According to a Smith County news release, the improvements will address the need to increase water line sizes within the Lindale WSC. Smith County is requesting grant funding on behalf of Lindale Rural WSC to assist households located in an area previously served by the Duck Creek WSC. The Duck Creek water system became part of the Lindale Rural WSC two years ago. Since that time, Lindale Rural WSC has spent more than $2 million to upgrade this portion of its system and also completed a STEP project replacing nearly seven miles of water lines.

The public hearing will allow residents an opportunity to discuss the citizen participation plan, the development of local housing and community development needs, the amount of funding available, and the use of funds, according to officials. After the public hearing, the next step will be to submit the grant application. Officials say the county is requesting funding from the Office of Rural Affairs within the Texas Department of Agriculture STEP grant program to replace more than 5 miles of old, deteriorating, and inadequate water lines in a very low-income area of the water system to resolve this critical need. The Lindale Rural Water Supply Corp. is located at 15934 County Road 431 in Lindale and can be reached at 903-882-6822. Smith County Commissioner Terry Phillips said the project will help the citizens in that rural area of the county, upgrading the infrastructure and allowing 10 homes to get water service for the first time.

Lindale Rural WSC committed to replace more than 100 miles of deteriorated and undersized lines within the areas previously served by Duck Creek WSC, according to the news release. Officials say the replacement of these water lines is necessary for the health and safety of county residents. The households within the proposed project area experience extremely low water pressure and almost no water during peak times of usage, according to the release. Officials say the water lines are too small and are therefore unable to provide adequate water supply to meet demand. Numerous leaks cause near-constant service interruptions during the frequent and necessary repairs, according to officials.

In an effort to continue to improve this portion of the system, Lindale Rural WSC has requested that Smith County apply for STEP assistance to provide first-time water service to the aforementioned 10 homes and replace 30,000 linear feet of 1½-inch and 2-inch water line with 6-inch and 8-inch water line. Commissioner Phillips said it is not the first time the county has done this for Lindale Rural WSC and he will be glad to have the public’s input about the issue at the meeting.

LINDALE — A public hearing will be held at 5:15 p.m. today at the Lindale Rural Water Supply Corp. to discuss funding for water improvements through the Small Towns Environment Program (STEP) within the Texas Department of Agriculture.
