Cornyn: E TX to receive $710K in second round of coronavirus grants for public housing authorities
WASHINGTON — Several East Texas cities and counties were awarded just over $700,000 in another round of federal grants to help public housing authorities recover from the economic fallout from the coronavirus, U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced Thursday. The funding was appropriated by Congress in March and comes through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as part of the CARES Act. The Tyler Area Housing Agency will receive over $161,000. Longview can expect over $156,000. The remainder has been allocated to numerous other communities across East Texas.
Shooting in Longview Wednesday night injures male
LONGVIEW — The Longview Police Department has released information about a Wednesday night shooting in the city. According to the our news partner KETK, officers were called to Tallwood Lane around 9 p.m. Wednesday. They arrived to find a 45-year-old man with non-life threatening injuries. He was, however, taken to the hospital to be checked out. ETBU gets challenge grant opportunity of $1.5 million from Mabee Foundation
MARSHALL — East Texas Baptist University took a big step in their expand academic capabilities recently with a matching grant challenge from the Mabee Foundation. Dr. Scott Bryant told KTBB Thursday, “It’s not a done deal yet, a challenge grant means we have to raise an additional amount before they will pass along their portion of the grant. It’s a $7.5 million project, fortunately we have already raised $3 million towards it. TYLER — The Paycheck Protection Program resumed accepting applications in July, but Ahmaud Goree, with the SBA, told KTBB Thursday, “The new deadline to apply is this Saturday. What we are looking for is for small business under 500 employees, that also includes the self-employed, sole-proprietors and independent contractors. Any of those Uber drivers out there, Lyft drivers, barbers, beauticians, musicians, musicians at churches, definitely can qualify for this program. New splashpad at Glass Rec to open this weekend
TYLER — Tyler Parks and Recreation announced Thursday, the new splash pad at the Glass Recreation Center, on W. 32nd St., and Woldert Park is now complete. The splash pad will switch on and open to the public this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free and will be open daily. Tyler officials want to remind the public that play is not monitored and visitors should exercise caution.
New Names: Legacy and Tyler High School passed by TISD
TYLER — The names have changed of two high schools in Tyler. In a board meeting Thursday, Tyler ISD board members voted to replace the name of Robert E. Lee High School with Legacy High School. The vote was 6-1 in favor of Legacy. Also in a 6-1 vote, John Tyler High School reverted back to Tyler High School, which it had originally been before it changed in 1958 to JT. Both High Schools will keep the same mascots. The board now has the task of paying for the changes, that could cost over $300,000.
Local university victim of ransomware attack
TYLER — The University of Texas at Tyler says it was the target of a ransomware attack. According to our news partner KETK, in a letter to university supporters, school president Dr. Michael Tidwell said the university was notified by Blackbaud, a third-party database provider, of a “security incident†that occurred in May. Blackbaud provides software and online apps that support philanthropic and communication activities, serving a host of clients that include most of the University of Texas system. September Rodeo canceled in Longview
LONGVIEW — The PRCA Rodeo, scheduled for September, in Longview has been canceled. The Longview Greggton Rotary Club announced the decision on Wednesday, citing safety concerns related to COVID-19, as the cause for the termination. The rodeo was originally scheduled for April, but pushed the date back due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. The Rodeo was set to Celebrate it’s 30th year in 2020. ETCOG receives over $2.6 million grant for programs
East Texas — The East Texas Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging has received a grant for the program totaling $2,695,330 in COVID-19 Families First Coronavirus Response Act Funds. The need for services, particularly home-delivered and packaged meals, has increased as community measures to slow transmission of COVID-19 have closed meal sites and have left many family caregivers unable to assist their older loved ones. TISD to address new school names at Thursday morning meeting
TYLER — Tyler ISD has a scheduled Board of Trustees Board workshop meeting on Thursday at 11 a.m. Item 3 on the agenda is discussion and possible action to select the new names for Robert E. Lee High School and John Tyler High School. TISD decided to make the historic change last month to both schools following a unanimous decision by council members at the July 16 meeting. Officials anticipate the rebranding of the schools will cost upwards of $300,000 to change buildings, uniforms, and fine arts.
Hit the Bricks announces monthly event
TYLER — On the second Saturday of every month, Downtown Tyler celebrates “Hit the Bricks.” Organizers say the August event, will be partially online and in person with restaurants and stores reopening to the public. Frankston woman arrested after a shooting involving boyfriend
ATHENS — An East Texas woman was arrested Tuesday night following a shooting in Henderson County. According to a media brief, Tiffany Marie Schultz, 29, of Frankston, was arrested on charges of First-Degree Felony for shooting her boyfriend. The victim survived. Reports state that Schultz and the man began arguing at a residence in the Brierwood Bay subdivision, he was tampering with a vehicle at the residence, Schultz allegedly went into the home and retrieved a revolver. The man was holding a battery from a vehicle when she fired the first shot. As the argument continued, Schultz fired a second shot and struck the victim. He was transported to a hospital by private vehicle. Schultz faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Pop-up drive-in coming to Wal-Marts in East Texas
TYLER — Walmart is preparing for pop-up, drive-in movie theaters in their parking lots. The event will take place across 26 states, and stores in Kilgore will have shows October 13-14, in Tyler dates include October 16-17, and October 20-21. The site does not identify which locations in Tyler will be used for the screenings. Free tickets can be obtained after 4 p.m. Central time Wednesday. Tickets will not be available at the gate. Smith County Crime Stoppers offering reward in ‘caltrop cases’
SMITH COUNTY — Tyler-Smith County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest in the “caltrops case.†According to our news partner KETK, nearly 300 of these “tire spikes†have been collected in the past weeks along I-20 in the westbound lanes, between Hwy 69 in Smith County and FM 314 in Van Zandt County. They have also been found in the westbound lanes of I-20 near the US 69 on-ramp in Lindale, near the Hideaway and Hwy. 110 exits and in the eastbound lanes near the Hideaway on-ramp. Capital Murder Trial pushed back for Bullard man
TYLER –The capital murder trial for a Bullard man was pushed back Tuesday afternoon due to the coronavirus pandemic and both sets of lawyers awaiting DNA testing results. According to our news partner KETK, 23-year-old Brentavian Henderson is charged in connection to the killing of Roy Bowins, 77. Continuance granted in Ortiz case
TYLER — An extension was granted for the trial of a Tyler man accused of multiple counts of child sexual assault. According to our news partner KETK, Luis Ortiz, 23, could receive life in prison for allegedly posing as a teenager and then sending graphic messages to minors on social media. Drive-thru Produce Distribution
TYLER — The East Texas Food Bank will conduct its next free produce distribution this Friday morning. Disbursements will take place from 8-10 a.m. at the East Texas State Fairgrounds. The circulation is returning to a drive-thru model. Free produce and fresh items, pending availability, will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are no eligibility or ID requirements. The distributions are held on the first and third Friday morning of each month.

Bullard high school Junior celebrated
TYLER — A Bullard high school student was recognized in The Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday. Avery Hicks was commemorated for her achievement of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Some of Hicks accomplishments include education of first graders in Oaxaca, Mexico to learn English and Spanish. She helped produce materials intended to help the students learn translations. This included Hicks making over 7,000 game pieces that were designed, printed and laminated for the students to use for years to come. The Gold Award was established over 100 years ago establishing criteria to recognize the highest level of excellence of girls in the program.

Proposed Tyler overpass opposition grows
TYLER — Opposition continues to grow over a proposed overpass on the Loop in Tyler. The Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization decided to change the language in their transportation improvement program after an unanimous vote, eliminating the reference to the overpass. The language now reflects overall support to improving the intersection, meaning they will consider other alternatives. TYLER — NET Health added 60 total new coronavirus cases for Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Smith County. The county has a total of 2,369 cases. There are 17 deaths associated with the coronavirus. There are 1,646 active cases and 646 cases of recovery. In Gregg County, as of Monday, authorities confirmed 1,410 cases, 276 cases of recovery. There are 23 deaths associated with the coronavirus. 5,924 people have been tested; 4,264 were negative. Police arrest Oakwood man on multiple charges
PALESTINE — Palestine police arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged assault at a Wal-Mart on Loop 256 in the city. According to a news release on Monday, the victim reported an unknown black male poured a chemical, believed to be a cleaning solution, on her upper body and face while she shopped in the store. The victim, a 49 year-old Palestine resident,accompanied by two small children did not know the suspect, who fled. The victim was transported by ambulance to Palestine Regional ER for treatment. $100,000 gift for ETBU Sisk Health Services Clinic and endowed scholarship
MARSHALL — East Texas Baptist University announced a sizeable donation on Monday. According to a news brief from the school, Irene Sisk gave $100,000 to ETBU. A $75,000 gift is designated for the new on-campus Health Services Clinic, and $25,000 is designated for an endowed student scholarship. ETBU’s health clinic will be named the Sisk Health Services Clinic in honor of Mrs. Sisk’s gift and and in memory of her late husband, Dr. Walter Sisk, M.D. The clinic is opening for the Fall 2020 semester.
East Texas coaching legend dies
EAST TEXAS — A legend in the high school coaching died on Monday. According to our news partner KETK, Dickey Meeks death was shared by family members, but did not give details on his passing. Meeks spent 42 years as a high school football coach, with 37 as a head coach. Meeks won state championships at Chapel Hill in 1989, and Henderson in 2010. Power restored following crash in Tyler
TYLER — A traffic alert on Friday evening had Tyler police advising motorists to use caution at the intersection of West Grande Blvd. and Old Jacksonville Hwy. A crash at the scene took out power and traffic lights until early Saturday morning. Officers directed traffic until the power could be restored. According to a news brief, traffic lights were reestablished at 4:47 a.m. Details were not given as to the cause of the accident or those that were involved.
