\"\"TYLER — Smith County is getting a new mass notification system that will alert the public in times of local emergencies or disasters. The Smart 911 system will simultaneously send out texts, emails and telephone calls in both English and Spanish. Smith County residents who were signed up for the old notification system, CodeRED, may have received text messages or emails notifying them that their CodeRED service will expire on February 15. They are being asked to sign up for the new Smart 911 emergency alert system at http:\/\/rave.smithtx.co<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sign up is fast and easy and is easier to use than the old service, Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said. Cities and counties who have used CodeRED were notified recently by the East Texas Council of Governments that the old system was expiring and a new vendor, Rave Mobile Safety, would begin providing the Smart 911 citizen emergency alerts service this month. Rave is a mass notification system that allows Smith County Emergency Managers to broadcast important information during times of local emergency or disaster. In addition, citizens may opt in to receive weather notifications as they are issued from the National Weather Service. When signing up for the free service, you will also have the option of choosing to receive notifications for several areas, including counties and cities. Smart 911 notifications can include: tornadoes and storm events, drinking water contaminations, utility outages, evacuation notices and routes, missing persons, fires or floods, bomb threats, hostage or active shooter situations, and chemical spills or gas leaks. Users also have the opportunity to provide personal information like medical conditions, home description and pet information so first responders have information on how best to respond to your needs in an emergency situation.
