Ed Smith announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon. In a statement to the City Commission, Smith said he wanted to devote more time to other business and personal interests. Smith, a native of Marshall, first served on the Commission as both commissioner and mayor from 2000 to 2008. He did not seek re-election in 2008. In May, 2012, Smith was re-elected to the commission and has served as mayor since then. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Smith said, &#8220;It has been my privilege to serve as chairman of the commission for the past several years, and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. Serving in this capacity requires a commitment to devote most of one&#8217;s time in order to give the position the attention it deserves.&#8221; He added, &#8220;I have other business and personal interests to which I would like to devote more of my time. Therefore, I am resigning my position as chairman to be effective upon the commission selecting a new chair at the May 14th meeting, or as soon thereafter at a meeting called for this purpose that a new chair is selected.&#8221; He is recommending that the commission appoint Mayor Pro-Tem Garrett Boersma into his position. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MARSHALL &#8212; Citing personal reasons, the mayor of Marshall has resigned.
