Gladewater police did not immediately release the name of the driver who was shot and killed early Saturday by a police officer. Gregg County Justice of the Peace James Mathis says the incident began when the officer tried to pull a vehicle over for a traffic stop. Mathis says a chase ensued, then the driver stopped, got out of his vehicle and tried to flee. Mathis says the officer, whose name wasn&#8217;t immediately released, feared for his own safety and shot the driver, who had reached a field. A message left with Gladewater police wasn&#8217;t immediately returned Sunday.
