Mike and Patrice Carmichael got the good news at the agency’s annual meeting at Rick’s on the Square. Since relocating to Tyler in 1998, the Carmichaels have been involved in four historic home projects. Those are the 1932 Tudor style Shirley Simons house at Lindsey and Broadway; the 1946 Mediterranean revival house at College and Third, across from Bergfeld Park; the 1932 Spanish colonial revival at College and Mockingbird; and a 1939 neoclassical revival on Old Bullard Road. Along with that, the Carmichaels placed properties in the Donnybrook Duplex Residential Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Carmichaels were also honored for additional contributions. They’ve offered their homes twice on the Historic Tyler Tour of Homes. Mrs. Carmichael has created and donated artist sketches of tour homes as gifts for the homeowners. Mr. Carmichael has served as president of Historic Tyler, has put in two terms on its board of directors, has served on the city’s Historical Preservation Board, has been involved in the initiative to preserve Tyler’s brick streets, and is currently on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. When Mr. Carmichael told the audience at the meeting, “We don’t deserve this,” meeting attendees let him know quickly that they considered the honor very well-deserved.

The meeting also served as a fundraiser for the agency, with a substantial amount of money coming in through live and silent auctions, a wine pull, and a golden ticket drawing. Former Sheriff J.B. Smith entertained the audience with his well-honed auctioneer skills during the live auction. Along with that, a new slate of leaders was approved for Historic Tyler; Lucinda Kittrell will serve as board president for the coming year. Speakers urged everyone to help Historic Tyler continue its mission: “to promote the preservation and protection of historic structures and sites through education, involvement, and public and private investment.” You can go to http://www.historictyler.org to learn more and find out how you can be involved.

TYLER — A Tyler couple was honored Saturday night with Historic Tyler’s 2013 Preservation Award.
