According to KETK, just before midnight Sunday, Palestine Police responded to Wal-Mart on Loop 256 in reference to a theft.  Officers were told that a man had stolen beer from the store and fled towards Applebee&#8217;s, also on Loop 256. He was found a short time later in the men&#8217;s restroom of the restaurant. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The subject was escorted out of the restaurant, where officers attempted to identify him,&#8221; said Palestine PD Chief of Police Mike Alexander. &#8220;The subject then displayed a black pistol, and pointed it at officers. Officers attempted to gain control of the subject, but he pulled away and again pointed the weapon at officers, at which time both officers drew their weapons and fired upon the suspect, striking him multiple times.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Upon securing the scene, officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notice of next-of-kin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the initial investigation has revealed that the gun the suspect brandished was a BB gun designed to look like a 9mm handgun, in the rapidly developing situation the officers took appropriate defensive measures in using deadly force against the suspect to stop the threat&#8221;, said Chief Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>Both officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PALESTINE &#8212; The Palestine Police Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating an overnight officer involved shooting which left one person dead.
