HENDERSON COUNTY — An Athens man has been arrested following a traffic stop Monday night. According to the Henderson County Sheriff, William Allen Henderson, 57, was pulled over for a traffic violation just outside of Athens around 9:00. During a search of his vehicle, investigators found a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine and a glass pipe, along with a loaded .38 special handgun. Henderson is a convicted felon and prohibited from carrying a firearm. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Fatal Tyler Wreck under Investigation
TYLER — One man has been killed, one injured following a wreck in Tyler Monday night. It happened around 10:45 at Loop 323 and Paluxy. Officials said a silver Jeep was driving westbound on the Loop at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light. The Jeep struck the driver’s side of a red GMC Yukon traveling southbound on Paluxy. The driver of the Yukon was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Dan Rodela Gonzalez (pictured), 25, of Tyler. The driver of the Jeep, Ethan John Craft, 24, of Tyler, was transported to UT Health. No arrests have been made but the circumstances of the wreck are under investigation, including whether alcohol or other substances may have played a role.

Fatal Upshur County Wreck
GLADEWATER – A two vehicle accident in Upshur County has left one person dead. Killed was Lee James Odum, 18, of Big Sandy. His car was legally parked and he was standing at his mailbox when his vehicle was hit by a pickup driven by Cody Lindley, 34, of Mineola. Odum was transported to Christus Mother Francis Hospital-Tyler where he died on Sunday. The accident happened on US-80, one mile west of Gladewater. The Department of Public Safety says the crash remains under investigation.
The Theft of Fire Department Equipment
TYLER – A Smith County fire department is reporting the theft of jackets and pants. The bunker gear was stolen from the Chapel Hill Fire Department. Around ten pair of pants and jackets were stolen. This gear is essential in keeping the men and women of the Chapel Hill Fire Department safe and is an integral part of their life saving equipment. Most of the jackets have a “Chapel Hill†or similar marking on them. The photograph is an example of the stolen bunker gear. The actual items may look slightly different. This burglary possibly occurred between February 18 and February 22. The Smith County Sheriff’s department is asking for your help in recovering the items or arresting the suspects. Two Nabbed in Marshall Robbery
MARSHALL – Two persons have been arrested and one is being sought in connection with a Marshall robbery. It happened on Benita Drive just before 8:00pm on February 24th when a man was robbed by three persons. They took an undisclosed amount of money from the victim and fled in a pickup. The victim chased the suspects in his vehicle, with the suspects firing shots at him. He was not injured. On Monday, it was announced that detectives had arrested in the case Sabastian Anthony and Richard Christopher, Jr, both 17 and both from Marshall. A warrant has also been issued for Erik Galindo, 18, (pictured) also from Marshall.
Henderson County Drowning Victim Identified
TOOL – A body found in Cedar Creek Lake has been identified as that of Michael Wayne Dickson, 30, of Tool. The body was found on shortly after 4:15 Friday afternoon in the water off Sampan Drive near Tool. The body was sent to a Dallas lab for autopsy. The preliminary report said there were no signs of trauma and the findings are consistent with drowning.
Details Released on a Fatal Area Accident
TATUM – A Rusk county teenager, who was not wearing his seat belt, was killed in a weekend accident. Killed was a Tatum High School senior, Hector Eduardo Duran, 18. The Department of Public Safety report says his pickup was traveling north on County Road 2142 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle ran off the road and hit several trees. Duran, who was tossed from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident, which remains under investigation, happened shortly after 10:30 Saturday night five miles west of Tatum.
Tyler Man Busted on Child Sex Abuse Charges
TYLER – A Tyler man has been arrested on sexual abuse charges out of the Beaumont area. Smith County records show Dusty Wayne Authement, 33, was booked into jail at 6:00pm on Friday. He was picked up by the U.S. Marshal’s Service on warrants out of Jefferson County. The jail records show he is being held on charges of continuous sexual abuse of child under the age of 14 and sexual assault of a child. His bonds total $150,000.
Lane Closure on I-20 at Toll 49
LINDALE – An east bound lane closure can be expected on Interstate Highway 20. The closure will be at the Toll 49 Bridge from 9:00am till 4:00pm Tuesday and from 9:00am till 1:00pm on Wednesday. While the inner lane is closed, traffic is being rerouted on the outer eastbound lane. The action is needed while work is performed on the bridge due to a realignment issue caused by a July accident.
Temporary Closure of Industrial Drive again Tuesday
LONGVIEW – Following a Sunday closure, Longview’s Industrial Drive will be closed to through traffic again Tuesday between Marshall Avenue, U.S. Highway 80, and Cotton Street to allow for railroad track maintenance. The railroad crossing on Industrial Drive will be closed to all traffic. Drivers are encouraged to use Eastman Road as an alternate route.
Temporary Road Closure on Palace Avenue
TYLER – As part of the construction of Fire Station No. 1, the utility contractor must close Palace Avenue between West Gentry Parkway and West Queen Street to install a waterline. There will be no through traffic. The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions or other unforeseen issues. As it stands now, the area will be closed from Monday through Friday, March 22.
TxDOT Road Projects Update
TYLER – TxDOT is planning to conduct the following construction and maintenance work throughout the district during the week of March 4. Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Tyler Maintenance crews plan to continue base repair work on State Highway 110 just north of Farm Road 3271. Base repairs will also be conducted on Loop 323 near Tyler Iron and Metal followed by ditch maintenance on State Highway 31East just east of Farm Road 757. Sudduth Running for City Council
TYLER – Now that Nix is resigning from the south Tyler city council position, Criss Sudduth announced that he will file his candidacy for the post. Sudduth, a lifelong resident of Tyler, has owned Ark Assurance Group, an independent insurance agency, for the last 28 years. In announcing his intention to run for the city council position, Sudduth said “I want to continue the conservative pay as you go plan that was implemented years ago and has allowed our city to make improvements by paying cash, eliminating our bond debt and keeping city property taxes low.†In a written statement, Sudduth said, “We must remember that city government’s number one priority should be public safety of our citizens. I am passionate about supporting our police and fire departments. We must also work to improve our infrastructure in the city, focusing on traffic, drainage and street improvements.â€

Nix to Run for Mayor
TYLER – A Tyler city councilman is resigning to run for mayor next year. South District City Councilman John Nix has announced his resignation. He intends to run for mayor next year. He wants to succeed Martin Heines who, because of term limits, will have to step down next year. Nix says major improvements have been made throughout the city. But he says the city still has major needs that must be addressed in improving the infrastructure, such as roads, drainage, traffic and parks. Nix says, In order to be eligible, and to comply with the City of Tyler charter, he is required to submit his letter of resignation to Mayor Heines. Tyler Luby’s Closed
TYLER – Tyler’s Luby’s Restaurant on Roseland Boulevard is closed. There appears to be some question if the closing is temporary or permanent. The sign on the door says they are closed for construction. The construction is said to concern structural problems with the building. The company says they haven’t even started looking at designs, but they want to remain in Tyler. However some Luby’s employees have told our news partner KETK that they were told the cafeteria is closed permanently and they no longer had jobs. The general manager for Luby’s in Longview told KETK the store had foundation issues and, as of today, the business is closed permanently. Luby’s has been in Tyler for 55 years. It remains to be seen if it will reopen.
Missing Elderly Man Safe
SMITH COUNTY – An elderly man, missing in Upshur County, has been found safe in Smith County. Moody Pool, 91, was last seen by his family around 11:00 Wednesday morning. He said he was going to town to get his pickup inspected. He was later seen near Shreveport, heading toward Gilmer. A motorist found Pool late Friday morning on U.S. Highway 271 near Interstate Highway 20, northeast of Tyler. He appeared to be dehydrated and disoriented and was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
February in Tyler Was Slightly Warmer
TYLER – According to the national Weather Service, Tyler’s weather for the month of February 2019 was slightly warmer and slightly wetter than normal. Compared with February 2018, the month was 0.3 degrees cooler, and 4.25 inches drier. February 2018 was the second wettest February on record. The Year-to-date rainfall is 2.39 inches less in 2019 than through the end of February 2018. The winter of 2018-2019 was slightly warmer, 1.8 degrees, and wetter, 4.55 inches, than normal. It was 1.7 degrees warmer than the previous winter, and was 2.40 inches drier. A trace of snowfall occurred in the 2018-2019 winter.
A SWAT Team Helps Serve an Arrest Warrant
TYLER – A Smith County man has been arrested for aggravated assault. Arrested late Thursday morning was Kevin Michael Smith, 40. He is in the Smith County Jail under a bond of $1.5 million for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family violence. His arrest is the result of a domestic disturbance that occurred the night before. Smith is a documented gang member with a lengthy, violent criminal history. Because of his history and the potential for violence, Smith County SWAT team assisted in serving the arrest warrant. He was taken into custody without incident.

Legislation Targeting Opioid Abuse in Texas
AUSTIN – A state legislator from East Texas has filed two bills focusing on the opioid crisis in the state. State representative Jay Dean of Longview has filed the bills which focus on increasing the availability and the visibility of drug take back locations, targeting criminals and empowering people. Dean admits that not every opioid user is an abuser. There are people with a serious illness that need opioids to give them any type of quality of life. His legislation targets the abuser. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says over 130 people die from an opioid overdose every day in this country. And Dean’s news releases says Longview ranks 17th nationally in opioid abuse.
Legislation Offering Relief to Nursing Homes
AUSTIN – State Senator Bryan Hughes of Mineola has filed legislation to establish a program that brings Texans’ own federal tax dollars back home to improve the quality of nursing home care in the state. Hughes says the proposed legislation could provide much needed relief to Smith County’s 15 long term care facilities that have experienced years of under funding from the state. Under the bill, nursing homes will receive additional funding for meeting nationally recognized performance standards and for making investments in staff wages and benefits. Funding will also be directed towards modernizing buildings. This would create comfortable homelike settings. The funding would also be used for investing in new technology. All of this, Senator Hughes says, would help to improve overall resident quality of life. And Hughes said his legislation will not add to the state budget.
Help for Those Who Like to Hike and Bike
TYLER – In the near future, Tyler may have more paths for walking and biking. The city and the Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization want to create a safer, more connected biking and walking infrastructure. This would be a combination of bike lanes on roads, bike paths and sidewalks for walking. Two major roads have been named as the most important part of the long-range improvement plan. They are South Broadway and Fleishel Avenue. The final plan, called Active Tyler, will be presented to city leaders next month. If approved, TxDOT will be approached for grants to fund the project.
Marshall School Official Resigns
MARSHALL – The Marshall School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Business and Financial Services, Kristin Byrd, has submitted her resignation. The Longview News Journal reports Byrd submitted her resignation, which is effective immediately, after she reached a separation agreement with the district. She had been on paid administrative leave since late last week. School trustees had voted unanimously on Monday to begin termination proceedings against Byrd. That process is no longer necessary since she has submitted her resignation. There is no word on the allegations against Byrd. School Superintendent Jerry Gibson did say it had nothing to do with any criminal or moral actions on her part.
Murder For Hire Trial Involving Longview Man Underway
EAST TEXAS — A Collin County jury is hearing testimony in the murder-for-hire trial of a Longview man. Police connected the dots in a love triangle to bring the case before a jury. Ronald Rosser is accused of taking more than $5,000 to kill McKinney businessman Richard Moore. The 66-year old was shot five times in the head with a handgun four years ago. Court records say McKinney Police believe Rosser was hired by Moore’s estranged wife, Chansamorn Pokai, and her lover Stephen Brockway. They say they found text messages and documents that led them to Rosser, a convicted felon. He is the first of the three to stand trial with Brockway and Pokai still in jail.
Man Convicted in an Assault Case
TYLER – A Tyler man has been convicted of assault family violence. The county court at law jury convicted Richard Tyler Bostick of the misdemeanor charge on Wednesday morning. He had been accused of hitting his girlfriend in the face with his hand. Judge Taylor Heaton will sentence Bostick after a pre-sentence investigation has been completed. He faces up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
Local SCORE Chapter Received National Awards
TYLER – The East Texas Chapter of SCORE has received 3 national awards for it Tyler chapter. SCORE is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed nationwide. The East Texas Chapter was recognized as the Outstanding Turnaround Chapter for 2018 for its growth. Henry Burch, past chair of the local chapter, was recognized for his contributions to the growth of the chapter. Leland Ferguson received a certificate for 20 years of volunteer service to SCORE.
Input Wanted on a Possible TJC Name Change
TYLER – The issue of a possible name change for Tyler Junior College comes before school trustees on March 7th. The college is up for re-accreditation in 2021. The accrediting body wants to know beforehand if TJC is going to change its name. Because TJC offers four-year degrees and workforce programs, school leaders want to know if the word “junior” is sending the wrong message to future students, teachers, even job recruiters. A study found recommended new names were “Texas Eastern College,” “East Texas College,” and simply removing the “Junior,” making it “Tyler College.” At next week’s school trustees’ meeting, they want public comment regarding a potential name change for the school.
