TYLER — After five years, Jack Ryan’s Steak and Chophouse in downtown Tyler announced that it will not reopen following the coronavirus shutdown. One of the owners of People’s Petroleum Building, Garnett Brookshire told KTBB on Thursday, “I can’t give you any details just because we haven’t finalized our plans…we hope what is coming as soon as this fall would be another great upscale steakhouse option for the downtown and Tyler community.” An announcement is expected this summer. TFD responds to early morning fire in Tyler

TFD responds to early morning fire in TylerTYLER — Tyler firefighters answered the call of an overnight vehicle fire early Thursday. Fire Marshall, Paul Findley said in a press brief, the department responded to East Texas Pool Service on Loop 323, just after 2:00 a.m. They found a vehicle parked beneath an overhang of the back side of the building, fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to move the vehicle, preventing further damage to the business. All units, from the two alarm fire, were cleared from the scene around 4 a.m. Investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.

Edmonson sworn in to fill unexpired term at KC

KILGORE — Kilgore College announced Wednesday afternoon, their newest board member, Josh Edmonson, has been sworn in as a member of the Board of Trustees. Edmonson, of Kilgore, will fill the unexpired term of Karol Pruett for the Central Zone, with the term set to expire in May of 2021. At that time, an election will be held. Pruett announced her resignation at the February board meeting; however, by law, she remained a trustee until the board appointed Edmonson as her replacement.

Hit the Bricks this Saturday in downtown Tyler

TYLER — Hit the Bricks is scheduled for Saturday in Tyler. According to a media brief from the city on Thursday, all restaurants and stores will be open to the public. Use of force policies updated by Tyler City Police

TYLER — The Tyler Police Department is clarifying the use-of-force and code-of-conduct regulations, department wide. On Wednesday, Tyler Police Chief Jimmy Toler told KTBB, “If you see someone else (another officer) committing a violation of our policies, you have a duty to act and you also have to report those to a supervisor. The duty to intervene policy, is a clearly written policy, which 90 percent of it was already covered in our general orders, but this will be a stand alone policy that talks about an officer’s duty to intervene either verbally or physically if they see a violation, whether it’s an excessive use of force, or some type of unethical behavior, that they would actually intervene to prevent it from happening.” Continue reading Use of force policies updated by Tyler City Police

Athens woman faces murder and aggravated assault charges

Athens woman faces murder and aggravated assault chargesJACKSONVILLE — A February incident in Jacksonville, has an Athens woman arrested on charges of murder of an unborn child. According to our news partner KETK, Keuina Roshell Paul, 25, also faces aggravated assault charges. Paul was arrested Wednesday in Athens. The mother of the child was seriously injured, but did survive. Sources say Paul, allegedly, hit the woman intentionally, in a Whataburger parking lot, just after 2:30 a.m. Feb. 16.

TYLER — The city of Tyler announced the 7th annual #SchoolIsCool event on Wednesday. This years backpack distribution is set for August 6 and is hosted by Tyler Area Business Education Council, Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Area Partnership 4 Education and the city of Tyler. Times will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Harvey Convention Center with a goal of passing out 2,000 backpacks with supplies to enrolled students from Pre-K to 12th grade. Tyler tax allocations down 20%, Longview off 23% as State Comptroller distributes $690 million state wide

AUSTIN — Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $690 plus million in local sales tax allocations for June. That number is down 11.5 % from allocations in June 2019. Tyler will see $2,932,568.12 down 20.5% from this time last year and Longview will receive $2,182,633.37, down 23.19% from this time last year. Portion of West MLK Jr. Boulevard closed for maintenance

TYLER — Union Pacific Railroad is carrying out track maintenance this week. The work will require West MLK Jr. Boulevard to be closed to through traffic at the Border Avenue crossing through Saturday evening. The cross streets between Glenwood Boulevard and Border Avenue on West MLK Jr. Boulevard will be open. Detour signs will be in place to direct drivers around the crossing.

East Texas Communities Foundation Awards Over $294,000 in Scholarships

TYLER — The East Texas Communities Foundation awarded nearly $300 thousand dollars in scholarships to high school and college students. The group announced Tuesday, that $294 thousand was distributed to East Texans for the 2020-21 school year. Scholarship amounts range from $500-$5,000 per student originating from 70 different scholarship funds at ETCF. Discovery Science Place announces limited reopening plan

TYLER — The Discovery Science Place announced plans to reopen to the public after concerns of COVID-19 forced its closure. On Tuesday, Executive Director, Chris Rasure told KTBB, “We have got a lot of new procedures in place to try and maximize everyone’s health and keep everyone safe. One of the first things that people will notice is that they are going to be required to wash their hands before they enter the museum. TYLER — Jury trials across the state are likely delayed until August 1 due to concerns over the coronavirus. According to our news partner KETK, the move was made by the Texas Supreme Court and was made available by Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran Tuesday morning. Firefighters respond to late night structure fire

Firefighters respond to late night structure fireTYLER — Tyler firefighters answered a late night call for a structure fire Monday night on Bellaire Dr. Arriving units reported heavy fire and smoke and sounded a second alarm bringing additional resources. One occupant was transported to a local hospital for minor burns. Investigators determined the person was filling a portable generator with gasoline inside the home. A fire flash ignited the room, after starting the generator, causing burns to the subject. The American Red Cross was notified for assistance for the resident.

New experimental heart procedure performed at Christus Trinity Mother Frances

TYLER — CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances is the first hospital in the region to try an experimental heart procedure that could prove to be lifesaving. East Texas Food Bank continues drive-thru distributions

EAST TEXAS — The East Texas Food Bank will distribute emergency food boxes and/or fresh items such as produce (pending availability) at drive-thru distributions. The distributions are open to anyone and there are no eligibility requirements. A verbal declaration of name, address and income will be asked, but there is no ID or paperwork required. To pick up a box for someone else, a hand-written note must be provided with the person’s name, address, permission for you to pick it up and their signature. The distributions are drive-thru only and walkups will not be accepted. Cecil Avenue closed for pipe repair

TYLER — Cecil Avenue will be closed through Friday to replace a drainage pipe that crosses Cecil Avenue just North of West 24th Street. The construction began on Monday. The road will be closed to thru traffic. Northbound traffic will be detoured to West Mims Street and to North Englewood Avenue. Southbound drivers will need to detour to Northridge Drive, to North Englewood Avenue and to West Mims Street. The City of Tyler is asking drivers to exercise caution in the area and follow all traffic detours and signs.

Lee Principal Dr. Dan Crawford told KTBB, “A lot of the parents of the kids that I have right now at Lee had him as principal and they said he had an ability to make tough decisions, but they all still really loved him. Palestine man charged in weekend murder in Palestine

PALESTINE — One man is dead and another is listed in serious condition following a stabbing Sunday Morning. Officers responded to a call and found Jesus Vigil-Limon, 51, of Palestine, dead with lacerations to his head and body. Jose Vigil-Limon, 47, of Palestine. was transported to a hospital with severe stab related injuries. He said he was attacked by Richard Quinones, 50, of Palestine. Witnesses said Quinones was at the residence earlier in the day and was known to the victims.

TYLER — On Monday, Kona Ice offered free shaved ice at Winter Park. This is part of the Tyler Parks and Rec Summer Feeding program. The shaved ice was free to the kids receiving lunches, courtesy of J. Chad Parker LLC. The cool treat will be offered again on Wednesday at Glass Recreation Center, and Friday at Gassaway Park. The Summer Feeding Program is a free program providing lunches to kids 18 years old and under through the East Texas Food Bank. Peterson vows to take a knee during national anthem

WASHINGTON — Former Palestine Wildcat and current Washington Redskins NFL running back Adrian Peterson said Sunday, he will kneel during the national anthem this season. In an interview with the Houston Chronicle, Peterson said he doesn’t plan to be the only player to do so. Peterson’s comments come on the heels of Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who said players were “disrespecting the flag” by kneeling during the anthem. Brees apologized for those comments. KCAEL inducts 11 students into NAEHS

KILGORE — The Kilgore College Adult Education and Literacy program inducted 11 students from across East Texas into the National Adult Education Honor Society. Like many ceremonies, this years annual event was cancelled due to the cornavirus outbreak. Selections were made from more than 1,000 students enrolled in adult education programs (ESL, AEL, literacy and HSE) from Gregg, Upshur, and Rusk counties during the 2019-20 program year. TYLER — Deputies with Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to a runaway report in the Flint area on May 17. Katie Elizabeth Miller, 17, left her residence and did not return home. Miller was last seen with Shane Lee Toon Jr., 24 of Tyler. Toon drives a black Chevy Tahoe, with a white hood and a purple rear bumper. Woman charged in weekend stabbing

LONGVIEW — Longview police have arrested a suspect wanted in a weekend stabbing. According to our news partner KETK, police responded to an assault call around 3:30 Saturday afternoon on Culver Street. The unnamed victim was found with a stab wound in the abdominal area. Lacey Steddum, 38, of Longview, admitted to the crime and told officers where to locate the knife. Steddum was booked into the Gregg County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
