The Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Tuesday identified the female inmate who died as Ellaree Mathews, 53. She was serving less than a year for a conviction out of Angelina County. Mathews was pronounced dead at the scene late Monday morning near Cameron. The Department of Public Safety says the wreck involved a van hauling four female inmates from the Crain Unit in Gatesville to a substance abuse treatment facility in Beaumont. Officials say one inmate and one transport worker were treated and released.
