In a letter dated June 11, the Texas Division of Emergency Management notified Smith County that it was designated eligible to apply for low-interest emergency disaster loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The loan availability is a result of a Presidential Declaration declared by FEMA for 18 Texas counties, including Smith County. The local Farm Service Agency (USDA Service Center) office will have the details on the program. It is located at 4209 Republic Drive and can be reached at 903-561-2050. The deadline for the loan applications for production and physical losses is February 5, 2016.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a letter dated June 11, 2015, The Texas Division of Emergency Management notified Smith County that it was designated eligible to apply for low-interest emergency disaster loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. <\/p>\n<p>On June 5, President Obama declared 18 counties in Texas as a primary natural disaster area (Presidential Major Disaster Declaration M4223, Amendment 1). This action was based on severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that began on May 4, 2015. Smith, Rusk and Henderson were three of the 18 primary counties. There were also 61 Texas counties named as contiguous counties, where eligible family farmers could qualify for FSA emergency loan assistance. The Secretary of Agriculture notified the administrator of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to immediately make emergency loans available to applicants in Smith County. The local Farm Service Agency (USDA Service Center) office will have the details on the program. It is located at 4209 Republic Drive and can be reached at 903-561-2050.<\/p>\n<p> In a letter dated June 10, Smith County was notified that it was named a contiguous county, along with 34 other Texas counties, in a declaration made by Obama on May 29, Obama also declared seven primary counties, including Van Zandt County, based on severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that began May 4. Those named as contiguous counties will not qualify for FEMA assistance unless specifically declared by FEMA. They will only be eligible for USDA loan consideration.
