TURNERTOWN – Two kids have been killed and a man injured in a fire in Rusk County. It happened at a home on Highway 42 near U.S. Highway 64, south of Turnertown, Wednesday afternoon. All three of the injured were taken to a Henderson hospital where the two children, ages 2 and 4, later died. Their father was treated for minor injuries and released. The Texas Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to determine the cause of the fire
Murder Suspect Said to Be Competent
LONGVIEW – A psychologist has determined a suspect in a 2013 stabbing attack at a Longview hospital that left two dead is competent to stand trial. The Longview News-Journal reports Kyron Rayshawn Templeton received psychiatric treatment and underwent another mental evaluation last month. Earlier this week he was transferred from a mental health facility to jail in Longview, where he’s charged with capital murder and aggravated assault. Templeton was twice ruled incompetent in the November 2013 attacks at then-Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. Templeton was at the center, where his mother was scheduled for surgery, and told an officer he thought “they” were trying to kill her. A nurse and a visitor at the hospital were stabbed to death. Three persons were injured. Templeton’s case is on the docket Friday afternoon to determine if and when a trial will be set.
Fatal Cherokee County Shooting Investigated
CHEROKEE COUNTY — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office is investigating after a shooting at a location between Maydelle and Rusk. According to our news partner KETK, a teenager was shot and killed at a house on CR 2117. Officials confirm two people have been taken in for questioning. Another person of interest is still wanted.
Another Portion of Toll 49 is Now Open
LINDALE – Wednesday marked the first day traffic was permitted on a portion of Toll 49 on what is known as the Lindale relief route. This portion of the toll road runs from Interstate Highway 20 to U.S. Highway 69 north of Lindale. A $68.7 million contract was awarded in March of 2016 to build this segment. The groundbreaking for the project was held 5 months later. The use of the nearly seven mile section of Toll 49 west of Lindale comes earlier than anticipated. Sales Tax Figures in East Texas Top Last Years Numbers
AUSTIN – Sales tax allocations to East Texas, as well as the state, continue to be strong. The state comptroller’s office is sending out $817 million in local sales tax allocations for November. This is up nearly 5 1/2% from November of last year. Tyler’s November check tops $3.6 million, over 7 1/2% more than November of last year. To date, Tyler’s sales tax allocations exceed $40 million, up nearly 7%. Longview’s November check is for over $3.1 Million, up over 9%. For the year, Longview has received over $30 million for an increase of over 10%.
Gun Found On a Wills Point Campus
WILLS POINT – An investigation is underway concerning a gun that was found at Wills Point High School on Tuesday. A janitor found the gun in a trash can in a boy’s restroom. As he removed a trash bag he noticed a heavy item in the bag. Police officers say the gun in the bag was loaded. The ATF is trying to trace the firearm and the DPS is checking it for fingerprints. They are also checking video surveillance to try and determine who left the gun in the restroom
Smith County Prosecutor Changing Offices
LONGVIEW – A Smith County prosecutor announced Wednesday she is heading to Gregg County. The Smith County DA’s First Assistant, April Sikes, will be going to the Gregg County DA’s Office as First Assistant. She starts her new position on January 1st. Sikes came to Smith County from Corsicana in 2003. Since then, she has held a variety of positions in the DA’s office. She will be in the office of newly elected Criminal District Attorney Tom Watson. Watson defeated the 10 year incumbent in the primary election and had no opposition in Tuesday’s general election. Watson said he was proud to have Sikes as a member of his team.

No Danger to Hallsville Students
HALLSVILLE – A disturbing photo caused some concern in the Hallsville school system. According to the Marshall News Messenger, a student received the suspicious photo on their cell phone. The photo, which was sent by Air Drop showed a screenshot that read “Fights at 12:48.” It came from an unidentified number that referred to themselves as, “School Shooter.†In a call to parents, school principal Lindsay Slaten said an “investigation determined there was no imminent danger to students,” who remained in class and there was no lockdown.
Woman Wanted for Questioning
TYLER – The Smith County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a woman in connection with a current investigation. She is Lisa Hayley, 40. Hayley, who also is known as Lisa Loggins, is wanted for questioning in relation to a theft of property investigation. New Principals in TISD, Temporarily
TYLER – Tyler schools will be getting some new principals on Wednesday. TISD and the Tyler Area Business Education Council is hosting it’s 5th annual Principal for a Day event. Local business and civic leaders will serve as guest principals for the day. The guest principals will get a behind-the-scenes look at the local school system. They will shadow the principal, meet with students and faculty, attend student assemblies, and take part in other activities that make up the school day. They will all meet for lunch at the district’s Career and Technology Center where the district’s culinary arts students will cater and serve the meal.
Marshall Burglar Sought
MARSHALL – Marshall police are looking for a jewelry store burglar. He was caught on security camera footage burglarizing the jewelry store on Grand Avenue on Halloween. A Habitual Offender is Headed to Prison
GILMER – A Gilmer man is heading to prison after pleading guilty to the unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a habitual offender. Sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison was Randy Lee Rodenberg, 36. He was arrested back in April after sheriff’s deputies found him growing marijuana at his residence. They also found two rifles and 13 boxes of .22 caliber cartridges. Rodenberg entered a guilty plea prior to a jury being selected for his trial.

The Midterm Election Is Here
TYLER – Nearly half of the registered voters in Smith County voted early in the general election. For everyone else, the polls opened at 7:00 Tuesday morning in the midterm election. Besides the statewide races, some local races have drawn a lot of attention. Congressman Louie Gohmert is facing two challengers. Independent candidate Neal Kats is going up against state representative Matt Schaefer in the District 6 state house race. For Smith County Judge, incumbent Nathaniel Moran is being faced by Democrat Michael Mast. In Lindale, there is a $32 million school bond proposal on the ballot. These are just a few of the items to be decided. You’ll hear election returns Tuesday night here on KTBB.
Missing Headstone Sought
TYLER – The Smith County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in solving an unusual theft case. Missing is a headstone to a grave. It was was stolen from the Noonday Cemetery on Highway 155. It is believed it was taken in early to mid September. Officer Involved Shooting Reported in Gladewater
GLADEWATER — Details are limited following a reported officer involved shooting Sunday in Gladewater. According to our news partner KETK, one man is recovering after he was allegedly shot by a police officer. The father of the man shot told KETK his son was suicidal and the situation escalated quickly. Gladewater police are expected to release more information shortly.
TxDOT’s Weekly Roadwork Update
TYLER — TxDOT is planning a variety of maintenance work throughout the Tyler District during the week of Nov. 5. Tyler Maintenance crews plan to perform edge repairs on FM 2015 near US 271. Crews will also conduct pavement edge work on FM 2908. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control at both locations. Rains County Sheriff’s Office Searching for Stolen Camper
EMORY — The Rains County Sheriff’s Office needs your help finding whoever’s responsible for stealing a 2015 brown and tan Keystone Premier camper. According to our news partner KETK, the department says the thief or thieves made off with the camper in a dark colored Chevrolet Silverado pickup with running boards. Officials say that truck could also be a Duramax. No other details of the crime were immediately given. If you have any information, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 903-473-3153.
Longview Police Charge Man with Using Gun to Threaten Woman
LONGVIEW — Longview police arrested a 30-year-old Kilgore man Thursday afternoon on suspicion of using a gun to threaten a woman, according to a report. According to our news partner KETK and the Longview News Journal, Kevin Kietrell Richardson was being held on a $7,500 bond Friday in Gregg County Jail. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family violence, jail records show. Police arrested Richardson after responding to a call about an armed person on Reel Road near the Rainbow Drive intersection, the report said. The woman told police she and Richardson were arguing when he pulled a black pistol from his waistband, pointed it at the floor, then the air and threatened to come after her and her family if she were to leave. Richardson consented to a search, and police recovered the weapon inside the home, the report said.
A Naturalization Ceremony in Marshall
MARSHALL – The United States gained 39 new citizens in a ceremony that was conducted Thursday in Marshall. The group was administered the oath of allegiance to the United States in a special naturalization ceremony. Presiding at the ceremony was U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap. According to the Longview News Journal, 19 of the new citizens were from Mexico. Others were from 11 other countries, including Cambodia, Canada, Egypt, India, Vietnam, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom. One of the new citizens is Luisa Reyes, a native of Mexico, who now lives in Tyler.
A Halloween Surprise for an Area Woman
JACKSONVILLE – A Cherokee County woman, on Halloween night, was tricked and received a treat at the same time. Chelsea Dillard, who was expecting her second child, was in the bathtub at her home in Rusk when her water broke. Realizing the baby was coming quicker than anticipated, she called an ambulance. She was minutes away from UT Health-Jacksonville when she thought the baby was coming. The ambulance pulled over and paramedic Charles Janak delivered his first baby. Welcome to the world Devinity Dillard, who weighed in at 6.7 pounds and 19 inches long. Mother, baby and paramedic are all doing well.
An Egg Attack Sends a Man to Jail
OVERTON – A man is in the Rusk County Jail following an assault complaint at an Overton home. Placed in jail under bonds totaling $20,000 was Johnathan William Elkins, 36, of Overton. The Longview News Journal reports a woman complained that Elkins was intoxicated and started hitting her and a 5 year old with eggs. He is also said to have hit her with his knee below her left rib cage. He faces two charges of assault causing bodily injury, one of those out of Gregg County, and a charge of injury to a child. He is also being held on an Upshur County warrant for theft of property.

Former School Counselor’s Plea Rejected
TYLER – A state district court judge has rejected a plea from a former Arp school counselor who was convicted last month of sexual assault of a child. Barbara Orpineda was sentenced to 5 years in prison. She still faces one additional count and 2 counts of improper relationship between an educator and student. Judge Christi Kennedy rejected the plea Thursday during a pretrial hearing. She has given both the state and the defense 10 days to come to an agreement on how to proceed. Prior to becoming the Arp Elementary counselor, Orpineda taught seventh grade math for four years. When arrested, she denied the allegations. She also denied the allegations during the trial when she testified in her own defense.
A Memorial Service for David Irwin
TYLER – A memorial service has been scheduled for David Irwin, of Lindale. The managing partner for Tyler Ford died at his home Wednesday morning. He was 52. According to the Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale, a memorial service for Irwin will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at Tyler’s Grace Community Church. Along with his business, Irwin was known for many years as a supporter of local nonprofits. Perhaps his highest-profile community endeavor was providing a vehicle for the yearly raffle held by the East Texas Crisis Center during its East Texas Auto and Cycle Show.
Student Injured At School
PALESTINE – A Palestine High School student has been injured during a woodshop class. According to a posting on the school district’s web site, the student received immediate medical attention from the instructor, who is a certified EMT. After evaluating the student’s injuries, medical personnel decided that he should be flown to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas for precautionary treatment and evaluation. We will have more information when it becomes available.
Robbery Suspect Now in Jail
TYLER – No sooner had a Tyler robbery suspect been identified, he was arrested. On Wednesday it was announced that Thomas Mark Painter, 32, of Tyler was the suspect in the Tuesday morning robbery at the Fuel Plus Gas station on East Gentry Parkway. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Painter around 11:00 Thursday morning. It’s believed Painter is the person who came up behind a man who had just purchased $40 worth of scratch off tickets. He approached the man from behind, hit him in the head with his fist, grabbed the lottery tickets, and then fled. He’s now in the Smith County Jail under bonds totaling $55,000.
