\"\"VAN — A 3-year old is okay after being pulled from a well by his grandfather. KETK reports the young boy fell through the concrete cover early Saturday morning in Van. Firefighters say the young boy had walked over the well cover, which is said to have been brittle, when it collapsed on him. The grandfather was nearby and was able to go inside the well and pull the young boy from it. The boy did not need medical attention. Following the scare, the city is asking people to be aware of their surroundings and keep a close eye on well covers. <\/p>\n

Some more detailed advice from officials: <\/p>\n

1. Covered wells aren’t necessarily safe wells.<\/p>\n

2. Please don’t attempt self rescue. Throw the victim a flotation device, or a rope to secure them, but let those trained actually retrieve them. Bad air, crumbling walls, and the inability to get out only compound the difficulty for the rescuers if you add another victim. Van Fire has high angle rescue equipment and trained rope rescue technicians, as do some of the city’s mutual aid partners.<\/p>\n

3. Firefighters have discovered open wells in the woods and fields while fighting grass fires, inside outbuildings at structure fires, in backyards, and everywhere else. Please take time to secure those on your property.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
