarks, top House Democrats released a joint statement reiterating that they remain "strongly opposed" to the GOP funding bill and say instead they support a four-week spending bill that would allow lawmakers to continue negotiating.

In his remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer argued Republicans are to blame for a "Hobson's choice" that "brought us to the brink of disaster."

"Unless Congress acts, the federal government will shut down tomorrow at midnight. I have said many times there are no winners in a government shutdown. But there are certainly victims: the most vulnerable Americans who rely on federal programs to feed their families to access medical care and to stay financially afloat," Schumer said.

A decision to shut down the government would give President Donald Donald Trump and his senior adviser Elon Musk too much power to continue their federal worker cuts without discretion, he asserted.

"A shutdown would give Donald Trump and Elon musk carte blanche to destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now. Under as shutdown the Trump administration would have full authority to deem whole agencies programs an personnel nonessential, furloughing staff with no promise they would ever be rehired," Schumer said. "In short: a shut down would give Donald Trump Elon musk and DOGE the keys to the city state and country."

Earlier Thursday, Schumer told his Democratic colleagues during a closed-door lunch that he would vote to clear a path for final passage of a House-GOP funding bill, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

That move would clear the way for Republicans to pass the bill with a simple majority.

Senate Democrats remained tight-lipped after huddling behind closed doors ahead of the fast-approaching government funding deadline.

"What happens in caucus, stays in caucus," Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin said as she left the weekly lunch.

"Ask somebody else," Democratic Sen. Cory Booker grumbled.

"I don't have any comment," said Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Several Democrats have privately admitted they likely don't have the votes to block a Republican proposal to keep the government funded through September, multiple sources told ABC News.

Tensions were on full display at the private meeting. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was yelling so loudly about the impact of a shutdown that reporters could hear her through the walls.

One Democrat who spoke on the condition of anonymity told ABC News, "We lost this two weeks ago ... we should've been beating this drum for a month."

At that point, only Democratic Sen. John Fetterman had publicly signaled he would vote to keep the government open.

Fetterman insisted that he won't succumb to the posturing he sees from party leaders after he urged Republicans to keep government open in the past when Democrats controlled the upper chamber.

"Never, ever, ever, ever, ever shut the government down," Fetterman told reporters at the Capitol on Thursday afternoon. "Democrat, Republican, independents, anyone. Never shut the government down. That's one of our core responsibilities."

Fetterman called the political pressure "spicy" -- telling reporters that he's remaining "consistent" in his principled belief not to vote for a shutdown.

Fetterman acknowledged that Republicans "are daring" Democrats to shut down the government, but the freshman Democrat worried that furloughed workers and people depending on federal services are the ones who are "really going to hurt."

Now that Republicans cleared their bill through the House, Fetterman said he believes the battle is over.

Fetterman said the only time Democrats have leverage is if the Republicans need the votes in the House.

"The GOP delivered, and that effectively iced this out. And that forces us to say, 'Are you going to shut the government down, or you are going to vote for a flawed CR?' And now for me, I refuse to shut the government down."

Schumer on Wednesday said Senate Democrats would not provide the votes needed for Republicans to advance the House-approved deal to fund the government through September. Instead, Schumer proposed a one-month stopgap measure to allow more time for appropriators to negotiate and complete full-year funding bills.

Republicans and the White House, meanwhile, are preemptively pointing the finger at Democrats if a shutdown ensues.

"If it closes, it's purely on the Democrats," President Donald Trump said as he took reporter questions while meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office on Thursday.

Trump was asked whether he's step in to negotiate with Democrats and he said he would if Republicans requested it: "If they need me, I'm there 100%."

Spurs G De’Aaron Fox to miss rest of season with finger injury

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox will miss the rest of the season with a finger injury.

The Spurs said Fox will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a tendon on his left hand.

Fox was injured during training camp in October while he was still with the Sacramento Kings. He still averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 62 games total this season. The Spurs acquired him on Feb. 3, and he averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 17 games for San Antonio.

Fox had his highest-scoring game with the Spurs on Wednesday, finishing with 32 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in a 126-116 victory over Dallas.

The Spurs expect him to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of next season.

Fox was an All-Star and an All-NBA third-team selection in 2022-23 for the Kings. The next season, also with the Kings, he averaged a career-high 26.6 points and led the league in steals.

Mavericks forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper has season-ending wrist surgery

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Mavericks forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper has undergone season-ending surgery on his right wrist, one of many injuries that have plagued the defending Western Conference championship since they traded Luka Doncic.

The team announced the surgery Thursday night, a day after the procedure, and said Prosper would miss the rest of the season.

Prosper’s playing time surged in his second season as the injuries piled up for Dallas. He made his second start of the season in the first game after Doncic was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.

Davis injured his groin in his Dallas debut, and the setbacks just kept coming for Dallas. Prosper was among the eight players listed as out in the Mavericks’ most recent game, a 126-116 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday.

Prosper was shut down after playing 25 minutes in a 30-point loss at Milwaukee on March 5. The 2023 first-round pick averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 11 minutes this season.

Davis still hasn’t returned, and the Mavs are 10th in the West, the final spot in the play-in tournament. Dallas lost to Boston in the NBA Finals last season.

The 49ers flip long snappers, signing Jon Weeks to replace Taybor Pepper

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers made a long snapper switch Thursday, cutting Taybor Pepper after five seasons in the role and signing free agent Jon Weeks from Houston.

Pepper took over the long snapping role early in the 2020 season in San Francisco and missed only one game in that span when he was on the COVID list for the 2020 finale.

The Niners overhauled their special teams operation this offseason, firing coordinator Brian Schneider and hiring Brant Boyer. San Francisco has targeted several special teams players early in free agency and now have made a switch at long snapper.

The 39-year-old Weeks spent the past 15 seasons in Houston and never missed a game. He appeared in all 244 regular-season contests for the Texans and 14 playoff games. He made the Pro Bowl following the 2015 season.

Micah Parsons starts social media spat after DeMarcus Lawrence says Cowboys can’t win Super Bowl

DALLAS (AP) — Star pass rusher Micah Parsons of the Cowboys and now-former teammate DeMarcus Lawrence traded barbs on social media after Lawrence said he chose Seattle in free agency in part because he was never going to win a Super Bowl with Dallas.

“This is what rejection and envy look like! This some clown (stuff),” Parsons wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, before adding a clown emoji.

“Calling me a clown won’t change the fact that I told the truth,” Lawrence responded. “Maybe if you spent less time tweeting and more time winning, I wouldn’t have left.”

The reaction from Parsons was prompted by an interview posted on X in which Lawrence said, “Dallas is my home. … But I know for sure I’m not going to win a Super Bowl there.”

The Cowboys haven’t even reached an NFC championship game since winning the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl title to cap the 1995 season.

Lawrence, who agreed to a three-year deal with the Seahawks, was a second-round draft pick by Dallas in 2013 and signed the biggest contract for a defensive player in club history six years later after consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks.

Lawrence never had more than 6 1/2 sacks after signing the big contract, while the Cowboys made it to the divisional round four times in his 11 seasons. He said the Cowboys didn’t offer him a contract this offseason.

The 32-year-old was limited to four games by a sprained foot in 2024 and missed at least half the season in two of the past four years.

Parsons is the fourth player in NFL history to record at least 10 sacks in each of his first four seasons. The other three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With Parsons going into the final year of his rookie contract, the Cowboys could be on the verge of making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett just took that title with an extension that averages $40 million per season.

Rangers left-hander Bradford to open season on injured list with sore elbow

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Texas Rangers left-hander Cody Bradford will start the season on the injured list because of soreness in his throwing elbow.

Bradford had an MRI this week that came back clean, but Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Thursday the club will shut him down for 10 days to see how he responds. Bradford was scratched from a scheduled start on Wednesday.

Bradford is the second Texas starter to get hurt this week after Tyler Mahle was scratched from a start with forearm soreness. The right-hander expected to start throwing again in a few days.

The 27-year-old Bradford went 6-3 with a 3.54 ERA in 13 starts last season after appearing eight times the year before. He also pitched in five playoff games during the Rangers’ 2023 World Series run.

Shohei Ohtani and four other Japanese players come home to start the MLB season

TOKYO (AP) — It’s only two games to start the Major League Baseball season — the World Series-champion Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome.

For the record, the MLB regular season consists of almost 2,500 games.

But it’s much more for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who was born in Japan. And for Shohei Ohtani and the four other Japanese players competing at home for the Dodgers and Cubs.

Then there’s MLB, which opens its regular season for the second straight year in the Asian market. A year ago it was Seoul, South Korea, where the Dodgers and San Diego Padres split two games. It was also where the betting scandal broke around Ohtani’s interpreter.

“It’s hard to tell if this is the golden age for Japanese players in the United States,” Ohtani said Friday, speaking through an interpreter, as both teams trained at the Tokyo Dome.

“I know there’s been a lot of Japanese players that came before me,” Ohtani added. “But having five (Japanese players) is a big deal. It’s truly a big deal.”

Asked what he was most looking forward to, Ohtani replied: “Eating good food, getting over the jetlag, and just being able to enjoy playing the game.”
Roberts back in Japan

It’s a homecoming for Roberts, who was born on Japan’s southern island of Okinawa to a Japanese mother and an American father. He’s expecting relatives to attend from Okinawa, where last year he was honored by officials there.

“For me it’s personal because I get to represent my mom’s side of the family,” Roberts said. “I have a lot of relatives and family that can watch this baseball game — watch a Dodgers game at night instead of having to watch us in the morning.”

The time difference between Japan and the American east coast is 13 hours, and Japan is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Japan is Dodgers country, swept away by Ohtani, the World Series title, and pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki. They are expected to be the Dodgers starters against the Cubs

“I think our mission was accomplished painting the counry of Japan in Dodgers blue,” Roberts said.

Yamamoto and Ohtani talked about the joy of being home, as did Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga and Seiya Suzuki, the likely DH. Imanaga is expected to start against Yamamoto in the first game.

“I hope my teammates are really enjoying Japan right now,” Ohtani said. “But also I hope the fans get to see my teammates enjoying Japan.”
Ohtani says pitching on track

Ohtani was reminded that he has not thrown a bullpen session in several weeks as he hopes to return to pitching after missing out last season following elbow surgery.

“I want to prioritize the hitting aspect as we’re getting into the season, to give a little breather mentally and physically to the pitching side of thing,” he said. “This is according to plan and I’m pleased with how things have been going.”
Sasaki with something to prove

For Sasaki, it’s different. The 23-year-old signed with the Dodgers two months ago and needs to prove himself, though many feel he’s a can’t-miss prospect.

“I literally was in Japan until a couple of months ago,” he said through an interpreter. “For me it’s more about being able to pitch in a different uniform on a differnt team and make sure I do perform at my best.”

Sasaki met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday in his office and gave him an autographed Dodgers cap. He was accompanied by Dodgers owner Mark Walter.

“I’m truly happy that the Dodgers are opening the season in Japan,” Japanese media reported Ishiba as saying.
Cubs party with Imanaga and Suzuki

Cubs manager Craig Counsell talked about a party thrown Thursday by Imanaga and Suzuki to welcome the other Cubs to Japan. For most it’s the first visit.

What impressed Counsell was a large tuna that was carved up in a ceremony at the party. Sashimi and sushi for all.

“We had tuna cut open,” Counsell said. “Some of the players participated in that, which was scary for a second with players with knives in their hands. But other than that it was great.”

Counsell said the trip to Japan was about “kizuna,” which is the Japanese word for bonding. He’s obviously been schooled by his Japanese players.

“That started for our team last night with the great party and being able to be together,” Counsell said.

Texas A&M’s Wade Taylor IV leaves SEC Tournament as career scoring leader, passing Allan Houston

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Wade Taylor IV is leaving Music City his earliest yet with No. 14 Texas A&M. He’s taking a handful of Southeastern Conference Tournament records with him.

The 6-foot guard played and lost his 11th tournament game Thursday in double overtime to Texas, but not for lack of effort.

Taylor finished with 29 points and was 17 of 18 at the free-throw line. That made Taylor the SEC Tournament career scoring leader with 202 points. Allan Houston, a two-time NBA All-Star, had 187 points over nine games from 1990-93 with Tennessee.

“I’m extremely blessed to be in that position,” Taylor said after being told he passed Houston. “Thankful for my teammates and our coaches for helping me be in that position because without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today. So great honor. I’m thankful.”

The Aggies guard also now has the tournament’s most field goals attempted with 156 after 18 against Texas. That topped the mark set by Tony Delk at Kentucky from 1993-96.

Taylor’s nearly perfect day at the free-throw line also gave him the records for free throws attempted (65) and made (61). Houston held both of those marks previously.

Taylor also became the 28th SEC player to reach 2,000 points with his first bucket of the game — a driving layup with 13:10 to go in the first half.

Tre Johnson’s 3 in double OT puts Texas ahead to stay in win over No. 14 Texas A&M at SEC Tourney

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tre Johnson made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:08 left in the second overtime and the Texas Longhorns extended their first visit to the Southeastern Conference Tournament by beating old foe No. 14 Texas A&M 94-88 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — JT Toppin had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lift No. 9 Texas Tech to a 76-74 victory over Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night.

The second-seeded Red Raiders never trailed but almost gave up the lead in the final minute after missing their final 10 field-goal attempts. VJ Edgecombe’s attempt at a tying jumper at the buzzer missed off the glass.

Darrion Williams scored 14 points and Elijah Hawkins and Kerwin Walton had 12 each for Texas Tech (25-7), which will face Arizona in Friday’s semifinals.

Norchad Omier had 29 points and 15 rebounds for seventh-seeded Baylor (19-14).

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders shot 19.4% from the field in the second half, including 3 of 15 from 3-point range.
Key moment

Hunter scores 21, No. 10 Clemson battles back to beat SMU 57-54 to reach ACC Tournament semifinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Chase Hunter scored 21 points, Jaeden Zackery added 11 points and No. 10 Clemson battled back to beat SMU 57-54 on Thursday night for its ninth straight win to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals.

Matt Cross led SMU (23-10) with 13 points, while Boopie Miller had 10.

SMU had a chance to tie or take the lead after Hunter missed a 3 with 17 seconds left. The Mustangs called timeout with 12.5 seconds left, but Chuck Harris missed a corner 3. There was a battle for the rebound before the ball went out of bounds. It was initially ruled the ball went off a Clemson player, but after reviewing the play officials ruled SMU touched the ball last.

Hunter was fouled on the inbounds play and made a free throw with 2.1 seconds. Cross’ full-court heave at the buzzer fell short.
Takeaways

SMU: Cross picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half, but the Mustangs didn’t waiver and stayed right with the Tigers until the end.

Clemson: Starting guard Dillon Hunter appeared to jam a finger late in the first half and did not return. Coach Brad Brownell said after the game Hunter might have broken his hand. Hunter had an ice bag on his right hand in the locker room after the game. He will have X-rays on Friday.
Key moment

Hunter drove through the lane, stopped and then hit a turnaround jumper to put Clemson up by four with less than two minutes remaining.

American Airlines Boeing 737 catches fire at Denver airport

DENVER (AP) — Twelve people were taken to hospitals after an American Airlines plane landed at Denver International Airport on Thursday and caught fire, prompting slides to be deployed so passengers could evacuate quickly. All of the people transported to hospitals had minor injuries, according to a post on the social platform X by Denver International Airport.

Flight 1006, which was headed from the Colorado Springs Airport to Dallas Fort Worth, diverted to Denver and landed safely around 5:15 p.m. after the crew reported engine vibrations, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

While taxiing to the gate, an engine on the Boeing 737-800 caught fire, the FAA added.

Photos and videos posted by news outlets showed passengers standing on a plane’s wing as smoke surrounded the aircraft. The FAA said passengers exited using the slides.

American said in a statement that the flight experienced an engine-related issue after taxiing to the gate. There was no immediate clarification on exactly when the plane caught fire.

The 172 passengers and six crew members were taken to the terminal, airline officials said.

“We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority,” American said.

Firefighters put out the blaze by the evening, an airport spokesperson told media outlets.

The FAA said it will investigate.

The country has seen a recent spate of aviation disasters and close calls stoking fears about air travel, though flying remains a very safe mode of transport.

Recent on-the-ground incidents have included a plane that crashed and flipped over upon landing in Toronto and a Japan Airlines plane that clipped a parked Delta plane while it was taxiing at the Seattle airport.
