Barber will be collecting checks all day Wednesday at a drive-thru tent he will set up in the parking lot of the Cotton Belt Building at Front and Glenwood. Barber will be set up outside from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 31 on the Glenwood side of the parking lot to accept check-only payments. Drivers should look for a tent and banner telling them where to go.

Barber says this is the county’s first time to offer a drive-thru payment option. Officials say a line of people is often wrapped around the building before the office even opens on the deadline day. Residents have until January 31 to pay their property taxes to avoid a 7 percent penalty for late payments. If making your payment at the drive-thru, you’re asked to bring your bill and check in an envelope with your telephone number written on it so employees can call if they have any questions. They will process the payments and mail the taxpayer a receipt within a few days, Barber said. Taxpayers can also go into the Cotton Belt to make payments through check, cash or money order, as well as the branch offices at 2616 S. Main St. in Lindale and the Noonday office, at 15405 Highway 155 South. The offices are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Residents are encouraged to go to https://www.smith-county.com/Government/ElectedOfficials/TaxAssessor/PropertyTaxes.aspx and make their payments online. Paying with an e-check is free, while paying with debit or credit cards has a 2.5 percent convenience fee. If mailing in your bill, it must be postmarked by January 31. If you are dropping it in your own mailbox, Barber said it would have to be done by Tuesday, January 30. If you are mailing it on Wednesday, January 31, you must take it to a post office to be postmarked on that day to avoid late penalties. For more information, call 903-590-2920.

TYLER — Smith County Tax Assessor-Collector Gary Barber has added more convenient ways for residents to pay property taxes to meet the January 31 deadline this year, according to a news release from the county.
