TYLER — Assistance may be available for some who suffered damage from severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding earlier this year in Smith County. According to a news release, farms and ranches suffering damage may be eligible for assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) administered by the Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office if the damage:
– Will be so costly to rehabilitate that Federal assistance is or will be needed to return the land to productive agricultural use
– Is unusual and is not the type that would recur frequently in the same area
– Affects the productive capacity of the farmland
– Will impair or endanger the land. Read the rest of this entry »

TYLER — Representative Louie Gohmert, of Tyler, released a statement today after Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation from the position of Speaker of the House. Boehner said he plans to step down from the United States Congress at the end of October. Gohmert wrote:
“America is at an incredibly perilous time in our history; we need bold leadership more than ever, and the Speaker now has graciously given us that opportunity.â€
“Due in part to the massive shift in power away from the most accountable representatives of the people to a President and five judges, we have needed leadership with vision for the future that did not continue the downhill slide. A goal to simply slow the losses of liberty and opportunity is not what is needed.†Read the rest of this entry »
What you are experiencing is an atmospheric phenomenon called “tropospheric propagation.” It happens when warm air aloft overruns cooler air on the surface. The result will be to set up conditions wherein VHF radio signals, such as those in the FM radio band, are able to travel well beyond their normal coverage limits. The phenomenon is referred to colloquially as “ducting,” because what in effect happens is that an atmospheric “duct” opens which then carries a VHF signal past the horizon and allows it to follow the curve of the Earth.
What you are hearing is not a weak signal from us. What you are hearing is a strong interfering signal from a distant FM station. Where you are, you are likely hearing KLAK 97.5 FM from Sherman, Texas. Move around the area and depending on where you are, just about any FM station on the dial could be receiving interference. It’s positively maddening and it is, at this time, about the worst I’ve ever seen it and I’ve been around a long time.
The bad news is that it’s really bad right now. The good news is that it’s temporary. Generally, the effect lessens as the day goes on.
It will abate when the enormous high pressure ridge that Dr. Bob Peters keeps telling us about either dissipates or moves off.
Until then, we regret the inconvenience.
Thank you for listening.

LONGVIEW — A Kilgore man has been handed a 15 year prison sentence for the death of his brother nearly two years ago. Jeffrey Allen Miller, 30, had admitted he had stabbed his brother, Jeremy Dewayne Miller, 27. He has been sentenced to prison by state district judge David Brabham. Sheriff’s deputies were called to 642 McQueen Road on June 24th, 2013. They found Jeremy with a serious stab wound to his abdomen. He died about an hour later at Longview’s Good Shepherd Medical Center. His brother was arrested in the case four days later.
EDGEWOOD — Many people in Edgewood, in Van Zandt County, find what appear to be recruiting flyers in front of their homes. But the drive doesn’t seem to be having the intended effect. The flyers are sealed in plastic bags along with rocks, and tossed into yards and driveways. Kathy Baker says she’s glad she found one before her eight-year-old son saw the message. Baker says, “This mentality just disgusts me.” The flyers appear to be recruiting messages for the Ku Klux Klan and direct people to a website and a Quinlan post office box. Baker adds, “Some people think that when you live in a small town, that it means that you’re small-minded — and that’s not true.” Similar flyers appeared in the area about this time last year.
LONGVIEW — A teen reported missing in Gregg County last month may have been spotted in El Paso County. The Gregg County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page says runaway Paiglynn Raymond, 15, may have been spotted at a Love’s Travel Center in Anthony, Texas by a truck driver. She was wearing the same type of clothing, blue hoodie, jeans and a gray backpack, but had braided sandy blond hair and a nose ring. She told the truck driver that her name was Paige and she needed a ride to Colorado. Read the rest of this entry »

TYLER — Texas Senator John Cornyn was on the UT Tyler campus Friday meeting with local leaders to discuss and to learn more about the university’s initiatives in the area of primary education, particularly as it pertains to science, technology, engineering and math. Sen. Cornyn made a statement to members of the local media regarding the importance of those initiatives, saying that education must be pursued in such a way as to avoid the danger of having acquired skills become obsolete. A portion of his remarks may be seen in the video below.
During the event, KTBB’s Paul Gleiser asked Sen. Cornyn to address the U.S. response to the terrorist organization ISIS. His response is in the video below.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX 28) have each introduced bills in their respective houses of Congress that they together are calling the “Humane Act.” The bill is intended to close a loophole in a 2008 law that treats illegal immigrants from other countries differently than illegal immigrants from Mexico. According to Senator Cornyn, the law requires immigrants from countries other than Mexico to be released to a relative in the United States pending a hearing on a date in the future as set forth in a notice to appear. Most of those appearance obligations are never kept by the illegal immigrants, according to Senator Cornyn, resulting in de facto legal admission into the country. The bill that Sen. Cornyn and Rep. Cuellar have introduced would effectively modify that 2008 law so as to require detention of illegal immigrants, including unaccompanied children, and a speedy trial to determine the disposition of each case. The bill faces stiff headwinds in the Democratically-controlled Senate according to Sen. Cornyn.
KTBB’s Paul Gleiser spoke with Sen. Cornyn. That interview is available below.
