TYLER — A plea has been accepted in the 7th District Court from a former Bishop Gorman men’s basketball assistant accused of attempting to sexually assault a UT Tyler student. According to our news partner KETK, Jakeal Lockett, 25, was charged with breaking into a women’s apartment and attempting to climb on top of her and kiss her without her consent. Lockett pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of burglary with intent to commit assault, which is a second-degree felony, instead of a first-degree. He now faces 2-20 years confinement, instead of 5 years to life. With the lesser charge, Lockett will not have to register as a sex offender. Whitehouse ISD School Threat Deemed “Non-Credibleâ€
WHITEHOUSE — Whitehouse ISD and the Whitehouse Police Department have determined a threat made against the high school was a prank. According to our news partner KETK, police confirmed Sunday night they were working to get to the bottom of a post that was being shared by students and parents. On Facebook, the school district said, “The post was determined to be a prank by a student not enrolled in WISD, in an attempt to bully that Whitehouse High School student…The district is safe and secure and the high school will follow its regular schedule on Monday, August 26th.†Over the weekend a student took to Snapchat to warn others not to attend class at Whitehouse High School Monday as a student threatened to open fire at school. Police were unwilling to share any other details on the investigation.
Jacksonville ISD Mourns Death of Asst Principal Elgin Johnson
JACKSONVILLE — The city of Jacksonville is mourning the loss of Nichols Intermediate Assistant Principal, Elgin Johnson, who died at his home early Sunday morning. According to our news partner KETK, People left their condolences to the family on Jacksonville ISD’s Facebook page after they made the announcement Sunday. Mr. Johnson covered a variety of positions from teacher in 1998 at Robert E. Lee High School to Assistant Principal and Dean of Student Life. Johnson began serving as the Assistant Principal at Nichols Intermediate in 2017.

Kilgore College Gifts Retraining to Qualified Apps
KILGORE — The Kilgore College Workforce Development-Continuing Education (WDCE) department recently announced its Texas Talent Connection (II) Grant has been extended to Jan. 31, 2020. This will allow the school to accept applications from qualified displaced workers wanting to take advantage of tuition-free classes in one of three industry areas. Certificates offered include Commercial Driving (CDL); Industrial and Residential Electrical Technology; and Human Resource Specialist. TVC Delivers Big Check to Local Charities
TYLER — Representatives from the Texas Veterans Commission visited the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Tyler late last week to present grants from the TVC’s Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. According to our news partner KETK, the check delivered was nearly three quarters of a million dollars for 4 Veterans charities. The groups will receive varying amounts of the $725,000. The grants will assist those to continue providing services for over 500 Tyler area veterans. The funds support a wide range of services including housing, financial aid and mental health. TxDOT Project Updates for Tyler District
TYLER — TxDOT is planning to conduct a range of construction and maintenance work throughout the Tyler District during the weeks of August 26 and September 2. Summer seal coat operations have wrapped up, in the Tyler District. City of Tyler Begins Street Cleaning Sunday Night
The City of Tyler’s Street Department will be cleaning and sweeping all major intersections, center medians and turn lanes on Highway 155 and Loop 323 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting on Aug. 25th through Aug. 29th. The city will have two sweepers and a four-person ground crew. The ground crew will be ahead of the sweepers, clearing debris and cutting weeds where needed. City of Tyler sweepers are well lit up, and the ground crew will have an arrow board warning traffic to stay to the right. The ground crew will be wearing highly reflective clothing.

Man Arrested for Stolen Vehicles, Black Tar Heroin & Crystal Meth
TYLER — A Tyler man was arrested on Friday, following a lengthy investigation by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. According to our news partner KETK, Kevin Ramon Erwin was taken into custody when deputies served an arrest warrant on his residence following an almost six-month investigation. When they arrived, Ewrin ran but was apprehended. Authorities located a truck, motorcycle and generator all reported stolen. Accused in Vandalism of Historic Cemetery Identified
EUSTACE — The suspects involved in the vandalizing of Goshen cemetery last week have been discovered. According to a statement from Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse, the alleged vandals were identified through an anonymous tip to CrimeStoppers. Chandler McKinney, a 22 year-old male from Eustace has been taken into custody. He was booked on a $50,000 bond, but has been released. Another suspect is 19-year-old Tristan Castillo, of Eustace. Castillo is set to turn himself in on Friday. Charges were also filed against a juvenile for the crime.
Suspect Wanted in Shooting of 16 Year Old Male
TYLER — Tyler Police are looking for a suspect wanted in the Sunday shooting a of 16 year-old male. Investigators say the youth was selling a gun and had agreed to meet the potential buyer in a South Broadway parking lot. Three black males remained inside a vehicle while the victim was standing by the car, a man in the back seat grabbed the weapon by force with the intent to steal it. A struggle ensued between the victim and suspect over the weapon resulting in the suspect shooting the victim twice, hitting him in the arm and shoulder. GUN BARREL CITY — An East Texas man who is autistic has been found after being reported missing in Gun Barrel City. According to our news partner KETK, police report that 22-year-old Wesley Horton has been found safe.
KC Partnering with ETBU on Bachelor of Science in Education Degree
KILGORE — Kilgore College and East Texas Baptist University are teaming up to address what’s termed a widespread shortage of teachers in East Texas. ETBU is hosting university-level courses on KC’s campus, allowing KC students to take ETBU courses leading toward a bachelor’s degree in education — early childhood through sixth grade. KC President Dr. Brenda Kays and ETBU President Dr. Blair Blackburn solidified the plan that provides ETBU an office in Kilgore for recruiting, student services, and advising for KC students and graduates. The cohort classes – which began Aug. 19 with nine students – are taught by ETBU faculty who travel to the Kilgore campus. Classes are currently held in the Watson Library but will be moved to the new Baptist Student Center on the Kilgore campus upon its completion.
2 Bodies Discovered on Monday in Gregg County Identified
GREGG COUNTY — The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office has identified two bodies discovered Monday night. According to our news partner KETK, they were found to be Joshua Lee Gregier and Sara Joy Travis, both white and both 31 years old. Gregier and Travis were found on Coulter Road off FM 1844. Deputy Josh Tubb said they do not know exactly where they are from, but the investigation is ongoing. On Wednesday, a preliminary autopsy report revealed that their cause of death could not be determined.
Smith County DA – “Supreme Court Doesn’t Like Death Penalty”
TYLER — On Thursday Gustavo Zavala-Garcia pled guilty to the murder of Kayla Gomez in a plea deal carried out with the Smith County District Attorney’s Office. According to our news partner KETK, Zavala-Garcia was sentenced to life in prison, instead of execution. District Attorney Jacob Putman said the reason for the deal was “The Supreme Court doesn’t like the death penalty.” A 2017 decision by the Supreme Court severely limits the State’s ability to execute those found to be intellectually disabled. CHAPEL HILL — A Paypal account has been created to help cover burial expenses of Madison Williams. Our news partner KETK has confirmed with family members the account is authentic. The three-year-old girl died on Sunday after walking between her mother and grandmother’s house. Preliminary autopsy reports confirm she drowned in a nearby pond. Zavala-Garcia Pleads Guilty, Will Spend Rest of Life in Prison
TYLER — The man accused of murdering a 10-year-old girl in Bullard in 2016 has pleaded guilty to the crime and will spend the rest of his life in prison. According to our news partner KETK, Gustavo Zavala-Garcia, 27, of Bullard, was in the 241st District Court Thursday morning to enter the plea for the death of his niece, Kayla Gomez. Kayla went missing from Bullard First Assembly of God Church in November 2016 and was found a few days later just a few miles away, in a well on Zavala-Garcia’s property. Zavala-Garcia had had his trial delayed five times, mostly to allow for further DNA testing. Prior to the guilty plea, the trial had been set for March 16, 2020.
Gilmer Teen Found Safe after Being Missing since May
HUGHES SPRINGS — The Hughes Springs Police Department reports 16-year-old Joshua Shaw of Gilmer has been found safe after being missing since May 8. According to our news partner KETK, it’s unknown why he went missing, and there was no immediate word on the circumstances of his return. Word went out August 18 about the search for Joshua as reported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
TISD’s Ag Center to Be Sold
TYLER — School board members in Tyler have voted to move forward with selling the district’s Agricultural Learning Center. Leaders say John Tyler High school’s ag center has been underutilized. The school says the sale does not jeopardize the district’s dedication to its ag program. A timeline on when the ag facility will hit the market isn’t known. Money from the sale would go back into the district’s general fund.
Smith County Jury Finds Accused Man Not Guilty of School Threat
SMITH COUNTY — A Smith County man was acquitted by a jury after being accused of making a school threat on social media in 2018. According to our news partner KETK, Tyler McGill, 23, was found not guilty of false alarm or report on Tuesday in the 241st Judicial District Court. McGill was arrested in March 2018 for posting a video on Snapchat of himself in a vehicle. The video showed several guns inside an auto with the caption “coming soon to a school near you.â€

TYLER — New initiatives and programs were announced Wednesday at the U.T. Tyler Annual Convocation. President Dr. Michael Tidwell said starting in the fall of 2020, students ranked in the top 25% of their class will be automatically accepted upon application.
