{"id":1518619,"date":"2026-06-26T10:59:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T15:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ktbb.com\/post\/?p=1518619"},"modified":"2026-06-26T10:59:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T15:59:36","slug":"marina-mabrey-matches-wnba-scoring-record-with-53-points-to-help-toronto-rout-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ktbb.com\/post\/?p=1518619","title":{"rendered":"Marina Mabrey matches WNBA scoring record with 53 points to help Toronto rout Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Marina Mabrey matched the WNBA scoring record with 53 points to help the Toronto Tempo rout the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Mabrey tied the mark set by Liz Cambage for Dallas against New York on July 17, 2018, and matched by A\u2019ja Wilson for Las Vegas at Atlanta on Aug. 22, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Mabrey said she was unaware of the scoring record until sister Michaela Mabrey, sitting on the sideline, told her she was three points away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no stat board in our gym,\u201d Mabrey said. \u201cAfter you get into a state like that, it\u2019s kind of hard to know what you\u2019re really doing, but my teammates made it known, so I knew I was doing something good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she checked out with a minute remaining, fans briefly booed before erupting into cheers in acknowledgement of her big night. The clock ticked down to zero with chants of \u201cWe Want Mabrey! We Want Mabrey!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to come out,\u201d Brondello said. \u201cI said \u2019No, no you\u2019ve got to stay in for this record.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mabrey did as the coach said, firing up two more 3-pointers, which both missed. Then, it was time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was done. She goes, \u2018I\u2019m out,\u2019\u201d Brondello said.<\/p>\n<p>Mabrey was 17 of 28 from the field, tied the WNBA record for 3-pointers with nine in 18 attempts, and made 10 of 12 free throws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think tonight was just my night from the 3-point line \u2014 and from honestly everywhere,\u201d Mabrey laughed. \u201cAnd then the fans, to end up chanting MVP, I don\u2019t know that I ever imagined that. But it was really a good feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old former Notre Dame star shattered the expansion team\u2019s previous high of 38 points done twice by Brittney Sykes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been doing this for quite some time,\u201d Toronto coach Sandy Brondello said. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen that. (Not even from WNBA legend) Diana Taurasi, and she could shoot it really well. I mean, to witness that was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mabrey also had six rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Allemand added 13 points and 14 assists for Toronto in the highest-score game in the team\u2019s short history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulie literally throws the ball right to my pocket, it\u2019s actually wild,\u201d Mabrey said.<\/p>\n<p>Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby led the Sparks with 21 points apiece.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto climbed back to .500 at 9-9, and Los Angeles fell to 8-9.<\/p>\n<p>The Tempo opened a nine-game homestand that includes two games at Montreal\u2019s Bell Centre.<br \/>\nUp next<\/p>\n<p>Sparks: At Indiana on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Tempo: Host Phoenix on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Marina Mabrey matched the WNBA scoring record with 53 points to help the Toronto Tempo rout the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on Thursday night.
