He has served as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for seven years and assistant chair for two years. Gray joined the UT Tyler faculty in 1998 as a professor of chemistry. He  has received numerous awards, including Piper Professorship of Teaching Excellence, Regents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Outstanding Teaching Award and Chancellor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Outstanding Teaching Award.
