CHICAGO (AP) – Four-time MVP A\u2019ja Wilson was selected first in the WNBA All-Star draft for the exhibition game that will be played on July 25 in Chicago.<\/p>\n
Acting as honorary general managers, WNBA greats Cynthia Cooper and Teresa Weatherspoon each drafted All-Star teams Wednesday from players that previously were either voted as starters by fans, media and fellow players or chosen as reserves by the league\u2019s coaches.<\/p>\n
Previously, the top two fan vote-getters would serve as captains and draft their own teams. This year that would have been Dallas\u2019 Paige Bueckers and Indiana\u2019s Caitlin Clark. Instead, they were each assigned to a team, with Bueckers headlining Cooper\u2019s team and Clark atop Weatherspoon\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n
Joining Bueckers in the starting lineup were New York\u2019s Breanna Stewart, Indiana\u2019s Kelsey Mitchell, Minnesota\u2019s Natasha Howard and Golden State\u2019s Gabby Williams. Weatherspoon picked Las Vegas\u2019 Wilson, Minnesota\u2019s Olivia Miles, Indiana\u2019s Aliyah Boston and Dallas\u2019 Jessica Shepard.<\/p>\n
Cooper had the first pick of the reserves and chose Atlanta\u2019s Angel Reese. She\u2019ll play against her two Dream teammates Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, who were chosen by Weatherspoon.<\/p>\n
Cooper also drafted Toronto\u2019s Marina Mabrey, Seattle\u2019s Dominique Malonga, Los Angeles\u2019 Kelsey Plum, Las Vegas\u2019 Jackie Young and Washington\u2019s Sonia Citron as reserves. Weatherspoon also took New York\u2019s Jonquel Jones, Minnesota\u2019s Courtney Williams, Washington\u2019s Kiki Iriafen and Los Angeles\u2019 Nneka Ogwumike. Ogwumike, an 11-time All-Star, was chosen with the final pick of the draft.<\/p>\n
Las Vegas\u2019 Becky Hammon will coach Cooper\u2019s team and Minnesota\u2019s Cheryl Reeve will be in charge of Weatherspoon\u2019s squad. Las Vegas and Minnesota had identical records through July 10, but the Aces had a tiebreaker with their victory over the Lynx. That put Hammon in charge of Bueckers\u2019 squad because she was the leading vote-getter.<\/p>\n
