Organizers say the event is intended to provide assistance for prospective college students and their parents to apply for federal financial aid. According to a news release, volunteers will man computer stations at seven Smith County locations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to help individuals complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid (TASFA) and thus become potentially eligible for financial assistance for post-secondary attainment.

Fred Peters, ETHNN education chair, calls the event an outreach to all area high school seniors and their parents, to encourage them to apply for federal aid and help them fund a college education.” He said Super Saturdays have been successful in the Rio Grande Valley and Dallas, and that a similar campaign in Austin has resulted in significant increases in FAFSA completion rates over the past decade. According to Educate Texas, Smith County high schools currently hold about a 45 percent completion rate for FAFSA, compared to a state average of more than 51 percent.

FAFSA Super Saturday is being organized by a FAFSA Task Force composed of ETHNN representatives and local educators, financial aid officers and counselors. FAFSA Super Saturday locations are Arp High School, Brook Hill High School, the Hispanic American Association of East Texas (El Centro Hispano, 1111 E. Erwin), Lindale High School, the Tyler Independent School District Career and Technology Center (Earl Campbell Parkway), the Tyler Public Library and Winona High School. Tyler Junior College, Wiley College, Texas College and The University of Texas at Tyler will provide promotional prizes for drawings at each location, and every person who completes a FAFSA on-site and participates in an exit survey will be eligible to win.

Individuals who want to complete a FAFSA during Super Saturday need not be residents of Smith County and may be students of any high school or home school program. To participate in Super Saturday, students should bring the 2015 tax return of parents and student, and W2 statements. A parent and student must create a user name and a password on the website https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm before the event.

If parents and students have not completed a 2015 tax return, bring all W2 forms and any other documents showing revenue (1099 forms, Social/Security SSI) and a 2014 tax return. Then you can return to the fafsa.ed.gov site to correct the information on the 2015 tax return. If a parent is not present, the student needs to know the dates of birth and the month and year of their parents’ marriage.

TYLER — The East Texas Human Needs Network (ETHNN), the Tyler Area Partnership for Education, Smith County independent school districts and area colleges and universities have partnered to plan the second annual FAFSA Super Saturday on Feb. 27.
