Nix to Run for Mayor
Posted/updated on: March 4, 2019 at 10:52 amTYLER – A Tyler city councilman is resigning to run for mayor next year. South District City Councilman John Nix has announced his resignation. He intends to run for mayor next year. He wants to succeed Martin Heines who, because of term limits, will have to step down next year. Nix says major improvements have been made throughout the city. But he says the city still has major needs that must be addressed in improving the infrastructure, such as roads, drainage, traffic and parks. Nix says, In order to be eligible, and to comply with the City of Tyler charter, he is required to submit his letter of resignation to Mayor Heines. His last day on the city council will be March 27th.
The city will hold a special-called city council meeting on Wednesday, March 6, to officially accept his resignation. Under state law the next available date for a special election to fill that vacancy is May 4. If the city council calls a special election at their special-called meeting on Wednesday, then the deadline date for candidates from District 6 to file for ballot is by 5:00pm on Monday, March 25. State statutes dictate the deadlines for filing applications for place on ballot in a special election. In this case, if the election-day is on or after the 70th day after the date the election is ordered, then the deadline will be at 5:00pm. on the 62nd day before election-day. The election cycle for the District 6 city council seat will run concurrently with the election cycles for Districts 1, 3 and 5.
Also At the special meeting on Wednesday, it will be requested that the city council cancel the elections for Districts 1 and 5 as those seats are uncontested.
