\"JEREMY<\/a>SMITH COUNTY — 25-year-old Athens resident Jeremy Robert Lane been arrested in Smith County for a murder in Athens. Officials say the Smith County Sheriff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Office was contacted by Det. James Bonnette from the Athens Police Dept. at 5 p.m. Saturday regarding Lane and a murder that had occurred around 3:00 Saturday morning. Det. Bonnette said the suspect might be found at a location on CR 1100 in Smith County. <\/p>\n

Smith County Sheriff’s Sgt. Darrell Coslin says he responded to the location and found the suspect\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vehicle parked in the roadway in front of the location. Two deputies assisted setting a perimeter. Coslin notified Athens police that they had found the vehicle at the location. Coslin then notified another Smith County sergeant of the situation and asked for assistance in securing the residence. Coslin says Smith County SWAT members responded and were able to take the suspect into custody without incident at 8:05 Saturday evening. Bond on Lane has been set at $1,000,000 on a murder charge.<\/p>\n

According to KETK, Lane was at his friend Dillan Bolton’s house when authorities found him. Bolton said Lane would stay at his house almost every weekend for a couple of years. He said Lane was like a brother and it was “very out of character” for him to do something so violent. Lane had gone over to Bolton’s house after a party. Bolton wasn’t home at the time, but when Bolton got home the next morning around eleven, Lane reportedly told him what had happened.<\/p>\n

According to what Bolton says Lane him, Lane attended a party in Athens with church friends late Friday night. Lane had reportedly gotten very drunk but was ready to drive home. Several people at the party are said to have told him he couldn’t drive since he had been drinking. Lane then reportedly got upset because he lived so close to where the party was and just wanted to leave. The victim grabbed Lane’s keys and it made Lane very mad, according to reports. Lane reportedly told Bolton he had stabbed the victim many times. Bolton said from what Lane told him, it sounded as though the keys had triggered the whole incident. The victim has been identified as Mark Groendyk, 27, of New Jersey.<\/p>\n

Lane left the party and drove to Bolton’s house. Bolton said Lane tried calling him but he didn’t answer the phone because he was at his girlfriend’s house. When Lane showed up at Bolton’s house, Bolton’s stepdad talked with Lane and let him stay the night since he was “acting strange and in bad shape,” according to reports. When Lane was telling Bolton that he killed someone, Bolton thought he was joking, according to Bolton’s account. He thought there was no way his friend could do that. But when Lane got serious with him and asked, “What should I do?” that’s when Bolton said he took him more seriously.<\/p>\n

Bolton had left to go to the gas station when police surrounded his house. When he got back, Bolton said he was pulled over and had weapons pointed to his head. His first thought was where his son was. Bolton’s one-year-old son lives with him and was at the house when Lane was taken in by police. Police said his son was sent to a neighbor across the street. CPS is now involved. Bolton is upset with the situation. He says Lane was always really good with his son and shouldn’t be portrayed as an evil person. Bolton described it as a “wrong place at the wrong time” situation.<\/p>\n

Bolton added that drug tests should be taken because he knows Lane was not in the right state of mind when the killing took place. Bolton says when Lane gets really drunk he will sometimes black out and thinks that is what happened the night of the party. Bolton says Lane was close with his family and was always saying how proud he was of his brother, who is in the military.
