SMITH COUNTY — Several accidents in Smith County Monday send four people to the hospital, one by helicopter. It happened off I-20 near CR 353. Authorities say an 18-wheeler’s back tire began shaking, forcing the driver to lose control. The truck flipped and blocked the westbound lanes of the interstate. As traffic started to build, other trucks collided.

TYLER � Tyler police are looking for the lone gunman who robbed Rent Time at 3861 Highway 64 West. It happened shortly before 7:00 Monday night.

An employee told officers she was alone at the store when the suspect entered and began asking questions about some of the furniture. After a short conversation, the victim and suspect walked back toward the office area of the store. He then placed a pistol in the victim�s back and told her to give him all of the money.

Once the suspect had the money, he told the victim to enter the office, shut the door, and wait for him to leave. As she entered the office other employees arrived back at the store. The suspect fled out the front door while the other employees entered through the back door. The other employees did not see the suspect. No injuries were reported.

A search of the area turned up no trace of the suspect. He is described as a black male possibly wearing all black. He is about 6�3� tall and is thin and clean shaven. He was wearing sun glasses and a black baseball cap with �Sox� written on the front of it.

JEFFERSON � Marion County authorities are investigating the shooting death of a Jefferson man. It happened around 11:30 Sunday night in the eastern part of the county, off County Road 3222. Found dead on the front porch of a home was Donte Mitchell, 24. He had been hit by a shotgun blast to the neck. Officers say the shooting may have been done by the father of Mitchell�s estranged girlfriend and the shooting may have been in self defense. The investigation is continuing.

LONGVIEW — Police in Longview are seeking leads after a woman’s purse holding a treasured memento was stolen. On Tuesday, May 3, around 11:07 a.m., the local woman�s purse was snatched while she was walking toward the front of a store located in the 3600 Block of McCann Road. The victim told police she had just locked her car and put her keys in her pocket. She had her purse over her shoulder and was walking with the aid of a cane to the front of the store.

A white, newer model Ford truck, with some blue scratches or markings of some kind on the driver�s side door drove by her. The victim also stated it had a very loud exhaust on it. She noticed three younger looking Hispanic males in the vehicle. She said that two of them got out of the truck and walked up to her. One grabbed her and pulled her towards the truck, while the other wrestled her purse off her arm. She said that when they got her purse they ran back to the truck and shouted, �Good luck� to her. The truck was last seen heading North on McCann Road from the store parking lot. The victim said two of the suspects were wearing white t-shirts and blue jeans. The driver of the truck was wearing a plaid shirt and had a goatee. She also said one of the suspects had a tattoo on his face.

Although she had cash and debit cards in her wallet, the victim stated that the most important thing to her, and the one thing she wants back desperately, is the printed obituary she had from her husband�s funeral. She has carried it in her purse for many years since his death. TYLER � Authorities have arrested two men wanted in connection with a Tyler murder six years ago — one of whom was also wanted in a shooting six days ago. Surrendering to Longview authorities Monday afternoon were Terrance Wideman, 24, of Jacksonville and Bryante Denard Gee, 27, of Chapel Hill.

Investigators say Wideman was allegedly the a getaway driver in the homicide of Christopher Horn, 19. Horn was shot in the parking lot of Kureshe�s Mart at 1118 West Gentry Parkway the evening of April 7, 2005. Detectives say they also confirmed that Gee was the shooter in the incident.

Wideman was also said to have been involved in an incident in which gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Broadway Square Mall around 6:45 p.m. on May 11th. That aggravated assault case is still under investigation. It was during the investigation of that shooting that detectives were able to secure evidence implicating Wideman and Gee in the Horn murder. Both have been charged with first degree murder. Bond was set at $1,000,000 each by Judge Christi Kennedy.

HENDERSON � A Rusk County shooting has led to the arrest of Timothy Scarborough, 30, of Henderson. Monday morning around 1:00, Sheriff Danny R. Pirtle and Rusk County Sheriff�s Office Criminal Investigators responded to a call of a gunshot victim on County Road 462. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the lower torso and was taken by helicopter to a local hospital for emergency surgery. The victim remains in the hospital and is currently in ICU. Scarborough was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a second degree felony that carries up to twenty years in prison. Scarborough�s bond remains jailed on $20,000 bond. The investigation continues, and authorities say more information will be released as it become available.

TYLER � A suspect in numerous auto burglaries in East Texas, Southeast Texas, and Louisiana is in custody after being arrested in Lufkin. On Sunday, Tyler police responded to over 30 auto burglaries that occurred during daytime hours in the city of Tyler. The suspect was later identified as Brian Ruston Linscomb, 44, of Orange, Texas. He�s suspected of breaking into vehicles at Willowbrook Country Club, Bergfeld Park, Faulkner Park, Rose Rudman Park, Woodcreek Center, Broadway Square Mall, Children�s Park, Tyler Tennis and Swim, and Tyler Internal Medicine.

A witness followed Linscomb�s vehicle down 69 South towards Mixon. Law enforcement authorities were notified of the information on Linscomb�s vehicle and determined that he was wanted out of Orange, Texas, for felony auto burglary, with a $100,000 bond. Linscomb was spotted in Lufkin Sunday night and was taken into custody by authorities. Linscomb is a suspect in over 92 cases of auto burglary in Louisiana. Tyler investigators are checking into the incidents that occurred Sunday in Tyler, and charges are pending.

SMITH COUNTY — Smith County Fire Officials say there have been at least two major wrecks on I-20 near Highway 271 within 150 yards of each other. Troopers say both westbound lanes on I-20 are blocked and traffic is being rerouted. The first wreck involved a semi that rolled over. The other two were pin-ins. A KETK photographer reports 4 people have been taken to local hospitals. Two of the people injured are in serious condition; one was airlifted by helicopter. Drivers should avoid this area until further notice.

LUFKIN � A Lufkin man has been killed in a one vehicle accident in Lufkin. The wreck on first street occurred around 3:00 on Sunday morning. Dead at the scene was Patrick Steven Scott, 22. Police reports indicate his car was southbound at a high speed when he lost control and rolled the vehicle. Scott was partially ejected from the car.

TYLER — One suspect is arrested after an early morning stabbing. Tyler Police were called to the area of North Palace and Bow Street around 3:15 Monday morning. They say when they arrived, they found a 48-year-old man with stab wounds to his face and hand. The victim claims he was attacked at a home on the 500 block of North Moore before he walked to a pay phone to call 911. Authorities went to the crime scene and took Steven Webb, 53, Tyler, into custody. Webb was booked into the Smith County Jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The stabbing victim was treated at ETMC for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

TYLER �Smith County voters have finally been presented a jail improvement package they can accept. The measure easily passed in voting Saturday. The final, but unofficial tally: 3,644 for and 2136 against. Under the $35 million dollar plan, 384 beds would be added with the expansion and renovation of the existing jail.

County leaders are applauding the bond issue’s passage. County Commissioner Jeff Warr spearheaded the effort. He said, “We’re just so thankful that the citizens really looked at the issues of the safety of our officers and of the expense and the money we were wasting of theirs in sending prisoners to other counties.” Sheriff J.B. Smith has been pushing for a jail overhaul for fifteen years. Among his comments: “No one wants to spend money on a jail. It’s like putting money on a dead horse to run at Louisiana Downs. But if you want law and order, you have to have a jail. That goes with it.” Smith also thanked the citizens and commissioner Warr. County Judge Joel Baker singled out Warr as well. After the results came in Saturday night, Baker said, “This is a great night for him, and it’s a great night for the citizens of Smith County. This is something that we’ve needed to do for a long time, and I’m glad to be able to finally put it to rest.”

Longview residents have approved a $52.6 million streets bond to repair roads throughout the city. According to city officials, taxpayers will see a maximum impact of about 1.6 cents on the property tax rate within three years. Included in the proposal was extensive repairs and utility relocation for three downtown streets; more than a dozen local intersections, including four Hawkins Parkway crossings; sidewalks on two South Longview thoroughfares; and improvements to dozens of oil-dirt roads and other streets such as South Green and East Cotton.

A Longview school trustee, who has been on the board for over three decades, has been re-elected. Incumbent John Harrison defeated Courtnie Wyche by 29 votes. Complete, but unofficial returns showed Harrison with 92 votes and Wyche with 53.

WINNSBORO � A one vehicle accident in Northeastern Wood County Saturday afternoon has left one person dead. The accident happened at the intersection of State Highway 11 and County Road 4310. Dead at the scene was Robert Emmett Kilmer, 33, of Keller, Texas. The Department of Safety report says a sleeping bag, that had been tied on the back of his motorcycle, dropped down and became entangled in the rear wheel. Kilmer, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike.

DIBOLL � One person has been killed and two injured in a pickup/motorcycle accident two miles north of Diboll. The accident happened around 11:45 Saturday night. The driver of the motorcycle, Stephen Burchfield, 51, of Huntington, was killed and his passenger, Roliand Juneau, 36, of Lufkin, is in critical condition at Tyler�s East Texas Medical Center. Neither person on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet. A passenger in the pickup received minor injuries. The Department of Public Safety reports the pick-up, towing a car hauler, pulled out onto Farm Road 2497 and was hit by the motorcycle.

UNDATED — Here’s a quick look at other work planned in the Tyler District of the Texas Department of Transportation.

TYLER — Starting Monday, Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to perform approximately two days of pavement-repair operations at the intersection of U.S. Highway 271 (Beckham Avenue) and State Highway 31 (Front Street). Once that work is completed, the crew is scheduled to move north and continue repairs in various locations on US 271 inside North Loop 323. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in while the work is in progress. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid delays.

Also this week in Tyler, on Tuesday, the Union Pacific Railroad is scheduled to close Spur 164, also known as Greenbriar Road, between Spur 364 and State Highway 31 to all traffic while the railroad makes repairs to the crossing at that location. The work is scheduled to begin at 7:00am and last through 7:00pm. Detours will be posted.

Finally this week, TxDOT contractor Reynolds & Kay, Ltd., is scheduled to begin resurfacing work on Farm Road 14 in Tyler between U.S. Highway 271 (North Beckham) and North Loop 323. Farm Road 14 in Tyler is also known as East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard until it turns north on North Church Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion in late June.

LONGVIEW — The Union Pacific Railroad, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation, will be closing Loop 281 to all traffic near Farm Road 2087 on Sunday while the railroad makes repairs to the crossing at that location. Detours will be posted, and the roadway is scheduled to be re-opened by Sunday night.

Also this week in Gregg County, in Kilgore, TxDOT maintenance crews are scheduled to continue pavement repairs on U.S. Highway 259 Business in Kilgore between Lantrip Street to the south end of the US 259 Bypass. The work is being done in preparation for a seal coat application later this summer. Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress, and motorists are encouraged to be prepared to reduce speed and merge in and around the work zone.

HENDERSON COUNTY — The Union Pacific Railroad, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation, is scheduled to close Farm Road 1616 north of Athens between Loop 7 and Farm Road 2752 on Monday while the railroad makes repairs to the crossing at that location.

Then on Thursday, the railroad is scheduled to close State Highway 19 just north of downtown Athens for the same work. The work at each location is scheduled to begin at 7:00am and last through 7:00pm. Detours will be posted.

ANDERSON COUNTY — Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to begin resurfacing operations on U.S. Highway 287 south of State Highway 294 in Elkhart, while a second crew makes base and pavement repairs on Farm Road 2961 between Farm Road 59 and Farm Road 837 on the north side of the Engeling Wildlife Management Area. Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.

Also this week, TxDOT’s District Wide Seal Coat program is scheduled to continue in Anderson County in the following locations:
*On US 287 between the Freestone County Line and FM 321;
*On FM 2961 between FM 59 and FM 837; and
*On SH 19 between FM 321 in Montalba and the Henderson County Line.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic in two lane areas. Loose gravel may be present for several days following a seal coat application. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid delays.

VAN ZANDT COUNTY — Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to perform base and pavement repairs on Farm Road 3227 between State Highway 198 and Farm Road 47, while a second crew performs fog-seal operations on Ranch Road 2909 between Canton and Martins Mill, and on Farm Road 47 between State Highway 243 and State Highway 198.

A third crew is scheduled to perform pavement and edge repairs on Farm Road 857 just south of Grand Saline. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.

CHEROKEE COUNTY — Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to continue pavement repairs in Jacksonville at the intersection of SW Loop 456 and Farm Road 347 on Tuesday, followed by the same work on State Highway 135 and State Highway 110 in Troup. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic in two-lane areas.

RUSK COUNTY — Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to conclude base-repair work on U.S. Highway 259 north of Henderson by Tuesday, then move to perform pavement and edge repairs on Farm Road 1662 between Farm Road 1798 in Laneville and Farm Road 2753 in Anadarko. Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.

KILGORE — Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to continue pavement repairs on U.S. Highway 259 Business in Kilgore between Lantrip Street to the south end of the US 259 Bypass.
