KETK reports that in addition to the deceased toddler, Trenton Mathis, two other children were also in custody of Mathis’s great-grandparents in Cherokee County. CPS obtained custody of the children in December 2012, because of a case that originated in Harris County.

The children were originally removed from the home of their parents in Houston upon allegations of physical neglect and abuse. As a result, the children were placed with their great-grandparents. CPS did a home study on the great-grandparents on February 12, 2013. Following the study, CPS said it did not recommend the children stay with the great-grandparents due to concerns about living conditions and the ability for them to care for three young children ages five, two, and nine months. At the court hearing, however, the judge ordered that the children stay with the great-grandparents anyway.

CPS tells KETK that judges will occasionally go against CPS recommendations in order to keep children in family care. The attorneys in the case also agreed with the judge at the time. The two remaining siblings that were in the great-grandparents’ care have now been removed from the home and placed in a CPS foster home.

There is another 23-month-old sibling in Houston who was not originally placed with the great-grandparents because the child was considered “unable to thrive” after the initial removal from the parents due to health concerns. Because that child needed additional rehabilitation, CPS decided that the great-grandparents would not be able to care for him and placed him in a Houston area foster home. Officials say Trenton accidentally shot himself Wednesday afternoon and died after being flown to an area hospital. The investigation of Trenton’s case continues.

CHEROKEE COUNTY — Child Protective Services tried to keep a 2-year-old Cherokee County boy, who died after accidently shooting himself in the face, out of his great-grandparents’ home.
