{"id":1521556,"date":"2026-07-06T15:19:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T20:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ktbb.com\/post\/?p=1521556"},"modified":"2026-07-06T16:31:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T21:31:56","slug":"supreme-court-wont-block-texas-from-enforcing-a-law-requiring-age-verification-for-app-downloads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ktbb.com\/post\/?p=1521556","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court won\u2019t block Texas from enforcing a law requiring age verification for app downloads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to block Texas from enforcing a state law that requires apps stores to verify users\u2019 ages and obtain parental consent for minors seeking to download apps or make in-app purchases on mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito, in a pair of one-sentence orders, denied petitions by plaintiffs who claim that the Texas App Store Accountability Act violates users\u2019 constitutional rights to free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a three-judge panel from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law can take effect. The panel suspended a district court\u2019s ruling last December that the law is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs suing to block the law include the Computer &#038; Communications Industry Association and Students Engaged in Advancing Texas. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is a defendant in both cases.<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers argued that the law impermissibly seeks to limit access to content protected by the First Amendment, including news and educational material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEquity and the public interest support relief because protecting First Amendment rights \u2014 and parents\u2019 rights to supervise their children as they see fit, not as the government tells them they should \u2014 is always in the public interest,\u201d wrote attorneys for Students Engaged in Advancing Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys from Paxton\u2019s office argued that the law protects children from \u201cdangerous modern products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA child with access to an app store and a mobile device (such as a tablet or smartphone) can potentially download any number of software applications, potentially agreeing to invasions of the child\u2019s privacy and sale of the child\u2019s data and be exposed to any conceivable content without parental consent or even parental knowledge,\u201d they wrote. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to block Texas from enforcing a state law that requires apps stores to verify users\u2019 ages and obtain parental consent for minors seeking to download apps or make in-app purchases on mobile phones.
