\"louie<\/a>TYLER — Representative Louie Gohmert, of Tyler, released a statement today after Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation from the position of Speaker of the House. Boehner said he plans to step down from the United States Congress at the end of October. Gohmert wrote:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153America is at an incredibly perilous time in our history; we need bold leadership more than ever, and the Speaker now has graciously given us that opportunity.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Due in part to the massive shift in power away from the most accountable representatives of the people to a President and five judges, we have needed leadership with vision for the future that did not continue the downhill slide. A goal to simply slow the losses of liberty and opportunity is not what is needed.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153So often, after being elected to Congress, members have the goal drilled into their head that there is nothing nobler than being a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcteam player.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Football and our military are deep passions of mine, but their metaphorical uses in Congress are often inappropriate. For an appropriate use of the sports metaphor, too often \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbeing a team player\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 has disguised the fact that a play has been called that has us running toward the wrong goal line.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153As members of Congress, we should be accountable to our constituents and nation more than any earthly responsibility. For the vast majority, we understand that ultimately we will all kneel accountably before God.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153As Speaker Boehner moves on to a new chapter in his life, I truly wish both him and his family well. I have nothing but best wishes for him, wherever he will be.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153My fervent prayers are with the country at this defining moment.
