Lee High School is the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers\u2019 Association (NATA) Safe Sports School, 1st Team Award. According to a Tyler ISD news release, the award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment, according to TISD officials.  \u201cTyler Lee is honored to receive this 1st team recognition from NATA and we remain committed to keeping our student athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices and games so they can accomplish their own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship and good health,\u201d said Lee\u2019s athletic trainer, Amy Langley.  <!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>Physical activity is very important for our youth, according to NATA president Jim Thornton, MS, ATC, CES. \u201cThere has been an increase in competitive sports, which unfortunately, are not without risk. Brain injury\/concussion, cardiac arrest, heat illness, exertional sickling, cervical spine fractures and other injuries and illnesses are potentially life-threatening.\u201d Proper planning with proper equipment and personnel is vital to the safety of student athletes today, he notes.<\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve Safe Sport School status athletic programs must do the following:<br \/>\n\u2022\tCreate a positive athletic health care administrative system<br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations<br \/>\n\u2022\tPromote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities<br \/>\n\u2022\tPlan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment<br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tDevelop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions<br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide or facilitate injury intervention<br \/>\n\u2022\tCreate and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan<br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling\/education<br \/>\n\u2022\tBe sure athletes and parents are educated of the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>You can visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.athletictrainers.org\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.athletictrainers.org<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TYLER \u2013 Robert E.
