Smith County Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson on Tuesday reported a Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) of 658. Used to determine forest fire potential, the KBDI ranges from 0 to 800. In the past, Smith County has issued a burn ban when the drought index reaches 700, she said.<!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>Weather reports show a chance for rain this weekend, but if conditions remain dry, Ms. McCoy-Wasson said she expects to bring a Burn Ban Declaration to the Commissioners Court on Tuesday, August 16, for approval.  She said firefighters have not seen as many grass fires caused by carelessness as they usually do this time of year. Most fires have been caused by downed trees that hit power lines and tire blowouts. She urged people to continue to be careful when burning, to not leave a fire that has been set and to not throw lit cigarettes out of vehicles when driving.
