Kerry Max Cook was twice sentenced to death for the killing of Linda Jo Edwards, 21. Courts overturned both convictions, and Cook would plead no contest in 1999 in exchange for a sentence of time served. Cook now wants new DNA testing that could definitively prove his innocence. Smith County authorities say they destroyed Edwards\u2019 underwear and other evidence after his no-contest plea, but other evidence remains. But Cook\u2019s attorneys on Tuesday asked for a hearing to determine why some was destroyed and whether other evidence is missing.
