Protesters gather at impeached South Korean president’s residence, as arrest warrant nears expiration
(SEOUL) -- Thousands of South Korean citizens were gathering on Sunday near impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol's residence a day before an arrest warrant for him expires.
Protesters from both sides -- one calling the warrant invalid or illegal and the other shouting for arrest -- have occupied the wide four-lane road in a normally quiet neighborhood, blocking all traffic, in freezing temperatures and snow.
The effort to detain Yoon came after a South Korean court issued an arrest and search warrant on Dec. 31 over his short-lived imposition of martial law, ABC News confirmed. Yoon has been suspended from his position since Dec. 14.
The warrant is valid until Jan. 6, Yonhap reported, meaning investigators hoping to serve it would have to attempt to detain the president again by Monday.
Yoon declared martial law in a televised speech on Dec. 3. The president said the measure was necessary due to the actions of the country's liberal opposition, the Democratic Party, which he accused of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government.
Animosity has been sky-high between the two sides, after over 100 investigators from the CIO anti-corruption agency and the police retreated from the residence after a tense standoff with the presidential security service.
Yoon's die-hard supporters have been camping on the street vowing to protect him from "pro-North Korean forces about to steal away the presidency." Anti-Yoon protesters who are backing of the opposition party claim that Yoon must be jailed for insurrection.
Arrest warrant questioned
Many law experts question the validity of the warrant, which specified that certain key provisions of South Korea's Criminal Procedure Act should be excluded, which meant the police could search the military and government-classified presidential residence.
This court order is widely seen as a first-ever and as being highly irregular, along with being criticized by some as being outside the limits of the judiciary's authority, violating the principles of separation of powers.
Typical search warrants include clear parameters of space, time and items to retrieve but excluding the application of legal provisions entirely is unprecedented, experts say.
Yoon's declaration of martial law had sparked protests, and hours after the declaration, the National Assembly voted to demand that the president lift the martial law order. A majority of parliament -- all 190 members who were present, out of the 300-person body -- voted to lift the decree -- requiring that it then be lifted, under the South Korean constitution.
Following the National Assembly's vote, Yoon said he withdrew the troops that had been deployed to carry out martial law and "will lift martial law as soon as we have a quorum in the cabinet." The State Council then convened to vote to officially lift it.
The country's Democratic Party called on Yoon to resign following what it called the "fundamentally invalid" declaration of martial law. Without Yoon resigning, the opposition party worked to enact impeachment proceedings against the president.
Yoon has been suspended from his position since Dec. 14, when the National Assembly voted for his impeachment in a 204-85 vote.
Presidential security service facing charges
While politicians and lawyers argue heatedly over the validity of the warrant in higher courts, the Presidential Security Service has found itself in the limelight.
The CIO has been leading a joint investigation with police and prosecutors, but say detaining Mr. Yoon would be "virtually impossible" as long as he is protected by the security team.
CIO and the opposition party are seeking charges against the head of the president's security team for obstruction of justice after the police were blocked from entering the residence on Friday.
The security team formed a barricade comprising about 10 buses and vehicles, at one point forming a human chain of about 200 officers to block access, according to CIO.
The opposition has criticized the president's security team as being over-excessive and summoned the chiefs and deputy chiefs. The Presidential Security Service defied the order, citing that this is not the time to leave their positions.
"Some media and political circles are saying that the Presidential Security Service is a private soldier (to President Yoon)," Park Chong-Jun, Head of Presidential Security Service, said in a video press release. "I can't help but feel terrible and sad as the presidential security officer".
He added that fake news reports of him ordering to fire with live ammunition are "absurd claims," there was no violence on Saturday, and that they should not be forced to be associated with political ideology.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warns of threats after New Orleans attack
(WASHINGTON) -- In an interview Sunday morning on ABC's "This Week," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned of a "very difficult threat landscape" in the wake of the New Orleans truck attack.
"We have not only the persistent threat of foreign terrorism -- that, of course, created the Department of Homeland Security -- but we have adverse nation-states, and for the past 10 years, we've seen a significant increase in what we term 'homegrown violent extremism,'" Mayorkas told anchor George Stephanopoulos. "It is a very difficult threat landscape, and it is why that we as a community -- not just the federal government, but state and local officials and residents -- need to be alert to it and take the precautions necessary to avoid violence from occurring."
Mayorkas emphasized that, despite immigration being the department's "highest responsibility," the New Orleans attack was unrelated to issues at the border.
"The assailant who perpetrated the terrorist attack in New Orleans was born in the United States, raised in the United States, and served in our armed forces," he said. "It is not an issue of the border."
Mayorkas said he has been in touch with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
âI have spoken with Governor Noem a number of times, including on New Year's Day and immediately thereafter, with respect to the horrific terrorist attack, and we have spoken substantively about the measures that we take, and I am incredibly devoted to a smooth and successful transition to the success of Governor Noem should she be confirmed as the Secretary of Homeland Security," he said.
Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, who appeared on "This Week" after Mayorkas, warned of a resurgence of ISIS activity that he said "concerns me greatly."
McCaul advised the Trump administration to be wary of attacks by those who become radicalized online, urging officials to "pay attention to the social media and connect the dots before these events happen."
"You really have two types of threats. One is operational, the other one is inspired attacks radicalized over the internet," McCaul said. "They're both equally lethal, and they need to be focused on to stop it."

DALLAS (AP) â Jordan McCloud threw for 307 yards and a touchdown, Lincoln Pare ran for a 73-yard touchdown with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter and Texas State held off North Texas 30-28 on Friday night in the First Responder Bowl.
Texas State (8-5) secured eight wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1981-82. North Texas (6-7) was seeking its first bowl win since the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Pare carried 21 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns. His first score, from 1-yard out, capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes to give Texas State a 23-14 lead midway through the third quarter.
Neither team scored again until Makenzie McGill’s short TD run got North Texas within 23-21 with 3:20 left. Two plays later, Pare raced for his long score and Texas State made the extra point for a nine-point lead.
North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker answered with a 70-yard run with 1:49 left to get within two points again. The Mean Green got the ball back with 40 seconds left at their 8-yard line. Touchdown Tommy! Montana State’s Mellott wins Walter Payton Award as top FCS offensive player
FRISCO, Texas (AP) â Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott won the Walter Payton Award as the Football Championship Subdivision offensive player of the year Saturday night, two days before the top-ranked Bobcats face North Dakota State in the title game.
Called Touchdown Tommy, the speedy Mellott edged North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller and Southern Utah running back Targhee Lambson in voting announced at the FCS Awards Banquet.
The first Montana State winner of the award, Mellott had 147 points, receiving 16 first-place votes. Miller followed with 131 with 14 first-place votes and Lambson had 115 with five first-place votes.
âVery humbling moment,â Mellott said. âIâm very, very honored.”
Mellott has led Big Sky champion Montana State to a 15-0 record. The senior from Butte, Montana, topped The Associated Press FCS All-America team and was the Walter Camp FCS Player of the Year. He leads the division in passing efficiency and points responsible for.
âItâs a surreal moment for sure,â Mellott said. âThree years ago I was on the sideline after being injured in the national championship game, and I was talking on the mic to the quarterback coach at the time, Coach (Taylor) Housewright, and he said, `If you donât become the Walter Payton Award winner, we failed you.â So, I think itâs just a testament to what weâve done as a program.â
Montana State and North Dakota State are set to meet Monday night at Toyota Stadium. Bobcats coach Brent Vigen received the Eddie Robinson Award as the coach of the year.
Central Arkansas defensive end David Walker won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player.

Ravens wrap up the AFC North with a 35-10 rout of Cleveland; Jackson surpasses 4,000 yards passing
BALTIMORE (AP) â The road to a division title was bumpy for the Baltimore Ravens, who started 0-2, faced a schedule packed with playoff teams and had to rally from a two-game deficit with four to play.
Having overcome all that, Lamar Jackson is looking ahead to the most important challenges of all â in the postseason.
âI’m focused on the wild-card game, I’m not going to lie to you,â Jackson said. âI’m cool with what’s going on today. I’m cool, don’t get me wrong, but my mind’s on something else.â
Jackson threw two touchdown passes, and the Ravens won the AFC North for the second straight season, clinching the division with a 35-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
Now the Ravens (12-5) will try to reach the Super Bowl for the first time with Jackson. They open the playoffs at home against either the Los Angeles Chargers or Pittsburgh Steelers. Baltimore was two games behind the Steelers in the division before closing with four consecutive victories.
Cleveland (3-14) ended a dreadful season with six straight losses. Both Bailey Zappe and Dorian Thompson-Robinson took snaps at quarterback in the finale. Neither could move the ball much, and Zappe had an interception returned 26 yards for a touchdown by rookie Nate Wiggins for the game’s first points.
The biggest concern coming out of this game for the Ravens was the health of Pro Bowl receiver Zay Flowers, who left in the second quarter with a right knee injury.
Jackson threw TD passes to Mark Andrews in the second quarter and Rashod Bateman in the third, finishing a spectacular statistical season that might be good enough to earn him a third MVP award. Jackson finished the season with 4,172 yards passing, 41 touchdown passes and four interceptions. He became the first quarterback to reach 4,000 yards passing with 40 TD passes and four or fewer interceptions.
Jackson also finished the season with 915 yards rushing, becoming the first player to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for at least 800. His passer rating of 119.6 wasn’t quite high enough to break the single-season record of 122.5 held by Aaron Rodgers.
Zappe threw for 170 yards with two interceptions. His 16-yard scoring pass to Jordan Akins made it 21-10 in the fourth, but the Ravens answered with 70-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry.
Henry, who turned 31 on Saturday, added a 43-yard scoring run late in the fourth. He finished the season with 1,921 yards rushing and a franchise-record 16 touchdowns on the ground.
Cleveland has now gone 28 consecutive games without allowing a 300-yard passer. Jackson finished 16 of 32 for 217 yards.
âI respect this game, these players do. Itâs a privilege to play, itâs a privilege to coach,â said Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, whose team was a 20-point underdog shortly before kickoff according to BetMGM. âIf theyâre keeping score, weâre going to compete to the end.â
Garrett shut out
Cleveland’s Myles Garrett entered the game tied for the NFL lead with 14 sacks, but although the Browns pressured Jackson at times, nobody could sack him. Garrett did have a tackle for loss.
Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson, who also came into the day with 14, moved ahead of Garrett with an early sack in the Bengals’ game against Pittsburgh on Saturday night.
âLamar is a very difficult quarterback to sack, but Myles played the run and battled,â Stefanski said.
Hefty highlight
Ravens defensive lineman Michael Pierce, listed at a rotund 355 pounds, picked off a pass late in the fourth â his first interception in nine NFL seasons. He had some room to run but gave himself up with a fairly nimble slide before being mobbed by teammates.
âThe most amazing play in NFL history right there,â coach John Harbaugh said.
Tested
Although the Ravens finished against the last-place Browns, Harbaugh said they should be well prepared for the postseason. In fact, unless Miami snags the final wild card, Baltimore will have already faced every other team in the AFC playoff field.
âSame level of competition that weâve been playing against,” Harbaugh said. “Weâve played all the teams in the playoffs.â
Injuries
Cleveland DT Mike Hall Jr. was carted off with a knee injury in the third quarter. … Browns CB Mike Ford Jr. injured his forearm. … Cleveland CB Martin Emerson Jr. injured an ankle.
Up next
Baltimore’s postseason opener could feature a coaching matchup between Harbaugh and his brother, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh. Or perhaps a divisional clash between the Ravens and Steelers.
Cleveland can look ahead to the draft after the team’s quarterback situation appeared as unstable as ever this season.

Steelers look toward playoffs after finishing regular season on 4-game skid with loss to Bengals
PITTSBURGH — Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers donât want to talk about the past with the playoff approaching.
The Steelers finished the regular season on a four-game losing streak after a fourth-quarter rally fell short, as Cincinnati kept its playoff hopes alive with a 19-17 victory Saturday night.
âI think the best thing we can do is get ready for the playoffs,â Wilson said. âItâs a new season. Thatâs the only thing that really matters anymore at this point.â
Pittsburgh locked up a playoff berth weeks ago. The Steelers are the third team in NFL history to enter the playoffs on a four-game skid.
âWe need to play winning football and weâre not doing that right now,â linebacker T.J. Watt said. âWe need to wipe the slate clean. Weâre in the tournament now and we need to play better football.â
The Steelers lost their grip on the AFC North and now need the Las Vegas Raiders to beat the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday to avoid a trip to face rival Baltimore, the AFC North champion, in the opening round of the playoffs. If the Chargers lose, Pittsburgh will travel to Houston in the first round.
âObviously, us winning wouldâve helped us in some form or fashion,â Wilson said. âBut at the end of the day, when you go into the playoffs, everybodyâs 0-0 and you have to beat everybody anyway. It has been a tough few weeks. That has to be our focus right now.â
Pittsburghâs defense took a significant step back in December and gave up more than 400 yards a game during the first three losses in the streak. On Saturday, Burrow and the Bengals put up 314 yards of total offense.
Pittsburgh finished with 193 yards, many in the fourth quarter with the offense desperately trying to rally. Wilson completed just one pass in the third quarter as Cincinnati dominated time of possession by 16 minutes. He finished 17 of 31 for 148 yards with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth.

Sonny Smart, father of Georgia coach, dies after Sugar Bowl fall
Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s father, Sonny, died early Saturday morning after suffering complications from hip surgery he underwent following a fall in New Orleans before the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the school announced. He was 76.
Sonny Smart was a longtime high school football coach in Alabama and Georgia.
In a statement, the University of Georgia said he died at 12:15 a.m. ET Saturday while surrounded by his wife, Sharon, and their three children: Karl, Kirby and Kendall.
“Sonny fell while walking during the day on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip,” the school said. “He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose. He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries.”
Kirby Smart spent part of New Year’s Day with his father at the hospital after the Sugar Bowl was pushed back to Thursday because of a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in which a pickup truck driver killed 14 people and injured dozens more.
The Georgia coach returned to the hospital shortly after the Bulldogs’ 23-10 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP quarterfinal Thursday.
In the statement, the Smart family expressed their gratitude to the Ochsner Medical Center staff in New Orleans.
“Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day,” the statement said. “The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength, and guidance.”
South Carolina coach Shane Beamer offered his condolences on X, saying his “heart hurts for the Smart family.”
Sonny Smart played football at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a football coach at Holtville High School in Alabama and led the baseball team to a state title in 1982. He later coached at Bainbridge High in Georgia, where Kirby Smart played safety for him, and Rabun County High in north Georgia.
“He’s taught me so much just about the way you handle things, the right way, the wrong way,” Kirby Smart said of his father in January 2023. “Control the controllables. The moment’s never too big if you’re prepared. And I always watched the way he prepared our teams and our staff in high school.
“He was a very wise man, a man of few words. I tried to follow his mantra as a coach. I’ve certainly evolved from going to coach for other people, but a lot of my core beliefs came from the way he ran our programs in high school.”
Michigan QB Davis Warren says he tore ACL in bowl game
ByJAKE TROTTER
Michigan quarterback Davis Warren revealed Saturday that he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the Wolverines’ 19-13 victory over Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31.
“Can’t wait to battle to be back on the field with my guys in AA [Ann Arbor] and go blue!” Warren, who left the bowl in the third quarter with the injury, wrote on social media.
Warren started nine games, including wins over Ohio State and the Crimson Tide to end the season. He finished with 1,199 passing yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions.
When Warren recovers, he’ll have stout competition to keep the starting job.
The Wolverines have the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit in quarterback Bryce Underwood on the way, plus Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, who has thrown for 8,245 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career.
