Robert Ransom, 62, was at the end of his shift Friday when an inmate at the Gregg County Jail became ill. Ransom went to get a defibrillator and then he himself was hit with a deadly heart attack. Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said ransom could have left without helping but it was his nature to help. The inmate survived. Paramedics tried but could not revive Ransom.
