Ted Cruz (R-Texas) Friday announced the hiring of Tyler native Austin Smithson as legislative counsel in his Washington, D.C. office, effective immediately.  According to a news release, Smithson will handle issues such as energy, agriculture, environment, public lands, and transportation.   Smithson previously served as legislative director and legislative counsel for Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas).
