TxDOT announces plans for upcoming weekTYLER — TxDOT is planning to conduct the following construction and maintenance work in the district starting on Monday. In Smith County, work continues on Loop 323 in Tyler from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights. Paving operations are being conducted on the south side from SH 155 moving east to US 69. Expect lane closures and delays as work is conducted. In Gregg County, Longview Maintenance crews plan to conduct ditch maintenance on FM 2275 in Warren City, east of Gladewater. Edge repairs are planned for FM 2011 from FM 2204 to SH 322. PTISD mourns loss of student

LONGVIEW — Funeral services will be observed Monday for a Pine Tree ISD student. The District announced on its social media page, that Alston Roger Craver died earlier this week. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home on Judson Road. Craver’s funeral service is July 27, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Longview. Gregg County coronavirus update

GREGG COUNTY — Gregg County health officials have updated the total number of positive coronavirus cases to 1,207, with 238 cases of recovery as of July 23. Another death has been reported, bringing the number to 17 deaths now linked to COVID-19. There have been a total of 5,146 tests given, 3,705 have been negative, 234 tests are still pending. Armed robbery Thursday night in Tyler

TYLER — Tyler Police responded to an armed robbery on Thursday night at around 9:45 p.m. The reported theft took place at the Valero on WNW Loop 323. The clerk advised that while he was mopping, a suspect wearing a red toboggan, dark blue shirt and grey shorts with a black handkerchief over his face came in the store pointing a gun at the other clerk behind the counter. The clerk mopping got into a physical altercation, causing him to drop the gun. The suspect fled on foot out of the store. The clerk behind the counter said she thought the suspect was going to shoot her. It was later determined that the gun was a replica but said neither clerk realized that until later.

KC cancels summer graduation ceremony due to rise in COVID-19 cases

KILGORE — Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the area, Kilgore College has decided to cancel its summer graduation ceremony, set for Aug. 6. The school announced in a media brief on Friday, that although there will not be an in person summer graduation ceremony, KC will recognize the students. The plan calls for a social media celebration, as well as on the college’s outdoor digital sign.

Former caseworker pleads not guilty to sexual assault

NEW BOSTON — A former East Texas caseworker has pleaded not guilty on all charges after being accused of sexually assaulting a teen she had supervised while employed at a juvenile facility. According to our news partner KETK, Jessica Pratt, 26, is charged with three counts of sexual assault of a child. Pratt allegedly picked up the underage victim in Pittsburg, Texas, and drove him to her father and stepmother’s house, and sexually assaulted him numerous times. TISD trots out ‘Return to Learn’ plan

TYLER — TISD unveiled their complete Return to Learn Plan on Friday. The strategy is available with critical information on the environments offered for students this fall: In-School Learning and Learn@Home. The plan also outlines health and safety protocols that campuses will follow during the school year. Fire destroys family home in Rusk County

LANEVILLE — A family in Rusk County had their home destroyed by fire Thursday morning. According to a post by the Rusk County Office of Emergency Management; multiple departments, including, Laneville, Mt. Enterprise, New Salem, and Carlisle Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze on FM 1662. Officials say no one was inside the house at the time of the fire.

Tyler Police investigating homicide

TYLER — Tyler Police are investigating a homicide on W. Vance St. According to a news release from the Department , Draveon Tykeith McCullough was found lying in front of the residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest, and pronounced dead and an autopsy ordered. The resident stated someone knocked on his door just before midnight and when he answered the door, a gun was pointed at him and a struggle ensued. During the struggle the deceased was shot. Draveon Tykeith McCullough, a 21 year old male from Tyler. The investigation uncovered a substantial amount of narcotics at the scene. This incident is still under investigation.

Gregg County looking for help in locating woman missing since March

LONGVIEW — The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help locating a woman missing since March. According to our news partner KETK, Ashley Lynn Ballenger, 33, is 5’3″ and 130 pounds. She may also go by the last name Pierce. Ashley has brown hair and blue eyes, has a Hello Kitty tattoo on her thigh and scorpion tattoo on her back. She was last seen on March 10 in Longview. TEDC annual members meeting to be held virtually

TYLER — The Tyler Economic Development Council is preparing for their annual meeting. This year the gathering will be done virtually for members July 13. East Texas shooting under investigation

VAN ZANDT COUNTY – Two people were injured, two others have been taken into custody following a shooting in Van Zandt County late Wednesday night. According to our news partner KETK, deputies were responding to a shots fired report in the area of FM 198 and FM 1651, just south of Canton. When they arrived on the scene, they found the two victims and applied emergency first aid. One victim was flown to Dallas while the other victim was sent to a Tyler hospital.Two suspects were located a short time later, and are being held at the Van Zandt County Detention Center. The Sheriff’s Department said more information will be released as it becomes available.

Texas resumes executions after 5-month delay due to pandemic

HUNTSVILLE (AP) – A Texas inmate has been put to death for fatally shooting an 82-year-old man nearly three decades ago. That ends a five-month delay of executions in the nation’s busiest capital punishment state because of the coronavirus pandemic. Billy Joe Wardlow received a lethal injection Wednesday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the 1993 killing of Carl Cole at Cole’s East Texas home. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to stop the 45-year-old man’s execution. Wardlow was the first Texas inmate to be executed since Feb. 6. He was the second inmate in the U.S. to be put to death since the country began to reopen.

Multiple road and lane closures for Seal Coat project

TYLER — Wednesday marked the beginning of several new seal coat work projects across Tyler. The work will involve multiple roadways through August 21. In a news brief, leaders encouraged drivers to expect temporary lane closures, road closures and traffic delays. Drivers are encouraged to find an alternative route and to pay attention to all traffic and construction signs. Door hangars will be placed on residents doors affected by the project. TYLER — NET Health has confirmed the first death in Anderson County related to the coronavirus. The individual is a 76 year-old male that lived in Palestine. There were 16 new positive cases of COVID-19 confirmed by public and commercial laboratories, bringing total numbers to 194. Rangerettes name newest members for upcoming year

KILGORE — The Kilgore College Rangerettes announced the 32 newest members to the infamous high kicking squad. The announcement was made Wednesday after an abbreviated version of “tryout week” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 80 hopefuls that tried out for a position on the 81st Rangerette line. Smith County Sheriff’s Office seeking assistance

TYLER — Smith County Deputies are looking for help in identifying those responsible for scattering caltrop devices. The devices have been located on I-20 from 69 in Smith County to FM 314 in Van Zandt County. The gear is about three inches in size and the welded rebar is sharpened at every point and painted black. Tyler man sentenced in family abuse case

TYLER — A Tyler man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison. According to our news partner KETK, Ronnie Lee Rinehart, 34, came home from work last November and became aggressive towards his wife and their kids. Rinehart tied them up and pulled a knife on his family. The wife was able to free herself and began to fight Rinehart off. TYLER — NET Health reported 250 new people testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday in Smith County. George Roberts told KTBB on Wednesday, “Fortunately hospital numbers at this moment are manageable. Hospitals locally are working hard to try to take care of folks who come into their organizations. Over time they have learned techniques for helping people that are hospitalized for COVID-19. We’ve improved on our Personal Protection Equipment, we didn’t have that at first. Our lab testing capability has gone up dramatically. TYLER — The Texas State Fair canceled the upcoming season on Tuesday. The East Texas State Fair President and CEO John Sykes told KTBB on Wednesday, “If we are able to pull it off it will definitely look a little different and be just as fun, but we have also been paying for close attention to the CDC guidelines, NET Health guidelines, and the State Department of Health on what we could do to have a community celebration. Campers and staff test positive for coronavirus at Pine Cove

FLINT — Pine Cove Christian Camp has suspended camps following positive cases of COVID-19. According to our news partner KETK, Pine Cove in Flint, has five different camps there, based on age. The organization says the current camp is operational, but that some sessions have been canceled out of an abundance of caution. To date, Pine Cove has had eight staff members and nine campers test positive for COVID-19. The camp has had 8,500 campers and summer staff take part this year. Former ETCIL head pleads guilty to stealing $500K

TYLER –The former head of the East Texas Center for Independent Living admitted to making 369 cash withdrawls totaling $118,000, according to court documents from Tuesday. Rottab also admitted to using ETCIL’s corporate credit card, totaling debits of $526,000 in federal funds that were intended for clients. Jessica Rottab, 33, awaits sentencing later this fall. There will also be an unspecified fine attached to the deal. The amount for the fine was not revealed during the hearing, but federal law allows for up to $250,000 or two times the amount gained from the crime.

Lecture series continues Thursday in Gregg County

LONGVIEW — The Gregg County Historical Museum’s free summer lecture series continues Thursday. According to a brief from the organization, Ellen Gordon and Lynette Goodson are scheduled to speak on the “Restoration of the Rucker-Campbell House.” The home was constructed in 1872 by Asa Rucker who owned a large saw mill. The house was originally built in a Beaux Arts style and was converted to a Queen Anne Victorian in 1903. After this conversion three additions were done to the house over the years.
