It happened around 8:00pm on Cottonwood Road. Killed was Dale Hightower, 53, of Gilmer. Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman Jean Dark says arriving officers heard screaming coming from the residence. She said, when Hightower came outside and pointed a rifle at an Upshur County deputy and a state trooper, the officers shot him. He died at the scene.  A woman found inside the residence was unharmed.
