LONGVIEW – The Longview police department is alerting residents about work at home and online jobs scams. The way it works, the victim submits an application by email for the job. Then they receive a fraudulent check for payment of their duties. They are told to deposit the check in their account, then remove the funds and wire the money to another account. That money ends up in the hands of the overseas scammer. Most of these jobs are linked to Nigerian scammers. The bank then tells the victim the check is fraudulent and they are responsible for the money. You can get more information on this scam from the FBI and Federal Trade Commission websites.
An Indictment in a Fatal Tyler Accident
TYLER – A Tyler man has been indicted for intoxication manslaughter in connection with a fatal Tyler wreck. The Smith County grand jury indicted 24 year old Terry Lee Jr. last week. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals in May in connection with the death of 58 year old Harold Wayne Coleman of Tyler in February. Lee’s car crashed on Gentry Parkway at Shawnee Boulevard. Lee’s toxicology test shows his alcohol blood content level was at .092 following the wreck. The legal limit is .08. He remains in the Smith County Jail under a $500,000 Bond. The accident occurred on February 9th. Lee’s car veered across the southeast bound lanes, left the roadway and struck a guide wire for a telephone pole. The vehicle rolled and struck a building. Four others in the car were injured.
A Guilty Plea in a Federal Drug Case
TYLER – A north Texas woman has pleaded guilty in Tyler federal court to drug conspiracy charges. Nimrose Khan, 35, of Carrollton entered her guilty plea Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge K. Nicole Mitchell. A combined task force of federal, state and local law enforcement officers, executed federal arrest and search warrants in Plano, Carrollton, Dallas and Tyler. The warrants stemmed from a joint investigation in which the Smith County Sheriff’s office took part. Federal prosecutors say Khan and her co-defendants, conspired to distribute synthetic drugs at two businesses. One of those was the Minute Stop/Valero Gas Station on Highway 64 West in Tyler. Tyler Man Booked on Charges Including Attempted Kidnapping
TYLER — A Tyler man has been arrested for aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. According to Tyler police, Freddi Betancourt, 25, met a woman he had a previous relationship with at Noble Young Park around 8:30 Wednesday night. Police said Betancourt forced the woman into his car where he sexually assaulted her before driving off with the victim still in the vehicle. A witness at the park called police and reported the situation. Police received another call from a second witness who stated they saw a car matching the suspected vehicle’s description on Frankston Highway. A woman was reportedly trying to get out. Betancourt was arrested and booked into the Smith County Jail. His bond has been set at $100,000.
Another Test for Longview’s Emergency Sirens
LONGVIEW – Longview’s emergency sirens are now all working again. All 20 of the city’s emergency warning sirens sounded and rotated during Wednesday’s test of the system. However, a timing issue was identified which will be addressed as soon as possible. During the test, the sirens sounded for five minutes as scheduled, but only rotated for three minutes. It is believed that this was due to a setting within the electronic equipment. These settings will be examined and adjustments will be made as soon as possible. A follow-up test will occur next Wednesday, June 21 at noon, weather permitting, to confirm that the settings have been adjusted correctly. Marshall Burglar Nabbed
MARSHALL – A man responsible for numerous burglaries is in custody. On Tuesday, officers saw a man looking through business windows. When they tried to check on him, he ran. After a brief chase, officers caught Lavonta Moore, 18, of Marshall. It was discovered he was wanted for theft. He was booked into the Harrison County Jail. While talking with detectives, Moore admitted to burglarizing Blissmoor Valley Ranch, The General Store and Barbie’s Formal Wear, all last Saturday. He is now charged with three counts of burglary of a building, one count of criminal mischief, evading arrest, assault on a public servant and a theft charge from that separate case.
Dump the Pump Day in Longview
LONGVIEW – Today is the 12th annual National Dump the Pump Day. And Longview residents will benefit from it. Longview Transit is joining with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the activity. Longview transit is offering free rides on Thursday. The slogan of this year’s activity is “Dump the Pump, Ride Public Transit.†Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a convenient travel option that also helps people save money. According to the April American Public Transportation Association Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $9,312 annually by downsizing to one car. A Prison Sentence for Drug Violations
TYLER – A Jacksonville man is going to federal prison for drug trafficking violations. Abdul Kriem Lugman, 41, pleaded guilty in January to possession with intent to distribute about 24 grams of cocaine. He was sentenced Wednesday to 180 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark. In December 2015, officers responded to a report of drug dealing at the Home Place Inn. They could see Lugman in a chair with a small white rock-like substance in his hand near a digital scale. A search of the room turned up crack cocaine, cash, digital scales, a police scanner, firearms and other drugs and drug paraphernalia.
East Texas Agency Focuses on Prescription Med Abuse
MARSHALL — Next Step Community Solutions has three coalitions working across thirteen East Texas counties to combat underage drinking and drug use. Program specialist Staci Clark says, “Adults don’t think that prescription meds are as dangerous because they’re written by doctors, but we know that in this region, we have one of the highest…as far as insurance claims for opioid prescriptions as anywhere else in the state.” Clark says teens are increasingly abusing un-used prescriptions they find at home. Recently, the organization received a grant from the state that will fund a secure prescription drug dropoff location so left over, un-used prescriptions can be properly destroyed.

Attempted Sexual Assault by Man Claiming to be a Peace Officer

JACKSONVILLE – A man accused of attempted sexual assault and impersonating a public servant is in custody in Cherokee County. Arrested was Emmitt Harrell Christian, 22. He is said to have impersonated a police officer and hand cuffed a woman and groped and kissed her. When another car came to the park where the couple were, Christian is said to have released the woman and left.The woman then alerted authorities. Man Wanted by Five Agencies Arrested in Arp
ARP – A man wanted by numerous agencies have been arrested in a traffic stop in Arp. Tom Rece McPherson, 47 of Arp, was stopped by Arp police on Tuesday. According to the department’s Facebook page, McPherson was wanted by multiple Agencies on 7 felony warrants for forgery of a financial instrument. During the stop, officers found narcotics on him. They also seized several items from his motor vehicle that are used to commit forgery. Besides the outstanding warrants, McPherson has also been charged with possession of a controlled substance. Fire and Explosions Reported in Tyler
TYLER – A series of explosions and fire ripped through Tyler Welder’s Supply on U.S. Highway 271, just north of the Tyler city limits. It began around 1:45 Tuesday afternoon, forcing some evacuations and shutting down Highway 271 in both directions. By Tuesday night, traffic was flowing through the area again. Employees were able to flee the building and no injuries were reported. Smith County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Darrell Coslin told KETK, gas for welding supplies ignited and multiple explosions occurred when the blaze reached tanks, firing tanks and shrapnel high into the air. Firemen were still on the scene, watching as the fire burned itself out. Investigators will be trying to determine how the fire started.

Tyler Man Heading to Prison for Drug Violation
TYLER – A Tyler man is going to prison for drug trafficking. Nyrearae Lewis, 34, pleaded guilty on January 5 to possession with intent to distribute crack and powder cocaine. He was sentenced Tuesday to 57 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark. According to federal prosecutors in May of last year, Lewis transported about 130 grams of cocaine to a residence in Tyler, Texas, with the intent to sell it. Once Lewis arrived at the house, he was assisted by the homeowner in converting some of the cocaine to around 44 grams of crack. The homeowner declined to purchase any of the cocaine so Lewis left with it. Shortly, his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation and the cocaine was found under the passenger seat where Lewis was seated.

Fatal Lufkin Hit and Run Probed
LUFKIN – A man has died at a Tyler hospital following a hit and run accident. Manuel Escobedo, 80, of Lufkin, was walking home Monday night when hit by a car on Martin Luther King Drive. He was taken to CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Lufkin and then flown to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Police say the car was driven by Shanna Ellison, 20, of Lufkin. One Killed and One Injured in East Texas Train Incident
JACKSONVILLE – One of two persons who hopped aboard a train in San Marcos, has been killed in Cherokee County. A Hispanic male was killed when he either jumped or fell from a Union Pacific freight train. The man’s body was found Tuesday morning on the railroad tracks just under a mile west of Jacksonville. A woman suffered a broken leg when she jumped from the train in the Troup area. The train, which had originated in Laredo, was carrying autos to Chicago. The Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation of the death.
Indiana Man Sentenced in Tyler Federal Court
TYLER – A Fishers, Indiana man has drawn prison time after pleading guilty to committing perjury. David Hernon, 56, formerly of Richardson, pleaded guilty in December 2015, to making false declarations before the court. He was sentenced Tuesday to 15 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield. Prosecutors say Hernon and his business partner had filed a suit against a Korean company. They alleged breach of contract, trade secret misappropriation, and unfair competition. East Texas Woman’s Body Found On Galveston Beach
CRYSTAL BEACH (AP) – Coast Guard officials say a body has been found near Crystal Beach on Galveston’s Bolivar Peninsula that matches the description of a Palestine woman. She went missing after trying to help her 4-year-old child struggling in the rough Gulf of Mexico surf. The Galveston County Sheriff’s office says witnesses told them Brandy Mosley, 33, went into the water Monday afternoon with a relative after a wave swept away her son. He had been playing in the sand at the edge of the water. The child, who was wearing water wings, and the relative made it back to shore but Mosley didn’t. Residents say visitors often are unaware of dangerous riptides along the beach.
Longview’s Warning Sirens Get Another Test

LONGVIEW- There will be another test of Longview’s siren warning system on Wednesday. This will be the third week in a row the system has been tested because of faulty equipment. A technician from Oklahoma joined local technicians last Friday to make the necessary repairs. Last week, 12 of the city’s 20 sirens not not work properly. The week before, three of the sirens did not work correctly. And, besides the sirens, storm-damaged electronic equipment at the Public Safety Communications Center was either repaired or replaced. The equipment was damaged by an EF1 tornado that hit Longview on May 28th.
Man Holds Suspected Intruder at Gunpoint
TYLER — A suspected intruder is in custody after a Smith County homeowner held him at gunpoint near FM 2767. KETK reports that according to the sheriff’s office, Robert Fitch managed to keep the suspect at bay until officials could arrive on scene. Fitch was not injured. The suspect was booked into the Smith County Jail on a charge of burglary of a habitation. He has been identified as Paul Brent Hopkins, 38, of Tyler. His bond was set at $20,000.
Man Indicted, Accused of Assaulting an Officer
LONGVIEW — A Longview man is indicted for allegedly assaulting a police officer. In April, officers were called to a party on Tryon Road. According to KETK, they say a man pulled a knife on several people before leaving the scene. He was later identified as 18-year-old Dayton Mize. Officers say he ran from police and then cut his own wrist. He then reportedly punched an officer in the face and was later arrested. After receiving medical treatment, he was booked into the Gregg County Jail.
Marshall Fugitive Apprehended

MARSHALL – One of Marshall’s “Most Wanted” suspects is now in custody. Monday afternoon around 2:00, Marshall police stopped a vehicle on Rosborough Springs Road. The passenger in the vehicle, identified as Dontrell “Wookie†Anderson, 23, fled the scene on foot. Anderson was arrested after a brief chase. He was booked into the Harrison County Jail on a felony parole warrant. More charges could be filed.
Longview Man Indicted for Violent Home Invasion
GREGG COUNTY — The suspect in a Longview home invasion has been indicted by a Gregg County grand jury. According to the Longview News-Journal, Malique Makail Shakur Henderson, 20, of Longview, was indicted on two counts of aggravated robbery. Henderson was being held Monday under $1.5 million bond in the Gregg County Jail. He was arrested April 6 after police said he knocked on the door of a home on South Green Street, used a rock or piece of concrete to force his way into the home and attacked Lynella Wiley, 67 and Birne Wiley, 79, and stole several items. The Longview Police Department credited several neighbors and witnesses with helping to maintain visual contact with Henderson until officers could arrest him.
A Citation Solution Program at Tyler’s Municipal Court
TYLER – Tyler’s Municipal Court now lets you pay your fines on a monthly installment plan. The Citation Solution Program will run from through July 12. Anyone with unresolved municipal court cases and no current payment arrangement with the Court, regardless of year of the outstanding case, total amount owed or warrant status, may voluntarily appear and pay $50 as a down payment and enter into a written payment plan of $100 per month. Those who are unable to pay the authorized monthly installment will have the opportunity to schedule an appointment to see a judge and explain their circumstances. A Merger of East Texas Banks
TYLER- Southside Bancshares, the parent company of Tyler’s Southside Bank, has announced a merger with First Bank & Trust, East Texas’ parent company Diboll State Bancshares. The combined assets of the company comes to nearly $7 billion. A company news release says the merger has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2017, after receipt of regulatory approvals, the approval of the shareholders of Diboll State Bancshares, Inc. and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions. State Funds For Improvements in Gladewater
AUSTIN — An East Texas city will benefit from over $7 million the Texas Water Development Board is handing out for rural water and wastewater systems. The board is giving the city of Gladewater $5.5 million. This consists of a $1.6 million loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and a $3.9 million loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. With the loans, Gladewater will be able to finance water and wastewater system improvements. Missing Longview Boy May be in Mexico
LONGVIEW – Longview police continue their search for an 18-month old toddler. He is Marcos Macedo, who was last seen by his guardian on May 31st in the presence of his non-custodial mother, Maria Becerril-Leon. The police report says she is a known drug user and was last seen in Upshur County, but Marcos was not seen. There have been unconfirmed reports Marcos is in Mexico with his mother. However, the police department had not been able to confirm that information. As they continue to look for the boy around Gregg County, they have contacted the FBI and the U.S. Department of State with information about the unconfirmed reports.
Another Truck Struck in Longview
LONGVIEW – Despite large warning signs, Longview’s Green Street underpass has claimed another victim. A Penske Rental Truck became stuck at the underpass between Cotton and Green Streets. It was reported stuck just after 11:00 Monday morning. Northbound traffic was stopped at what has become known as the “Green Street Monster.” The truck was freed and traffic returned to normal shortly after 1:15. This marks the third truck claimed by the bridge and underpass this year.
