Jay Brooks stepped into the role Tuesday morning, after being sworn into office by County Judge Joel Baker in the Smith County Commissioners Court.  Brooks, 38, previously served as a Lindale police officer and is a former assistant fire marshal for the county. He was selected for the post after 15-year Fire Marshal Jim Seaton passed away in April.  &#8220;There is a legacy in this office that I am so lucky to get to carry forward,\u201d Brooks said following the ceremony.  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>Brooks is a 13-year veteran of firefighting and has six years of certified fire investigator experience. Brooks served on a volunteer basis with the Smith County Fire Marshal\u2019s office from 2008 to 2013. He also holds multiple certifications as a fire\/arson investigator, inspector, peace officer, and private investigator and has logged more than 1,000 hours of fire, rescue, and EMT-B training in addition to his investigative training.  \u201cThis isn&#8217;t just a career to me,\u201d said Brooks. \u201cThis is a calling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duties of the Smith County Fire Marshal&#8217;s Office include enforcing all state and county regulations related to fire or explosions; inspecting structures for fire hazards; investigating the cause, origin, and circumstances of each fire that occurs within the county that destroys or damages property; coordinating various county firefighting units; and executing a workable emergency management plan for emergency services, shelter, and food for the citizens of Smith County in the event of a disaster. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TYLER &#8212; Smith County officially has a new fire marshal.
