In recent reports, suspects impersonated federal and local law enforcement officers by using spoofed phone numbers to conceal their identities. Victims were threatened with arrest unless they sent money for \u201cbonds,\u201d fines, or fees\u2014often via cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) ATMs. The scammers might already have personal information, including your date of birth and Social Security number, which may have been obtained through a data breach.<\/p>\n

Other scams involve callers pretending to be from banks or credit card companies, asking for personal or account information, and directing victims to transfer money to \u201csecure accounts.\u201d Scammers also request that victims download software so they can access victims\u2019 phones or computers remotely.<\/p>\n

Remember: No law enforcement agency will ever request payment or a bond over the phone. Never buy gift cards or use crypto ATMs at someone\u2019s direction.
