The inmate was housed at the Marvin A. Smith Criminal Justice Facility, a minimum security facility located at 197 Floyd Wingo Drive, north of Kilgore.  Jailer Robert E. Ransom, 62,  and the inmate, were transferred to Good Sheppard Medical Center in Longview for treatment.  Officer Ransom was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the hospital by Justice of the Peace Tim Bryan. The inmate was treated and later returned to the jail. Ranson has been with Gregg County since October, 2005.
