KETK reports residents of Tyler were notified of contaminated water in their region, but are told it is still safe to drink. The city experienced a level of 0.062 mg/l of haloacetic acids, which is 2 parts per billion over the level established by the Environmental Protection Agency. “We are monitoring the situation,” says utilities managing director Gregory Morgan. “We believe that the root cause of the problem is the high rains that we experienced last spring.”

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich posted a warning to Tyler water consumers on her Facebook page. She said the water utilities department is lying to its customers and that the water is not safe for drinking. “The regulation says you’re only required to sample and test the water on a quarterly basis,” says Brockovich’s water quality advisor Robert Bowcock. “What happens the other ya know 89 days of that quarter?” Brockovich also says the city’s chlorine conversion caused the violation. City officials say this is incorrect because the highest levels were found in May, which was three months before the conversion took place. Morgan says the levels found are not posing an immediate risk for consumers.

“If it is a risk it is a chronic risk, which means that any potential health hazards is associated to extended, long period use,” says Morgan. The city will continue to monitor the situation and adjust procedures, but activists say this is not enough. “The pipes, the distribution center in Tyler is full of bacteriological colonies and nitrification and they gotta kill it,” says Bowcock.

TYLER — Tyler Mayor Martin Heines will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday to address recent concerns about the city’s water.
