Greg Abbott as decisions on transgender and birthright citizenship issues were handed down.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the rulings made by the Supreme Court that caught the attention of East Texans included the decision to uphold state laws preventing transgender women from playing on school athletic teams and striking down President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the U.S. illegally or temporarily are not American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>In a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that states may continue to uphold bans on transgender girls from competing on girls and women\u2019s school sports teams, after finding that banning transgender women from school athletics does not violate Title IX, according to a report from The Hill.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStates may maintain women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports for biological females to address safety and competitive fairness concerns,\u201d Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote. \u201cThe Constitution and Title IX do not require an overhaul of women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports throughout America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abbott and several East Texas politicians praised the Supreme Court\u2019s decision, claiming the ruling preserves the integrity of athletics while also protecting athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuge win at the Supreme Court for girls\u2019 sports,\u201d Abbott said. \u201cIn Texas, we\u2019ve been clear: no boys in girls\u2019 sports. This is a win for women, for truth and for the common sense our nation was founded on.\u201d<br \/>\nSupreme Court upholds transgender athlete bans in schools<\/p>\n<p>East Texas State Representative Cole Hefner, R-Mount Pleasant, also praised the ruling, emphasizing that the decision is a \u201cwin for Texas and a win for fairness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas took action to protect girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports, and today\u2019s Supreme Court ruling ensures those protections remain on solid constitutional ground,\u201d Hefner said. \u201cOur daughters deserve the opportunity to compete on a level playing field, and we\u2019ll keep fighting to protect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Texas State Sen. Bryan Hughes commended the ruling, stating the decision protects all female athletes and their privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court just affirmed what Texas law has already made clear: boys do not belong in girls\u2019 sports or their private spaces,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cThis is a victory for women all across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court\u2019s rejects Trump\u2019s limits on birthright citizenship<\/p>\n<p>While the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to keep transgender women out of school athletics was met with praise from local politicians and Abbott, the decision to uphold birthright citizenship received a negative response.<\/p>\n<p>By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court struck down an executive order from Trump that would have declared children born to people who are in the U.S. illegally or temporarily are not American citizens, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCitizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights\u2014to freely participate in our political community,\u201d Chief Justice John Roberts said. \u201cThe Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to \u2018every free-born person in this land.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TYLER \u2014 The U.S. Supreme Court made several monumental rulings on Tuesday, inciting mixed reactions from East Texas politicians and Gov.
